In this episode, Dr. Betters answers the question, "Does God still want us to tithe 10% of our gross income when we are struggling financially? Despite us both having full-time jobs and cutting back in sooo many ways, because of unexpected medical bills, an unexpected funeral bill, etc, we still can never pay our credit card bill. It's a huge weight on our shoulders. No matter how hard I try, I'm ashamed that I'm not able to give my tithe out of joy as God desires because I'm always thinking how 1/2 of our yearly tithe amount would eliminate our credit card bill. I wish the Bible said more about the subject."

i had a epiphany the other day. Remember when peter and John healed the lame begger how first the lame beggar asked for money and they had no money as was attested by the statement "Silver and gold have I none'. I was thinking about that and it occured to me that had the early church been tithing into their ministries then these guys would have been loaded and would have had more than enough to give to the beggar... Also the early church gave so that the money could be distributed to the saints who were in need and lack and not for the supporting of church leadership.

When Jesus was saying you ought to tithe, he was speaking to a pharisee under the law of Moses. The new testiment didn't start till after the death of Christ

Tithing doesn't apply today it was for Israel's system of supporting Levitical priests with food.........the tithe was always FOOD because the Levites who were the government weren't allowed to own land. The remaining 11 tribes gave 10% which roughly equaled 110% so the Levites could survive. Churches who preach the tithe and Malachi 3:10 are not rightly dividing. We are to give today joyfully out of what we HAVE ALREADY.......no running up credit cards to hit 10%........the young Jewish believers in Jerusalem who split up the land they had eventually went broke and Paul's little churches had to support them. It is no get rich scheme for sure.....and the prosperity gospel is a perverted one.

Whether to tithe or not depend whether you are a pastor whose livelihood depends on the tithe. When you are out of job...no such thing is reverse tithe...you are left high and dry...been there done that...do not expect handouts from the church...giving to the church is easy...taking from the church is ....??? No no.

Dr. Betters, Thank you for the video. Great stuff! What about tithing to the church..? I have found that my church has not done anything to reach the lost, evangelise the community, nor build relationships to continue building others... We haven't left yet, but should I pay my tithe where I'm at? Or into a ministry that is reaching people?

I struggle with this....as a sole proprietor of a business, my income is not always stable and when I get money, I am always uncertain of when next I will have money. So I keep thinking what if I tithe and never get any more money or get broke? I realize now I am being of little faith and I should really test God as you advise here.

Here are a few key points that everyone needs to understand, on the topic of tithing: (1) Levites receive tithes, and no one else. God Himself mandated this (see Numbers 18:21-22). (2) The tithe of Abraham to Melchizeded was a tithe of tradition, not religion, becasue there were no religious or legal requirement to tithe, as he did. (3) The tithe promised by Jacob was similarly one of tradition, not a religious observance (4) No gentile has ever been required to tithe in the Old testament. Only Jews. And only to Levites, because of Numbers 18:21-22. (5) No gentile has ever been asked to tithe in the New Testament, and certainly, not the church (6) Every mention to tithe in the New Testament was directed to Jews, as was required by the law of Moses, never to Gentiles (7) Gentile believers were never required to live by the law of Moses in the New Testament; this law is what mandated tithing. Concerning giving, or tithing, or prosperity, Malachi 3:8-12 is not the full counsel of God. It is an excerpt, quoted to the church since the dark Ages as a deliberate misrepresentation of God's Word. There is even a date when this actually started. When we give, in the New testament, it is Jesus' promise in Luke 6:38 whereby we are blessed, instead of the act of tithing. Jesus said, "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again." If you're interested in learning more, I have researched and written about this in "Tither, You Are Free!", which you can pick up on Amazon. Be blessed!

What about giving out of fear. Is not the fear of the Lord the beginning of wisdom? Does that not require faith to fear God?

If you would have keep reading 2 Corinthians 8. Paul tells you exactly why he wants the Corinthians to give and it isn't to shame them. 14 But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:

Thanks for that answer. That is a difficult question to answer. If I am honest, though, this leaves more questions. Here is what I heard in terms of the answer: Tithing is a good thing God commanded in the OT. In the NT, the Pharisees are commended for tithing so diligently, but upbraided for missing the bigger picture, that of not doing it for the right reasons-mercy and justice--out of a heart of love. In Corinthians, the rich church, they are exhorted to give more and do it cheerfully. The important thing is the attitude behind the giving, although 10% is what 'should be done' according to what Christ says. If you cannot do it cheerfully, don't do it at all, as it may not do any good. Yet one is encouraged to prove God and begin small, increasing as God blesses you until you can give more than 10%. The logical conclusion I would draw would be why not prove God by the starting with the 10% He has set? Would He not bless that if it is done in a right heart? Seems to be He would bless that attitude more than starting small in doubt, and then increasing as God responds. That would seem to be the logical conclusion of the point you bring out.

This is a very poor answer to the writer's question. The misinterpretation of Malachi Ch. 3 begins with the assertion that God was speaking to the nation of Israel. He was speaking to the Levite priests. See Ch. 2. Read 2nd Timothy 2:15 Study to show thyself approved, rightly dividing the word of truth. This is how to avoid false teachers of God's word.
Does God really not give us more than we can handle?
