Does Captain Benefit a Unit in Battle in OG Rome: Total War?

I don't know what is causing the Captains unit to fight worse outside of RNG really having it out for them because by all accounts having a sword armed captain with multiple hit points should make the unit fight better. One thing I do know however is that even in a regular unit having a captain just around your other units helps them to fight on much harder. Both his presence and use of the horn makes units fight on much longer than they would on their own and I have seen it happen in my own tests to see how long they can last.

The overall result seemed to be a wash. I would say that in that last test, having the captain must have made a positive material impact on an unlucky fight, because we saw him take down somewhere between a half dozen to a dozen men by himself. We could speculate that the extra man is somehow causing the unit to fight less aggressively/with less cohesion, but that doesn't seem to wash given that the captain fights alongside the standard bearer, and in the same vertical rank as him.

While RNG is the biggest determining factor, I did note one interesting observation. Whether the unit won or lost, the left side of the unit where the captain was did better in all three fights than the right side of the unit where the captain was not. So, while he did not make the unit better as a whole, his fighting skills did appear to make a slight difference in the combat.

A very interesting notion. Does the unit try to "protect" the captain there thus leading to a vulnerability on the other flank which gets exploited? Really don't know :) Thanks for the comment.

Could be that the average location of the unit is offset by the captain which leads to troops being slightly dragged away from the right side a little thus making it weaker.

My thinking was more along the lines that the unit was going to lose anyway due to RNG, but because the captain was present and is a slightly better solider than the other soldiers in the unit, he was able to swing the fight on the side just not the entire fight.

Surprisingly it seems that the captain makes it worse, anyway im new here in the channel, i love it, can you do gladiator fight? which gladiator unit is the best? they have same stats but who knows, idk if you already did it sorry. Also what about custom units? i made some original units, it would be cool to see them fighting

@qualityoldgames7721 thank you, i enjoyed the video so much Custom units are basically some units that i have made by modding the original ones, creating new ones by scratch or unlocking some hidden ones that there are in the game's file (carthage scutarii and archers for example)

My guesses are that its either bad rng, after all with 240 troops the captain is less than a 1% improvement and if one side gets the upper hand in numbers then they aren’t gonna rout even if their general is elsewhere. If the general actually is making things worse though then it might be due to something like the unit trying to keep the formation together when the general gets pushed away from everyone else, resulting in some troops trying to reorganize mid combat which gets them slashed.

Maybe try the experiment again with smaller unit cards, and maybe also some weaker units where the captain can stand out more. Priests would probably be the best one for this with their minuscule numbers and stats.

Not really unjustified - if the captain dies, it's an immediate morale hit; kind of like shock hits, causing things to immediately rout.

Hm, interesting RNG. By the way, do you by any chance know, what stats does the captain/general himself has? It is obvious that he has multiple hitpoints, but what are his other stats, like attack/defence? And are they constant, or different from unit to unit?

В файлах игры прописаны базовые характеристики капитанов и полководцев,по умолчанию капитан имеет 5 хп,полководец 8 хп,капитан может стать жирнее если сядет на слона,полководец через прокачку.Атака и броня зависят от отряда,в котором капитан/полководец находятся,навык защиты - 0,щит соответсвенно тоже 0

I have understood general is the one with bodyguard whereas with basic unit, it is captain. That is the reason. :) Thanks for the comment.

Captain is when your general is not a family member.
