If you're box is too small you invert to increase the volume and it also helps with cooling.

I think it makes enough of difference that it can give you an idea if your box is the wrong volume for your system goals without getting another box. Idea for next video, make a port adapter so you can externally very the port length to test tuning at a given volume.

Great test. I haven't inverted yet but from trying different enclosures and tuning I've found that as long as it'll get loud enough I prefer a smaller volume for wider range

4th order builds with magnets inverted in the larger common chamber helps keep the motor cooler.

great video man! just what I was looking for. I just bought some rockville k6 15s and my box is custom but for skar svr. Tuned low. Tried the rockville yesterday using this box and subs couldn't really hit the lows. I was wondering last night if inverting could help with the tuning. I'm going to invert later today and see if I can hear a difference in tuning.

ive heard in car audio its slightly less windy because inverted side has sightly less cone area moving air in cabin. but db wise its the same

As you increase power the tune will also shift upwards, would have been nice to see like 20 watts versus 400 , not sure on the power handling of those subs , nice work though

Maybe its the same sir. You know why the enverted is more low? Because the internal cu.ft. Before is lesser due to the sub displacement. The now you invert the sub so the displacement of the sub is in the outer of the box so, not counted. In my own opinion sir.

This is exactly correct. But many people dont know if the woofer displacement really changes that much. It definitely can.

Small boxes with big subs can probably help like a 6.5 that has a .4 displacement in a .5 cubic foot u may go 1hz lower not a lot but its something also I suggest u get a dats from dayton audio it would help a lot with finding tuning showing the frequency response and all taht

I have a zvx in a smaller than recommended box( in a 2.6 box, calls for 3) I inverted the sub to compensate for the box volume.. it sounds worse.. not as loud especially at lower volumes, and more mechanical noise. I’m thinking about just stacking a few 3/4” mdf spacers under the sub, and running it like that. Each one is .05 cubes.. so I wonder if that even matters?

Also, I have it on a 3k amp.. so maybe the smaller box might actually help in that aspect, I can safely put more power to it. I’m sure if I had a large aero port or something it might work out inverted, for me, it didn’t.

It's unlikely to make a difference. And youre likely experiencing 2 phenomenon. Larger volume and lower tuning. The 2nd of which is likely causing your destabilization

@@ATCA I think my port is too small, maybe it’s more noticeable inverted.. but I can assure you, it is Not louder.. the tuning may have shifted down somewhat, but not enough to justify running it in that configuration..

So I have 1 Skar ddx 12 inch fs 33 hz * recommended tuning is 38hz * recommended box space is 2.5 cubic ft I purchased the Skar 12 prefab box * tuned to 36 hz with 2.0 cubic ft air volume. Should I invert the subwoofer or mount Normal? My original plan was to invert to make more air space for the subwoofer.

Inverting will make it play lower. Try it both ways and tell me what you think sounds better

@@jamespal3186 to be completely honest I couldn't tell a difference. I only had it inverted for a few days. It kept rolling over because the magnet is so heavy. I have 2 ddx 12s in a Q bomb box with a Taramps 3k now. I think ddx could handle more power than the 3k is given them.

I think most of the time people tune there boxes to low, yes you get powerful low lows but higher bass is very weak. I have a monster 18" custom subs I built tuned below 30 and it hits like a mack truck playing bass boosted songs but higher bass hits the amp gets to clip fast. It kind of sucks unless I just want listen to re based music all the time, but it's a test box and I'm replacing it with 2 15s I just built. Even tho the 18 is capable of big wattage it yawns at my 5k but I'm going to use it for home theater, it will shake the house even on just 1000 watts in a super low tuned HT box. 1 18 can't compleat with 2 15s and for that matter 2 beefie 12s either well my 18 anyway. It could potentially move 4"+ P2P the mega roll and 12" spider are the limiting factor for excursion, the gap is 7.5" deep so bottoming out isn't a concern, I don't have enough power to do it but Maybe it could out do them in a box tuned for spl on a 10k+ amp but there's only so much cone area with one sub and my new 15s flex a ton too.

For your preferences, I would build an SPL box for a 15, and an enclosed box for a 10. Super clean highs with pounding lows

Why are there so many of these tests and discussions but everyone misses a big issue? Cone area is reduced when inverting the subwoofer. The back of the cone is missing the effective area of the voice coil diameter. A 12" sub with a 3" voicecoil has about 94% of the cone area when inverted. Might not seem like much but when people are looking for a tenth of a dB, it can add up.
