Congrats! I was doing this kind of fasting in my early teenage years when I was going sport competitions, great thing to do. That time during the day I was shameless and eat junk food, drinking soda, name it ...but I was 47-49 kg. Now 2+ years later when I started again, I became so hungry after a few weeks and became impatient, but after the first two months I can say I feel again better. Started on 59kg and the aim is 54kg. Our tummy needs a rest sometimes as our mind does when we go to sleep after a long day...

Yes, works for me and I am a very similar build and age to you. The 16:8 pattern isn't set in stone though, you could go 17:7 for example. It depends on when your fat burning kicks in and how well you cope with hunger pangs. I go for a swim every morning which helps me eat later, because I can't after exercise, maybe that's just me. It is important to remain hydrated though, really helps with your energy levels. I have a cheat day once a week as well. God bless, and are your feet size 10 (UK)?

High intensity exercise is also crucial. A pound of fat contains something like 4000 calories, and as it's just storage, takes very little energy to build. A pound of muscle contains about 700 calories, but to BUILD a pound of muscle takes nearly 3,000. Also, muscles burn more calories (at rest) than fat cells.

Intermittent fasting has worked for me, it kind of goes hand in hand with the Keto or at least a low carb diet as your insulin levels would be all over the place otherwise & you would feel awful for the majority of your fasts. I'm quite happy with intermittent fasting but if you really want to tap into your autophagy then prolonged fasting of 24, 48 or 72 hours is said to work wonders.

I’ve been doing this for a year and a half. I drink coffee, water or tea during the day and eat one meal in the evening. I fast the remaining time. I learned about doing IF by watching Dr. Jason Fung’s videos. I am diabetic but now my blood sugars are in the normal range without taking any medication for my diabetes. In the beginning I lost a lot of weight. Now I’m maintaining a normal weight, no desire to cheat or binge eat which is something I struggled with all my life. Good luck to you, Russell.

Never allow anyone who eats three meals and snacks all and every day that fasting is a type of eating disorder. It's actually the opposite because fasting is probably the most effective healing method that we could utilize.

You could also try putting your eating window in the morning. I have my breakfast at 7:30am, before work. A nice big fruit salad with walnuts, a bit of cereal and yogurt. Then I have my second meal at around 1:30, heavy sourdough rye bread with tahini, and lots of vegetables, salad, soup etc.. After that, I just have lemon water and herbal tea for the rest of the day. I don't feel hungry at all! I'm 52 and all the symptoms of peri-menopause that I had previously, have all gone away. My waist is 28 inches (I don't have a scale) which is fine with me.

I have fasted semi-regularly (usually 24 hrs only drinking water) for the past 30 yrs. I do it to give my body a chance to focus on cleansing and healing and to come to terms with early issues around food consumption (anxiety binge eating in late teens & early 20s which completely ended through fasting) and I want to share that I experience Wim Hoff's type of breath held out as a kind of fast from breathing/oxygen because of the similar experience of bringing emotional stagnation and trouble to the surface and burning/purging it.

It allows the organs to rest and focus the energy on healing instead of digesting, it’s been proven in almost every experiment on animals that they live longer when they are cut back at least a third of their eating, as far as human fasting I’ve never felt any difference from intermittent but if you stretch it a little longer and eat a little smaller I think you do feel the effects! That’s just my experience… but if I were to guess, I would say it also depends on what you eat during the periods you are eating, and not to over stuff yourself ect.. You can’t just pig out for six hours a day and think you’re going to feel good

