If Thomas DeLauer is an expert at anything it's stringing together a bunch of words that make him sound smart to the average person when in reality he can't even grasp the most basic nutritional concepts.

Hi Sean, I'm subbed to you both. But yeah Thomas can blind us with science and bodily chemicals we've never heard of but I always recommend real world experience. ie: viewers should experiment with their diet to find what works for them. As for me I do IF (2 meals a day max) because it helps more with my hunger/appetite rather eating little and often and I have a ton of fruit and veg each day. I've leaned out very well doing this. Proof positive that not everything you read or see it necessary for fat loss.

@@kamo7293 “Ezekiel 4:9” is a brand of bread made from a variety of sprouted grains and legumes (the name refers to a Bible verse where they talk about making bread.) One of its most noticeable quirks is that it has to be kept frozen because otherwise it goes bad within a few days. Ezekiel bread does have its benefits: the combination of grains and legumes provides a more complete protein than regular wheat flour breads, and it’s a good source of several micronutrients. As often happens though, fans crank the claims up to the extreme, like if you’re going to have bread it *must* be this kind or you should just start digging your grave now.

So If my maintenance calories are 2100 per day, I could eat 2100 calories of pure sugar only, nothing else, every day for the next 6 months and have no change in body weight or body composition? ......... I would love an answer to this because I’m almost %1000000 sure 2100 calories of Chicken, Fish and Vegetables, even when balanced out with energy expenditure (so adding more meals if necessary to be equivalent to to the absorption rate of 2100 Cals of sugar) would yield far different results.

I like to think of CICO as a gas tank on a car; If you drive 10 miles everyday to and from work and fill up your "gas tank" with just enough to cover that distance the "gas tank" will never go up or down but if you put in enough gas to go 15 miles a day your gas tank will eventually overflow and if you put only enough gas to go 5 miles it will eventually be empty.

Nah... The physiological burn energie (food energy) is not the same as the physical (Ws=J) or the measured ones with a Bomb calorimeter. The physiological burn energie datas (the ones printed on the labels) are over 100 years old measurements, done with pigs and humans, sealed in containers etc..etc... And for carbs they could have gigantic uncertainties. If you look at the label for beens...they don't distinguish if cooked or raw...or whether you have the right bacteria to help with digestion...

The utility of seeing weight loss as a CICO is the problem not that energy isn't going to matter. We simply can't reliably calculate how much energy expenditure we are having or the EFFECTIVE energy that we are consuming. You know for example that hormones like leptin and insulin have an impact on expenditure, so the main take-at-home message from people criticising the CICO method is that food QUALITY is the main thing not the amount of "CALORIES" on the nutritional label. I for example was fat eating around 2400 kcal at 235 pounds now I'm down to 190 pounds and eating 3-5 k kcal per day, but still losing fat since im not consuming carbs, also my activity level is the same.

So, not necessarily what DeLauer was talking about, but isn't the steel man argument about calories really about how the body reacts to the macronutrients? Satiety, etc? To be clear, I am in agreement that a calorie is a calorie, but isn't a better argument that macronutrients are not equal?
@wellnesspathforme6236
@wellnesspathforme6236 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's the argument when properly formulated. For some reason, this is hard to formulate and, apparently, hard to explain. BioLayne explains it correctly here if you pay attention to what he says. No calories are lost to the ether after being eaten. Some calorie sources and amounts increase insulin excessively in some people, which results in eventual lowered blood glucose (insulin can persist), and drives hunger in some people. When this occurs, the insulin also makes it harder to utilize fat as energy, so the double-whammy is that one's energy level takes a hit, too. Excess insulin, plus increased fat storage (insulin removes the glucose by eventually storing it as fat (if the muscles and organ(s) -- can't recall which one -- are topped off), plus more difficult access to fat for energy (body in glucose reduction mode), means one has to fight much harder to exercise more and eat less. Dr. Barry Sears, PhD put forth this argument in his many Zone Diet books. An added bonus to keeping insulin low is that it also reduces the level of systemic inflammation. IIRC Dr. Seat's argument correctly, elevated insulin tend to trigger elevated delta-5-desaturase which, in turn results in an increased production of pro-inflammatory arachidonic acid (AA), especially if eicopentaenoic acid (EPA) is relatively low. Now, all this assumes that the magnesium and bio-copper status of your mitochondria are not sufficiently compromised as to effectively disable them. Once that happens, well, lots of things break down as the body triages the situation. The go-to guy on this issue is Morley Robbins. The key players are depleted magnesium, depleted retinol, depleted copper(+1), depleted ceruloplasmin-bound copper, excessive toxic levels of carcinogenic fortified iron, and excessive ceruloplasmin-unbound copper.

