Dr. Norton (PhD) your knowledge in all things nutrition and it's effect on human physiology is second to none. I agree with you 1000%. Which is exactly why I tell people when it comes to nutrition CALORIES is "King" and protein is "Queen". But I have 1 question. I thought intermittent fasting (under 24hrs raised one's metabolism). Or is that a fallacy well???

Yes I am curious about that as well. They seem to agree on many things but hold very different opinions on the effect of caloric restriction on metabolic rate. But they do agree on at least one major thing. A good diet for a given is the one it can adhere to. Greg shares the one that works for him and on the whole I think it fits in with what Layne has to say about a good diet.
@joebloggs6922
@joebloggs6922 3 жыл бұрын
@@HerrFinsternis I think Greg can have very fixed ideas of what people should be eating. But as a whole he promotes feeling full and satiated even if you're in a deficit. He also promotes it as a sustainable lifestyle you should enjoy rather than a restrictive diet So as a whole I think it's great that he is promoting a healthy, sensible approach to dieting even if as I say he can be a little narrow minded

I've wondered about that too, I kinda hit a weight loss plateau at a time when I was doing 5 weekly hours of cardio, 2 hours of resistance training and having an average daily caloric deficit of about 300+, I then dropped two hours of cardio, and ate a 400+ caloric surplus on the days I didn't exercise (two days), and suddenly I'm losing 0,3 kg every week while increasing muscle mass (or at least it looks that way). Obviously my caloric surplus and deficit calculations assume (wrongly) that the online caloric maintenance calculators are correct, I'd assume losing 20 kg and doing so much cardio might have slowed my metabolism a bit.

What I was taught having 4+ meals but remaining at the same calories per day will keep insulin from spiking too high. Examples …a 450 calorie meal x 4 =1800 will have lower insulin than a 600 calorie meal x3 =1800. Is this accurate? Also 4x 450 calorie meals will have a better protein timing assuming the meals are approx 4 hours apart…40g of protein per meal.

I keep pushing myself to return back to a balanced diet because number 1 it’s easier and number 2 I enjoy carbohydrates, particularly fruit, however every time I try to return to a diet that includes carbs, I find my migraine condition becomes exacerbated. Interested to know if you and or anyone else has any knowledge of a potentially reason or mechanism behind such a phenomenon.

I enjoy your videos Layne - this one also on point. Correction though, as a fellow chiropractor myself, we actually get a lot of education on nutrition and it's because of that baseline education in nutrition I've always appreciated what you were trying to clarify on all these claims people are out here making . The issue that I think has happened here with Dr. Berg is he is has trained postgraduate in "functional medicine" which basically is offshoot of conventional medicine replacing meds with supplements, conventional labs with functional labs and simply offers a new diet plan. He is simply regurgitating what he has learned in these seminars and conferences. You'd be shocked how almost all of my colleagues teach the same stuff as him due to this type of functional medicine education. They make a lot of money off of it too.

Btw a lot of people are deficient in B1. Especially people eating shit load of white rice and simple sugars in form of gels etc.. When you do some endurance exercise.. B1 is maybe the most important micronutrient for sugar metabolism and also energy production. I highly recommend thiamin in the most bioavailable form TTFD. It will be huge difference in energy level if you have some degree of deficiency.. Benfotiamin is also good. Regular thiamine hcl that is in most B vitamin complexes has very low bioavailability and you need to take very high doses..

I've read that the reverse diet is not necessary. Just hop on your new maintanance calories straight after you finish a cut and the metabolism and hormones will reset themselves. Aworkoutroutine from google was the source.

@4:17 - You said that (fasting) induces a calorie deficit in SOME people? Also - there IS published evidence that fasting initially INCREASES metabolic rate. Think it was Dulloo or Drenick, did indirect calorimetry daily during a fasting study, been awhile since I read the paper but believe it was an increase after 24 hours, back to baseline at 48 hours & marginal decreases day to day afterwards. I have no idea if with alternate day fasting you'd see the increase consistently, not aware of any studies showing that, have seen studies on alt day fasting showing losses in nitrogen @ 24 hour fasted, with return to baseline on feeding days and a net balance over the period of a week - very small differences day to day so sensitivity of DEXA should also be considered.