I just would like to know if that's a "splurge"/"cheat" for you, or if you found vegan chocolate that is really good. Been doing IF consistently for the past 5 years now. Don’t worry about social events etc, IF is not a diet it’s a lifestyle, you can enjoy a moment with friends and family and have “unhealthy” stuff as long as you’re able to come back to the routine on the next day. I’m 60, I’ve been eating keto + intermittent fasting for the last 50 months…I’m mostly an OMAD (one meal a day) averaging 7-9 meals per week….once you’re thru the adaptation period (prolly the first 5-7 days) your body becomes a hybrid. You can run off of fat or carbs. The benefits of fasting are huge…100 years ago there were fasting clinics all over America. Of course there’s no money in not eating so Big Ag began preaching the lie that we should begin grazing all day long to “keep our metabolism rev’d up”. Of course this is horse shit advice. Constant grazing leads to insulin resistance…Insulin Resistance is the root cause of 95% of the lifestyle illnesses that keep people sick and on pharmaceutical drugs…. Russell, I appreciate your shining light on all the topics that are plaguing us in this crazy world right now. Control of humans with poisonous processed ‘food-like’ matter is just another way that the corporations and the Bill Gates’ plan to keep us sick and in fear. Having metabolic flexibility is a way to escape addictions to their BS ‘food’…. I can’t say that I’m a big fan of vegan, I tried it for 1.5 years a decade ago when I began experimenting with different ways of eating…but give it a go and listen to your body… Keep bringing/exposing the truth!!🙏🏼🙏🏼

Love what you said. 100% agree. Big food, big pharma and even the diet industry want to keep us fat, unhealthy and a constant stream of revenue. Unless you lean on the concept that everything "always" changes, degrades, oxidizes and eventually dies. Not trying to troll or be a bummer. On the contrary. Avoiding sugar, bread and pasta is a big part of this if you want to feel less hungry and be more successful at IF. I'm not a vegan so the choices are easier for me, I eat OMAD which is almost always meat/chicken/fish + some steamed green vegetables. As a result, I've shed 5 stones in weight over the last 3 years, and I'm approaching my ideal weight. And I just don't feel hungry any more, while at the same time still loving food. My emotions are completely stable these days, and my mind is much clearer than it ever was, no more brain fog. Avocados are amazing. And I still have cheat days when I will eat any shit that I like, you just don't go mad with it and make sure you go back to the normal routine afterwards.

Yep. Fasting is so easy to do with a low-carb/high-fat diet, specifically ketogenic. And that kind of eating works best with animal foods, whether omnivorous or carnivorous. One could do a keto diet as a vegan, but it would be much more challenging. Vegetarian keto would be much more doable because it would still allow plenty of fatty animal foods.

Great video! The myth around soy raising esteogen has been debunked. It's been shown that it contains phytoestrogens as opposed to mammalian esteogen, which has protective characteristics rather than any estrogen-raising properties. Which makes sense, as when compared to dairy milk, which is literally from a pregnant animal with extremely high sex hormones, esteogen included 😊

I just wanted to add that flax, soy and all phytoestrogens are beneficial for menopausal women, particularly stressed women who produce oestrogen mainly from the adrenals. Lol Cow hormones are too low to exert any biological effects in humans from their milk. Hormones are excreted through urine, not milk. Phytoestrogens mimic estrogen in the body, they bind to hormone receptors just like the real hormone. Estrogen in the body is essential but excess estrogen is not.

From what I've learned over the past year or so, fasting and intermittent fasting, together with absolutely no processed carbs, 'bad' oils, and definitely no sugar, is the key to victory over illness. I've also read (and experienced somewhat) the euphoria that comes from longer fasts and the sense of well-being. There's a reason most religions of the world have used fasting at one time or another. You should definitely find great benefit in your new routine Russell. Best wishes! Keep us posted on what you learn from the experience.

i would have thought that too, but after doing it myself, i can finally understand why 1000 calorie limits and exercise never helped me lose weight. it's because i was eating or drinking all throughout the day instead. if you have a soda, and you drink it in 15 minutes, your blood sugar goes up, and comes back down after a time. if you drink that same soda but sip slowly over 2 hours, every sip is triggering your blood sugar, and your bodys insulin is constantly triggered. thus, insulin resistance is born over time.

