I’m 63, have been making bone broth and taking collagen for at least 4 years, consistently. My hair is darker, much coarser, and fuller. My nails are hard as rock. Skin wise, I look pretty good for my age, and think that hydration, sleep and aerobic exercise help too. Also, I have zero joint pain and I’m an open water swimmer. So at my age, that says something!

@@k1nkstar448 you are very welcome! To be honest, my real ambition is to preserve my bone integrity. No one has studied if collagen helps maintain bones, but for the aging population, this is the top priority. I walk on average 2.6 miles daily (as per my ❤️ app) and my last bone density test showed a slight decrease in numbers but generally that I have maintained things over the last 5 years. So maybe collagen did help, but walking is the #1 best maintenance program. Happy Valentine’s Day! 💐💕💐💕

0:00: 🔬 Dr. Amir Karem discusses the topic of collagen supplements and its benefits and risks. 4:05: 🔑 Collagen plays a crucial role in various parts of our body and its production diminishes with age, leading to skin aging and other issues. 7:24: ✨ Collagen is a protein made up of amino acids, including glycine and proline, and requires Vitamin C, zinc, and copper for production. When ingested, collagen is broken down into individual amino acids that are used to build proteins in the body. 12:32: ✅ Collagen supplements can enhance collagen production, but getting the necessary amino acids and vitamins through diet is equally effective. 14:33: 💡 To stimulate collagen production in the skin, it is important to use topical active ingredients like retinoids and vitamin C, as well as undergo external injury procedures like chemical peels or laser treatments. Consistency is key in using these agents, and supplementing with collagen-building components in the diet can also be beneficial. 17:26: 🔬 Collagen supplements may have some benefits for skin hydration, fine lines and wrinkles, joint pain, and hair and nail growth, but more research is needed. 20:40: 🧪 Using collagen supplements can have benefits for skin, nails, joints, and hair, but it is important to choose a reputable brand and use as directed. 23:58: 💡 Understanding collagen and its role in skincare. I use a hydrolyzed bovine collagen powder by 'Great Lakes Wellness'. I put in 12 grams of powder, 2 scoops, into 3-4 ounces of orange juice, using a whisk- It may take 30 seconds or so- no big deal. One can purchase a frother too, for $ 7.00 - $12.00, but I like my mini whisk. There may be some undissolved particles, but I feel it goes down well. I started with 3.5 scoops and now use what I mentioned, sometimes a little extra, every other day before eating my dinner. ( I also intermittent fast - eat 1 meal a day and anything extra within 4 hours). I just turned 53 & I noticed a change at age 48-50 in my skin. Beginning premenopausal stage... I only use SPF when the sun is shining and a moisturizer, usually makeup free, and sunglasses, even when the sun isn't out. I wash my face with a tea tree face soap nightly (Trader Joe's), and then use the same moisturizer, CeraVe, or thick Nivea cream, oils sometimes, and use that on my face down to my dècolletė and then just use cold water in the morning. I have noticed that my skin has become nice and taut. It has also helped my joints, however, every other day when I'm not using the collagen powder, I take one tablespoon of omega 3 fish oil, also right before eating. I dread these days. That's my routine but I am going to start using microneedling for my nasolabial folds to see if that will make a difference, for how I feel that I would like changes, tretnoin, and exercising, depending on how I feel- long story. I would like to have toned arms & I have to do something to tone my legs around my knees. I'm 5'8" and 67 kg. I don't smoke, drink occasionally, but I'm a sun worshiper in the summer months. ( sunscreen throughout the day, a large beach umbrella, and a small one, just for my upper body depending on how much sun I'd like or how hot it is. * That's it ladies. TMI - sorry, but I believe in women supporting women. Perhaps something will help someone, maybe not. I prefer more information in the comments section, rather than not enough details. Have a nice week ahead and enjoy the changes that you see with collagen powder plus other things! One more thing - we shouldn't be so hard on how we age. So many men start growing facial hairas they age and so much is hidden. Being empathetic, truly, and a good person is so much more important. Support other women i.e., giving a true compliment; telling her that the tag of the back of the shirt needs to be tucked in, just a simple hello, or smile can make someone's day nicer, including yours. 😉