@@biolayne1 PMID: 8172872 - increase of 96 kcal/day - PMID: 10837292 - increase of 193 kcal/day Conclusion: "Resting energy expenditure increases in early starvation, accompanied by an increase in plasma norepinephrine. This increase in norepinephrine seems to be due to a decline in serum glucose and may be the initial signal for metabolic changes in early starvation." Both studies mention increase in norepinephrine as the probable increase in metabolic rate, it more than doubled in the 2nd study cited AND both used kJ/min, which I converted to kcal/day if you want to check my math. The reason fasting might increase metabolic rate in the short term (I believe up to 72 hours) whereas a VLCD may not, is the magnitude of the shift in norepinephrine. I've seen increases on a VLCD of 20%, one study above reported increases of over 100%. The increases reported as small and aren't going to result in significantly more weight being lost, I think the point is short term fasting (1-3 days) isn't going to crater metabolic rate as some might be suggesting.

Layne there is a video on youtube called "fasting vs eating less, what's the difference" and they talk about Minnesota starvation experiment. They tried 2 diets, 3200 calories and 1500 calories. Some of them were eating lower then 1000 calories a day and after 6 months their strength went down by 50%, they got sick, always feeling cold and etc. As a result they said that eating low calorie diet makes you lose more muscle and keeps more fat compared to fasting. They also talk about man fasting for 382 days without any health problems. Can you make a video about this? What could be the reason of people becoming sick cause 1500 calories are not so small amount, they were just eating mostly refined carbs. Here's the link (/watch?v=APZCfmgzoS0)

That 382 day fast was done by a 450 lb man. I think it's safe to assume his body basically ate itself. An "average" weight person wouldn't be able to go this long without complications. He was given electrolytes and vitamins daily, drank water, tea and coffee, and occasionally had small amounts of milk and/or sugar in his beverages.

Here's the problem.. I'm sure both arguments or diets or ways of eating have there merits.. The problem with most people that are really overweight and try to count calories is the old Caories in calories out BS! If this were true then all calories would be created equal ..So why not eat candy bars and bread and Rice and pasta everyday! I like how I see the argument about what's best for energy and running 🏃‍♂️💯 ... Most of the people that have alot of weight to lose can't even walk very well till they get the weight off and unless you are under 35 I would recommend another form of cardio .. Like swimming walking, biking and weight training 💪.. The problem with this video is someone that has started a low carb diet and is even doing ok with it but is having trouble staying disciplined watches this video and thinks they can just go back to eating carbs again and still keep losing the same amount of weight... That's BS!!

@@brendaklinger3339 I totally agree with you. However, not being able to stick to any kind of diet might be a problem of a dieter not the diet itself. I think when it comes to weight loss, everything is way more COMPLEX. We all know that caloric deficit is a must. But how to create it consistently and stick to it, that is whole another topic:) ADHERENCE is the problem with any type of diet, is what I might be trying to say :D

Whey protein raises insulin yes but without excessive amounts of carbs, there isnt enough blood glucose to be converted into fatty acids. No, fats have very little effect on Insulin and blood glucose levels. And yes, being in a Calorie deficit for long periods of time will absolutely ruin your metabolic rate. The body will do whatever it needs to do to conserve energy and not die.

