I agree a lot with this. I feel like flexibility is like the side mashed potatoes in your dinner dish. It’s nice to have but it’s also not the main thing of your meal nor the factor to be considered a ‘good’ dancer

You've made plenty of videos about not being discouraged to start dance later, but honestly, this video is what gave me the most determination and relief

I love this video so much. I'm naturally super inflexible (it took me 4 years to get my right split and I'm still just close to my left and middle splits), but I always make sure I listen to my body while I'm stretching to make sure I'm safe. I get a lot of pain in the back of my left knee if I push myself too far in my straddle splits, so I always try and ease off when I start to feel that. But also, I've found myself being more drawn to choreographing movements over skills with names. It's harder to explain the movements, but I feel like my choreography has improved so much since I stopped limiting myself to just steps with names. (I feel like you'd probably like the dances I've made over the years! Idk if you'll see this comment, though haha) You're such a wonderful role model for dancers! Keep doing what you're doing! :)

Thanks for having a video that talks about this topic. It's very encouraging for someone like me who has always struggled with flexibility since I started dancing. It reminds me that I am still a great dancer even if flexibility is a struggle.

I remember I was watching world of dance one evening and all I saw were a bunch of people flipping on the stage. I asked my parents why they were doing gymnastics instead of dancing. All the people who didn’t incorporate flips of some sort in there routines would get a low score. This made me frustrated. So thank you for this video.

It's really sad that people now think that actual dancing without a bunch of flexibility tricks looks "boring". It feels like nowadays you get away with bad technique if you can do a bunch of tricks. It's so discouraging. I am not flexible but wanted to dance, so I went for tap because everything else but ballroom seemed to require hyper flexibility for anyone to consider you "good" at it. I get "oh that looks so easy/boring" all. the. time...but people who couldn't tap to save their lives, even if they can put their leg straight up to their head. It breaks my heart to think that many teens and adults probably don't dance because they think that hyper flexibility is a requirement.

Thank you Auti. I've recently been struggling to see my worth as a dancer because I'm not as flexible or strong as some of my peers and I started out late. This video made me cry because for some reason I've always felt like I needed to be flexible to be a good dancer and I never realized that my flexibility doesn't determine my ability to dance.

i’ve been trying to get more flexible for like 3 years now. do you have any advice for gradual improvement? i feel like whenever i make any progress i go on vacation or something and i don’t have time to stretch and lose it all. thanks so much for the encouragement, it’s nice to have the affirmation that i can be a beautiful dancer without being super flexible.

Agree. One of my teachers says that is gymnastics not dancing. Another teacher I have who is in his 50's said he took a jazz class and the other students could wrap their legs around their heads. He is no where as flexible. However, when it came to the dance portion of the class, he was the best in the class. ♥

If my teacher had told me these words I would probably never abandoned my passion,,, after 15 years I finally found the strength to come back again, I now teach dance to adults and don't really give a s*** about how flexible I am. Thanks for your inspiring words :-)

Try Yin Yoga to improve your flexibility, stay well hydrated and eat well. Getting flexible if you're not is a long term project, it takes time. Take this advice and be kind to yourself.

There’s a BIG difference between dance and gymnastics. One is an art, while the other is a sport.
