I'm not sure which is more stunning; that the Dodgers have nearly $1billion in deferred payroll or that the total, even without Ohtani's $680 million, is more than the rest of MLB, combined. No matter: Go Dodgers!

Enjoy listening to Jeff’s and Matt’s opinions. Wish Jeff or someone on their team actually read the CBA or talked to someone who is more knowledgeable regarding how deferral payments worked. Dodgers need to put in present day value of the contract in an escrow account 2 years (on July 1st) after they earned the deferred payment. Also it doesn’t have to be liquid (ie 10 year treasury bond will work in Ohtani’s case or something agree with MLB and the player). Only reason I’m commenting is because this isn’t the first time I see this happening on this channel. Overall enjoy the content and work this channel produces. Keep up the good work.

I think the two year part was accurately explained, but you’re right that “liquid” wasn’t the perfect word choice. I was trying to keep things simple, but ended up doing so at the expense of being precise.

@@jeffspiegelMaybe I’m wrong, but from what I’ve read and heard, the amount that is put in is the present day value of the deferred amount every year. For example, Ohtani’s contract is worth about $46MMAAV in present day value. So the amount that needs to be in the account would not be the full $68MM deferred amount, rather closer to $44MM. I understand the nuance of CBA probably not important to talk about. Appreciate making it simpler terms. More echoing Matt’s perspective of misinformation spreads like wildfire. If I am wrong and you are right about Dodgers putting $68MM every year, my apologies. That was my understanding of the CBA and appreciate you bring it to light. Keep up the good work.

@@ShotaMotegifor sure. And you’re right about the amount due into escrow - NPV, not $68m so good catch.

Well now I’m worried about how Tommy Edman’s contract will age. The comps are there. In 2016 CT3 was the co-NLCS MVP. Both have a lot of defensive flexibility. CT3 historically has a bit more power, Edman has better bat to ball skills. CT3 has made an All-Star team, Edman has won a gold glove. I think this Dodger team will be amazing the next few years and then we could start to see some down years as these players age and players are still under contract.

Not only are the Dodgers operating within the CBA when using deferrals, (most importantly) the Players' Association LOVES it, because it then gives the Dodgers (and other teams) to go spend more today/right now.

There was rumor that Dodgers would do 3 yr, $50 million deal for Tyler O'Neill...and Paul Sewald mentioned sort of wanting to be on Dodgers, so he would be a nice pickup to offset Daniel Hudson

Tyler O'neill's not the guy. Look at his lifetime avg. Yeah he hits dingers but, not enough especially with his avg

I never liked the Chris Taylor contract because he is not a starter. At that time i was thinking 2 years plus 1 at team option.