Been waiting for you to roast this guy for a long time, after he made me go on a year long keto diet in which my overall health really suffered. I started struggling with depression like symptoms (due to decreased domanine and serotonine transport) severe sleep problems, huge amounts of stress and many problems with low blood sugar crashes when I was exercising. And the fasting made it all even worse. Even though I was in ketosis, I was feeling horrible and was overeating when I was finally "allowed" to have meals. My most succesful weight loss came this past spring on a moderate-high carb diet. I lost weight and was happy at the same time with little to no sleep issues and way less mood swings. Mr Berg, if that keto lifestyle was so healthy, why didn't I loose weight and why was I feelning so horrible? Lol.
@noonevincecarterfan
@noonevincecarterfan 3 жыл бұрын
@John webb Well after being in ketosis for months, I think my body had suffient time to become keto adapted. Here's the thing: I was and am training very high intensity with both weights and cardio almost every day, some days I have two hard workouts. Fats are simply not efficient fuel for me and my performance was so poor during those times..and my LDL colesterol was though the roof. After I dropped keto, my performance overall went up and my recovery was better. My crazy dirty carb cravings actually went away when I allowed myself to eat things like rye bread and oatmeal. And even though diet is important for exercise and "physical" health my mental health is just as important and I don't want to do something like the keto diet again and harm myself that way. I don't know where are you are getting your above mentioned carb numbers from, but they seem arbitrary to me and the needs would seem a lot more individually based (like you mentioned yourself) - on body size, activity level and enventual health issues. Fats are eccential, so no one should go zero fats, however fats are not nessesarily superior to carbs, it really depends. The most harmful type macronutrients might be transfats due to their ability to be stored in the fats cells and stay there for months or years and act as small inflammatory factories. As for me, I make sure to stay away from the more unhealthy sources or carbs, fats and proteins, I control my stress and sleep and stay at a fairly healthy muscle mass and bodyfat ratios. Might not work for everyone else, but personally I've never felt better.

@John webb Well thanks for the interest. I'm 33 now and play basketball on a relatively high level. This has been a passion of mine for years. Being a short player at about 5ft9 and 160-165 pounds, I have to be quick and explosive on the floor and watch my weight. So I basically schedule my training very different depending on the time of season. I will only train for hypertrophy for 6-8 weeks a year in the off season, I'll do quite a bit of plyometrics for another few weeks in the offseason and then slowly transition into more cardiovascular training where, like you know, the demends on the system are very different. I've become very aware of overtraining and don't want to burn my candle in both end by trying to force my body to meet many different demands at the same time. Now as we approach training camp, it's only about conditioning and fat loss and lift as little as possible to maintain strength. Apart from that, some of my training is not done for my own goals, but for others, as I'm a fitnessinstructor, and hosts several gym classes a week, which I have to factor into my overall stress levels and recovery. I don't count macros but freestyle it by eating 3 solid meals plus shakes during my training which really helps with energy and avoiding blood sugar crashes.

@John webb his "over complication" shows that he knows what he's talking about. He's no VShred. Plus, he's jumping back through the hoops that these misleading cult leaders jump through to make their "science" work, in an attempt to debunk what they are saying. Personally i think he does a fantastic job in this. He's even come out with a different stance on a topic as he gained new information (something these zealots refuse to do). Maybe he used to be more polite and more professional, but maybe that wasn't getting people to listen to him so he said screw it? Does he come off as arrogant? Sure. Is that style offensive to some people? Sure. I'm not suggesting listening to everyone. I'm suggesting listening to him specifically. His background is geared towards this. And the subject isn't nearly as simple as you're claiming. There are so many nuances to it and Layne tries to remind us of this constantly.

He’s a quack but long term water fasting deffinately drastically increases metabolism in my case. I was maintaining on around 3000 calories for months and on a 7 week fast lost an average of 3kg a week for a total of 21kg fat and muscle. It was actually 27kg lost but after 2 weeks eating was 21 kg so that’s the amount of stored calories burned not including glycogen and water. I would have been burning over 4500 calories a day perhaps from high adrenaline and cortisol. Anecdote but I know it’s true for me anyway. But that’s long term fasting not intermittent fasting on keto diet which I’d guess slows down metabolism faster than a moderate carb 3-5 meal a day plan