I dont think i agree with thomas either. So what causes higher thermogenic effect in whole foods ? I am just thinking if maybe fiber requires more energy to be broken down. Less processed foods are more likely to have more fiber in them thus they have a higher thermogenic effect. Maybe fiber digestion requires those extra calories for the creation of the appropriate enzymes. Also, we know that protein has a higher thermogenic effect and more whole foods tend to have more protein as well so maybe that might contribute to this effect. (Just claims i am just thinking out loud)

The reason why Thomas is so nice to you, Layne, is because of the fight flight or make friends response. Someone clearly more knowledgeable, AND potentially hostile illicits this response. You could lose in a fight, you won't gain anything from running, but making friends could validate your own stance. His facial and body language is (mostly) congruent with what he says, so he's either a really good actor, or he's really uneducated. Either way, he's not stupid. He's particular in his responses to others. And, he wouldn't be successful if he was stupid. I think he knows that he preys on the naivety of others.

There is a doctor on Twitter saying a type 1 diabetic can eat 10,000 calories and still lose weight due to insulin levels. Which part of CICO would be present for that to be possible. I think it sounds wrong and ridiculous.

This is all clear, conservation of energy and metabolic adaptation. But what if some part of nutrition therefore that part of energy doesn't get absorbed. Like insoluble fiber and too much fat that has a laxative effect. Keto: 1. Fat gets absorbed and used way more gardually than carbs, insulin doesn't increase that much so you get satiated for a longer time and you get more stable energy. 2. Part of fat doesn't get absorbed cause of fiber or it comes out as a laxative. So on keto you basically get into a caloric deficit without realizing it.

I’d love to see Layne debate Dr Robert Lustig. That would be the debate of the century. Not to mention, it would clear a lot of things up.

Actually, you were kinda lenient when he said 17 calories versus 33 calories and over the day it could be 100 to 200 calories. Assuming it was 16 calorie difference, that is 10 sandwiches. Who eats that? And then there is what you said.....

I'm actually really surprised Whey Protein has a (significant) thermogenic response, that's a pleasant surprise I guess. Luckily I can eat what I want and maintain where I want but those are random nuggets of information I live for.

I don't understand all this prejudice against "processed" foods. Just about all foods are processed -- meat, pultry, dairy products, milk, use of fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and so on for vegetables and fruits. If food wasn't "processed," we would all be suffering from botulism or some other terrible thing that went away a hundred years ago or so because of scientific food processing. Maybe they mean adding sugar to food? Well that would be sugarizing which is one small form of "processing."

When people talk about "a calorie is not a calorie" they are really referring to the different sources of calories having different effects just as you explained. They are not saying the calories are not equivalent in energy. I don't think there is really disagreement. They are just using simpler phrasing to make a catchy title. It would be madness to say eating protein calories causes the same metabolic response as eating sugar calories. They are equivalent energy but sugar has radically different metabolic effects compared to protein.

Either way it still doesn't matter. The guy living on processed foods lowers his intake until he starts losing weight. So he has to take in 200 fewer calories than he thought, big deal.

So this idea would make for a very different kind of what the fitness, but y’all should look up this guy “Tarrare” he’s a guy that lived in the 1700’s and his eating habits are ACTUALLY legendary. A KZbinr called samonella did a video on the history of this guy, but there should really be a video on this guy from a nutrition perspective. Seriously, look up tarrare, you will not be disappointed.
