This was a nice one, Carl. Proof that summer's really here. Remember we walked about the economics of bean rolling last year ... I still think that would be the job for an old man like me, not too complicated and very little to go wrong. The engineer who designed that folding/unfolding system on the roller deserves a real tip of the hat ... uncomplicated and very little to go wrong. Hmm, repeating myself ... a definite sign of old age, LoL... Stay happy and stay well.

Real-Time Kinematic is just a fancy term for a gps system that not only uses satellites, but also uses at least one base station at a known location to constantly correct the small errors in tour tractor’s gps location so that you can have pinpoint accuracy no matter how long it’s been since you’ve used that tractor in that field. We use it mostly for shutting off the planter as it goes through waterways that we have previously mapped out. Also great for auto steering along fences that were previously recorded.

We are firming the soil over the soybeans to make sure that any air pockets are eliminated. Also, it pushes small rocks back down flush with the surface of the soil so that we don't injure the cutterbar on the bean head during harvest. Lastly, by smoothing out the surface of the ground we can cut down just a little lower on the bean plants in the fall and capture one or two more pods per plant.

Not being a farmer, I need a wee bit more info on what it means to "roll in beans." What is it, what is the mechanism, and are the seeds already planted? Are you pushing them into the soil or just packing the soil onto them?

Yes sorry I should have explained better! The beans are already planted and this roller is just firming the soils down and making sure there are no air pockets left in the furrow and pushing down any little rocks that might be sticking up. It also levels the little humps out so that the combine can cut the beans all the way down to the bottom of the plant. I may have explained it a little better last year. I really don’t actually know how heavy the rollers are. They don’t change the seed depth, just flattening out the ground and eliminating any potential air pockets underneath as well as pushing down any rocks.

have you ever tried rolling your beans at V1 stage? Some studies suggest you increases yields by stressing the plant to prioritize making beans instead of leaves.

We have never tried that. It seems we are always busy with other field operations at that point .

Newer drones have the ability to follow a subject. Like a person walking, skiing or in this case a tractor. I suspect he gets the drone in the air targets tractor to follow then does a few rows and uses the some of the better shots.

Michael is correct. My drone has auto track which I use a lot. Sometimes I’ll do some manual maneuvers if I’m in a big wide open spot with nothing else to worry about.