Excellent video! Amino acids are so important for our health. My grandmother had no wrinkles, she always enjoyed bone broth soup. Although some people may find it a little gross, she had chicken feet bone broth, in Mexico it was and still is a budget soup to make. I tried it myself, but I could never eat the feet, I only drank the soup. I also would make fish gelatin out of the scales of the fish when I was living in Mexico. We only do kosher/halal bone broths and gelatins because grandma's know best. My great grandfather had not one wrinkle in his face, he died in his 90's and he had a full set of hair, not to mention also no joint problems either. Shalom.

I am Eurasian and have chicken feet/lamb/beef homemade bone broth regularly. Its best with Black Silky chicken as it has tons of extrs nutrients compared to normal chicken. Chicken is Type II collagen & beef is Type I & III. After cooking for 3+ hours the bones get soft so a spoon them out and cut them finely to get to the marrow inside and put it back in. You can also add Chinese herbal broth sachets which has EXTREME health benefits and gives an exotic taste. Its basically Chinese Medicine.

I’m an internist and I specialized. What we have to learn on the whole, as practicing physicians and patients, people of society, that everything that will be successful required all the ingredients and the right process to put it together. There has rarely ever been “the one thing” that made that something a success. Health emerges from this orchestration. In general, our health and social systems have all been functioning in divisions and separate systems. One other thing I would add…healthy vascular health would likely contribute to improved collagen production and deposition in desired areas, since micro vascular structures are the most sensitive to the states of blood flow.

I would highly recommend that if you take collagen powders (including Vital Proteins) that you also supplement with Lysine. Otherwise you might put yourself at risk of shingles. The arginine level needs to be less than the lysine level. There is a lot of research on this which I discovered the first time I got shingles. The second time I was coming down with shingles, as I was in the pharmacy to pick up a prescription for shingles, I saw the vital Proteins can and looked at the ingredients and saw the lysine/arginine ratio and knew exactly why I was coming down with shingles again. I picked up a bottle of lysine and took that and my shingles stopped within a day. I never took the prescription. Anyway, I think the lysine connection was discovered because many bodybuilders were getting shingles and they also take a lot of protein supplements.

I also believe that my mild to moderate instances of joint pain have been reduced in the time I’ve used it. Obviously 100% anecdotal, but I’ve tried to be accurate and objective since that %?!# isn’t cheap.

Presently, I take a collagen supplement with hyaluronic acid, and it has been an amazing find. I am so glad you did this video. I had been hoping someone would address this issue and whether there was any benefit to taking a collagen supplement or not. I researched for about a year before I decided to rake the plunge. I was truly hoping to find a vegan supplement, but everything I read, didn’t seem to support those supplements like they do the bovine-based collagen. I am using the live conscious brand which uses 19 naturally occurring amino acids, as well as Types I and III hydrolyzed collagen. I questioned myself, whether I would continue taking it after this supply runs out, but after seeing your video, I think I will continue with it! It can’t hurt!

There is no vegan collagen. Unless you find a very sophisticated product that is somehow skirting the line between the plant and animal kingdoms. Products that claim to be vegan collagen are usually made up of ingredients that supposedly pump up your body's own collagen production: glycine, vitamin c, carotenes, silica, biotin, etc.