I’m so glad you mentioned eating disorders, I’m a health coach who works with binge & emotional eaters. & yes you’re so right it’s really important to have a healthy relationship with food before you do these things. If you’re someone who’s actively struggling with binge or emotional eating it’s really important not to restrict as it generally causes more binging & overeating. This doesn’t just go for intermittent fasting but all diets in general. I think what’s really important & what I’ve found with clients is not looking at WHAT you eat (if you’re struggling with food) but WHY. What’s the intention? If the intention is self loathing, punishment, judgement & force, it’s likely not to be helpful. If it’s self love & care it can be a totally different story!! Once your relationship with food improves it’s easier to start making changes from a place of love for your body & health! ❤️ Thank you for sharing your experience with us & can’t wait to come watch your show in Oxford in October! ❤️

I wish this comment could be pinned to the top. So many people (myself included) used/use IF as an "alternative" to their disordered eating, but it's still disordered for many. IF in society is accepted, hip, very promising like so many trends, but if not done correctly or with a trained guide can be really destructive and harmful. I appreciate that he aknowledged this, as many don't while discussing IF, just wish it was earlier in the video or given a little more air time. Given how sick our society is, I'm sure many need to hear it!

I fast for 72 hours between Sunday 5pm and Wednesday 5pm and then I go to one meal a day Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. I did this before lockdown and was losing weight like crazy and I've never felt better. I gave up when (useless) lockdowns started and my drinking increased significantly, but now I'm back to it and I'm feeling great again. Oh, by the way, I have WHATEVER I want on a Saturday. Very interesting Russell, I started IF in January because I had done some research and read a lot about how it helps emotional eating, which I have done for years, so I started on January 11th, got myself an app set up and started on the 16:8, it was hell to start with (I wont lie) but I continued having a cheat day every week, then after about 6 weeks I started to incorporate light exercise, which I built up gradually, I started to intuitively eat cleaner in my eating window, drinking much more water and herbal teas, I cut out sugar and milk in drinks (in feeding window too) i treat myself to a couple of slices of bread a week, but i dont miss bread at all, i have lost 26kg so far, gone from size 18-20 to size 12, i do use a slendertone ab belt which really helped kick start my core, i am just so glad that i started, i am now on a 24hr fast on mondays and the rest are the warrior fast (20-4) they were tough at first but now are a breeze, i would have never thought that i would be able to do this, spent so many years trying so many different diets and failing, but this isnt a diet, it is a lifestyle change, i am 50 next year, i have struggled with my weight since i was early 20's, I am now the size I was in my early 20's before I gained the weight, but I have to say that the mindset helps, I have meditated seriously every day for the last 3 years, working on myself from the inside out, it was the meditation that started all this, so for me it was finding the right meditation practice for me, and also using many different "tools" together whereas before I used them individually without any result. Much Love to you on your journey 💖

@@rvfiascoI had a lot of childhood trauma and fron previous relationships that I had to work through, I had done counselling etc, and I was meditating but not regularly, until about 3 years ago when I kind of hit a brick wall mentally, emotionally I was a wreck, so I has 2 options let it consume me or try seriously to heal myself, I was introduced to a meditation practice and I was that bad that I struggled to reach 5 minutes, but I built it up, I was persistent and yes it was difficult some days my mind would battle against me, then one day I just decided to surrender to the meditation, and it got a lot easier. I am able to observe the experiences from my past down as an observer, not making an opinion from it, and I have days and night filled with compassion. The meditation literally turned my life around, then I decided to try the fasting, but i was a good 3 years of continuous work on myself to get to that point, but i felt ready to tackle the emotional eating and it worked. The mind will doubt, it always trys to come in an sabotage but I catch it now. So now most days in meditation I can just observe the ramblings of my mind without getting caught up in it, sometimes it catches me and I say "oh there it goes" that's the observer, I noticed I got caught up, and I start again, the mind does what it does but we dont need to get up in its drama, I learnt that

