I honestly didn't mind the new explanation for the outbreak. It's even wackier now with SOLA and it kinda fits with the overall vibe of the game. Dead island and Riptide were a lot more serious and straightforward despite the wacky setting for the outbreak. Dead island 2 made the choice to go all in on the wackyness and I really like it. It doesn't take itself too seriously like a lot of zombie game do. The setting and ambiance are IMO the core of the franchise and they nailed it for 2.

If I remember correctly, all those who are immune are Numen, including Sam B, but they have to go through a sort of rebirth to retain their humanity, if they fail they succumb to the Autophage and turn into Zombies.

One thing I don't get is how Pathogen HK triggers physical mutations to a such a radical degree you'd only expect from the Autophage. If the Autophage is a radical part of the human life cycle/an extinction event, it'd make sense for them to turn into grotesque abominations, but not so much for a disease made up of Kuru, rabies, and HIV.

From what I've glanced because I haven't actually played the game... kuru was like adding nitro to a slow running engine that without would eventually break down to become the "autophage," so kuru just causes the "timer" to go straight to zero and activates what was apparently already there laying in wait.

Pathogen HK/HK1 were just early trigger mechanisms for the autophage itself. As for the origins of the Banoi strain of HK, it’s a bit shrouded in mystery. Most accounts state it began with Yerema, the native girl that was a carrier. However, Escape Dead Island has yet another zombie-creating pathogen called HKEA, which hasn’t been confirmed to be either Pathogen HK or something entirely different.

I think Dead Island 2 missed a great opportunity in somehow featuring "Catalina Island" 26 miles off the coast of Los Angeles, CA as part of the setting for the game or maybe via a DLC..? Anyways, 1.) there's a military base on the island 2.) some cool conspiracies about the island itself, and 3.) the island features lots of great history. The game could've tied the whole project together and using Catalina Island in some capacity would've made the "Island" part of the title make a bit more sense. Lol. What do y'all think? Would've been cool, huh? Catalina absolutely stunning... the setting would've been great for this game. PS. I live in LA and always thought that Catalina Island would be the first place I'd escape to if zombies ever turned out to be a RL threat of some sort and overrun the population in LA.

The fact dead island 2 wasn't on an island is why I drew the line, I was VERY loyal to the game for a while, not even playing dying light until I saw Embear playing it n finally made the switch. And after all this time with dead island 2 being scrapped and redone n postponed.... meh. The whole "logic" behind the "virus" or whatever, not important. The biggest part of the game was it being on this mysterious island n there being a lot of spooky stuff in what was supposed to be a huge vacation resort. Now, if they made a dead island 3, not quite keeping with the "the story" but more so just making a sort of "brand new" story elsewhere and as if to "redo" or remaster the first one, I'd really like to see the outbreak happen in real time n play during it, so we can see at any given time exactly why things are the way they are, if theres an overturned endlessly burning car somewhere I want to be able to see the crash happen, some form of in game cinematic clock where a WHOLE BUNCH of different events happen in multiple places simultaneously and that you can even possibly hear those events happening while you're over somewhere else witnessing another..... Of course it would be fairly easy, if you're not at any given place to witness something then the system wouldn't really have to play out those events in whatever loading cell but the sound from it and the aftermath could still be placed there, technical stuff. Or better yet each time, you could run through to specific places to witness some limited time things or even acquire some limited item or resource, like say one playthrough you run through the outbreak into some big store of some sort and there's a claw machine that gets destroyed and could pick up various stuffed animal type things, but only within a certain frame of time because all of it would soon be charred by another real time event where stuff gets set on fire and the things become unobtainable, or at least not in their original form.... details as small as that. Or say going to a hospital and witnessing whatever horrors would likely be going on in there so that when you return later or if you play through again would know exactly why the place looks like it does, or quite possibly being able to prevent certain things from happening to begin with..... O_o And again with the whole fixed terrain that these games tend to have, it'd be nice to actually be there so that you KNOW exactly how things got to be like that and would make things that much more special than just being a static dystopian art piece, feeling involved in how the landscape changes overtime, that's a big part of what makes these games special :D

It is like telling a person, that when they are not happy how crappy company x did not fix their car (or build the car to begin with) to do it better. The technology is there, the story telling abilities, too. After all there are great games, and great Zombie movies. So it should be possible to create a great Zombie game... if they would do it to create something great, and not just a quick cash grap. This is of course the problem with our economic system, but just saying "show if you could do better" When we know we do not get what would be easily possible if companies would create games for their own sake is just a really bad take.

Honestly, the lore they created in dead island 2 needs to be studied. Truly incredible, with slight ambiguity, theres just enough information to read between the lines. The lore is deep and complex, genuinely Haus made me spiral ive never experienced anything like that in a video game. The dlc gave so much insight that has been applicable in real life. 10/10