My nails had never been stronger in my life! For months 3 and 4 I switched to Vital Proteins powder collagen peptides and this one I really had great results with, I'm guessing because of the consistency and the fact that it had all 5 types of collagen in that brand. By month 3 my hair began to grow thicker and longer. My skin looked really good, it had a glow... which at 40 was really exciting! ;) By month 4 the coolest thing was my joints didn't crack every time I walked up the stairs and after over a decade I could kneel again without wanting to cry! It was amazing! I can't stress enough that I believe consistency is the key, and I was also walking 5 times a week, nothing crazy just 45 minute walks outside. And I had also started taking prenatal vitamins, magnesium and B12. I was trying to eat relatively well but mainly in moderation, no dieting. I think the combination of all of the above really helped everything work to the best of it's ability. When I was a butcher the Fat &Bone man came every week and took the fat and bones. They went off for processing into endless products, jelly (jello) food ingredients, pet food ,cosmetics all sorts of stuff. This latest fashion for collagen supplements must be a fantastic profit machine for the meat industry, because its a new use for a dirt cheap by-product of the meat industry. Once it’s been digested, broken down by acid and enzymes it just gets used around the body as required, like any other protein. The fibroblasts dont stop making collagen because the raw amino acids aren’t available, they stop due to genetic programming. You can give them all the amino acids you like, even inject bio-available ones directly into the skin, unless the DNA instructs the cells to construct collagen, they won’t do it.
@marshawalker52732 ай бұрын
So u say collagen supplements don't help after a certain age. I'm 77
@thpxs05542 ай бұрын
@@marshawalker5273 Hi, i have a friend who’s a very well qualified cell biologist, he told me that anything you eat is totally broken down into its various amino acids, and then reassembled in to proteins as required and where required by incredibly complex chemical interactions. Just eating collagen doesn’t mean it will remain as collagen and be transported to the connective tissue and re-assimilated there. as we age these repair processes slow down and we see the results in the mirror and feel our joints getting stiff, If you are deficient in some nutrients then the collagen supplement may have useful amino acids that the body can’t make from other food and in that case the supplements are useful but don’t go directly to the skin. If you feel better taking it then carry on, my wife drinks it and says she feels a benefit.

Glad you did this one. Researching the brand's and types is crucial with some having fillers and things that stress kidneys. We found a Senzu bovine version that's made a nice difference. I use a retinol cleanser, a retinol cream for evening. I use a little argan oil on my face in the morning while treating my hair. Eating right does make a difference. Loss of estrogen doesn't help the acceleration either. The bovine supplement with some vitamin C in the morning is helping skin, hair, nails and my joints. Making the right choices isn't easy with all the fades available. It's easy to can your own bone stock or freeze in ice cube trays to transfer into freezer bags. Year's ago we used to buy gelatin packs. It's still an option if you can find. Would you provide a video on different laser options? Some out there are stacking products and aggressive. Catch phrases are used with problems resulting. Thanks for sharing

Dr. Kamir, I’ve been watching and taking your advises for a few weeks, and they are all great. But for this topic, I have to disagree with you. When I became 65, all the sudden I lost skin elasticity, nails became brittle and hair got thinner. With desperation, I started to take inexpensive collagen powder every morning and night (I use both Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides and Orgain Collagen Peptides). I also hit my face with my fingers every night. And to my pleasant surprise, within 6 months, my nail grow stronger, hair gets thicker and my skin restored elasticity. With Retinol from Bare Mineral, Vitamin C serum from Olay and hyaluronic acid from Roc, line are gone, cheeks are more lifted and people tells me that they believe I am in 30s. SO COLLAGEN SUPPLIMENTS WORKS LIKE A MIRACLE!!! I highly recommend everyone in my age to take it daily. BTW, my avatar is how I look now. 😉

Thank you Doc. The best explanation ever. Now I know a lot about collagen, I always wondered about it. Thanks again Doc for breaking it down so thoroughly.

I've been taking marine collagen and gelatin religiously for 9 months. No changes to my hair or skin. Only thing I noticed is a deep cut on my finger heald up REALLY fast, but left a very noticeable scar. I never had scars before.

I've also heard that combining Turmeric supplements with the Vit. C & Collagen can be beneficial for joints and skin. 🤷I've been trying it, but too soon to tell

If you take turmeric add pepper to help absorb the Tumeric.