I’ve recently started switching things up a little by including a 36hr fast once a week or so. The rest of the week, I mostly stick with my noon to 6pm eating window. I very rarely feel hungry before that time anyway but if I didn’t eat enough fat the night before, I’ll have a break-fast a bit earlier in the morning. @MarmaladeINFP
@MarmaladeINFP 3 жыл бұрын
That is probably true for most people. Fasting is much more difficult when one is constantly hungry and craving carbs. But Jason Fung started using fasting for many of his patients who were working class ethnic immigrants. Carbs were too central to their dietary identity. So, it depends. I must admit that it's been about impossible for me to convince anyone I know to try a moderately low-carb diet, much less a keto diet. Then again, I can't say anyone I know has convinced to try fasting either.

IF is much easier if one goes low carb for a while first. Low carb makes one "fat adapted", so going into your fat stores and using those for energy is much easier. Intermittent fasting has helped me get control over the ghrelin/leptin cycle. It stops me from feeling hungry between meals. When I wake up in the morning, I'm not starving for breakfast. I can just have a cup of coffee, and I'm good to go until late afternoon. But because of severe food allergies (wheat/egg/lactose), I have to be careful what I do eat at meals to keep from ending up in ER. I began combining intermittent fasting with carb cycling to maintain my weightloss. Three days of primary carbs - oats, rice/rice flour foods, veggies, and fruit. Then three days of low carb foods.

Yes it works but people can overdue it. I use it intermittently ... not everyday. From my own experience it should be tempered with seasonality too. I have no interest in doing it in the summer but once the days shorten, I want to do it naturally. Putting a little weight on in the summer when you are a healthy body weight is good for you wrt to storing fat soluble vitamins. You have clearly put on some muscle as well; so take that into consideration. I follow a more ancestral diet (you know what that means) and so I have long given up cravings. In other words, other than the odd yearning for salt, I do not crave anything but just get hungry. This doesn't mean my food doesn't taste great; it does; I enjoy my food but it does not control me anymore. I By the bye, I do NOT need pounds and pounds of food everyday either. I make sure I eat a very nutrient and natural fat rich diet and utilize more of the life I take to sustain my own. Hun, you've really given yourself an uphill battle with this wrt Veganism. And really when you evaluate the actual environmental and humane footprint of a plant-based diet versus an ancestral diet, you discover like with most things, it is really about corporate profits and not the environment or animal well being. I understand you live in a rural setting. You could easily return your diet to vegetarianism in both a humane and environmental way. Free -range eggs and raw, fermented dairy are incredibly good for you. The chickens are protected and given a natural and communal life. It is a symbiotic relationship. Pastured animals are good for the environment. They sequester net carbon and promote top soil creation. Nothing is more natural than animals in a field. I understand the thinking behind veganism and celebrate the beautiful spirits who will try it out. I certainly tried it too. My experience. It is simply not possible without an accompanying mental and physical cost . You appear to be suffering from that now in a small way but still suffering.

I've been eating only during the early evening (1 or 2 meals), no snacks in between, only liquid without sugar, for 2 years now. The secret is to avoid sugar and starches, and IMPORTANT to eat enough fat (coconut, butter, olive - NOT margarine, sunflower, soy or other "vegetable" oils) - see Dr Berg's channel. There's a huge difference between fasting and starvation - difference is in the healthy fats. Don't count calories! Oh and I lost 15kg (from 85 - 70) and sometimes find myself getting hungry only after 26 hours. It becomes a lifestyle. I'm female, 60yrs old, healthy and thus on no meds, not even a headache pill - coz I don't get them anymore :)

IF is phenomenal. Though perhaps swap the runs and cardio for more strength training and yoga as cardio increases cortisol which leads to adrenal fatigue and a plethora of issues.. OMAD keto (coconut oil, nuts & avocado if your vegan ) is my preference, eating between 1-2.. And stop weighing yourself Russell!

Whatever regular fasting regime you try, your body will get used to it and will compensate, and the metabolism will adapt. That is why I think it is better to do the 24-48 hrs fasting 2 or 3 times a month but in a random way. Ramadan & Lent were for this purpose, fast for a lunar month each year to get rid of the toxins and to help regulate metabolism and mental wellbeing. The body doesn't get used to this way as it is always a shock to the system.

You should be fat adapted before you start intermittent fasting. That way you will not be hungry and have no negative effects like headaches. You have to ease in to it.

Great clip Russel. I’ve been intermittent fasting for now over nearly 6 years. I can train on it (running 5 miles in a morning when I wake or yoga/ gym session) but don’t apply it to my weekends or holidays. I’ve just come back from a beautiful yoga retreat where I ate normally but must admit I was looking forward to picking up IF as soon as I returned. Black coffee, green tea and lots of water in my 16 hour fasting window. You’ll nail this Russell 🙏🏻

Gaining 10 kg of pandemic time + child, very familiar :).. I have a practice of always having fruits and vegetables on the table, so whenever I want to eat, at least I can eat healthy. Yesterday, I went camping with about 10 strangers. They were all meat eaters and were laughing how can I survive on nuts, apples, corn, cucumber and sweet pepper. :) then they ate all my nuts.. Lol

I intuitively began to do IF after reaching a breaking point with stomach pains. In spite of being very dismissive of IF prior, due to experiences with partners who starved themselves to lose weight (not IF), I felt a need to do it. Within a week, the pains died down greatly. I still don’t know what ailment it is that I have, the doctors are useless in my area in helping me find that out, but I can now manage and learn to recognise what triggers these intense bouts of pain and live life without wanting to jump out of a window by the end of the day, and without waking up my household when my arse would have a long awaited conversation with the toilet.

in-amittent? lol I lost 65 lbs two years ago doing Keto and fasting. One week out of every month (for about 12 months) I fasted for 7 day (water only). I lost muscle and fat but I got skinny fast. As usual I gained most of it back because I wasn't disciplined enough to stick with it but I still only eat one meal per day which is extreme intermittent fasting. I eat dinner around 3:30 PM and that's it till the next day around 3:30 pm. It's become a habit and I don't get hungry at all. Of the 65 lbs I lost I have reclaimed all but about 25 lbs. I assume those are staying off because of the intermittent fasting. If I go back to pure Keto I'm sure I'd shed more weight.

We are becoming a carbaphobic world. Carbs aren't the enemy. Mother Earth provides carbohydrate rich foods for a good reason. Potatoes, rice, even whole grain breads are healthy. Just look at WFPB individuals and it is obvious that foods that grow out of the soil ARE healthy.

Look up prolonged fasting though, so many more serious benefits. Obviously not all the time if you don’t have a lot of extra fat. The moods and headaches are because you need to replenish electrolytes using the proper salts. Also The 5:2 thing is absolute crap, the fact it’s called fasting is a joke, it’s a low calorie diet which is what actually puts the body into starvation mode which messes with your metabolism. Fasting doesn’t

One of the things that I have noticed in my friends who do intermittent fasting is that they have a tendency to *overeat* at the end of their feeding window. For example if they only allow themselves to eat from 11am to 7pm then they will eat a huge meal before their feeding window closes. Which I think can just add extra stress onto the body and defeat the purpose of having a fasting period. I think that it's much better if you just eat intuitively and according to the body's needs rather than to stress over the exact timing of your feeding window and end up overeating because you know you won't be able to eat again for X amount of hours.

That sounds like your friends are eating processed foods or lots of carbs in their eating window. The idea behind intermittent fasting is to combine it with a low carb, high fat diet. If they are eating good healthy fats in their meals they won't feel the need to overeat just before beginning their fasting period.
