In my personal opinion DCAU Tim is a combination of three Comics Characters... 1 Tim Drake (In name only) 2 Post Crisis Jason Todd ( origin story) 3 Pre Crisis Jason Todd (personality and general demeanor) Its also possible that a Jason Todd exists, but never became Robin. After all Cassandra Cain makes a cameo in A Savage Time and Bruce Timm has implied that Tim's wife in ROTJ is meant to be Stephanie Brown.

I don't think he's Tim Drake "in name only." Tim of the DCAU has a very similar personality to the comicbook Tim Drake, he looks up to Batman and Robin and idolized them when he was growing up in the Lost Years comics and he built his foundation of right and wrong on his idea of them (even with a criminal for a dad) and he respected Bruce more than comicbook Jason did. Something that ComicTim also had with his origin (he was shown to have been the same way with regards to looking up to them). The only time DCAU Tim really behaved with defiance was when he was worried about Annie (a scared young girl whose scary criminal "dad" probably struck a chord with Tim whose own father was a criminal), which isn't akin to Jason Todd's usual behavior of being recklessly violent for the sake of it. I do think that the choice to have Tim's origin be an adaptation of Jason's was a stroke of genius though. Jason's origin works much better when you look at it. He has the tragic loss of a family member so he can be an orphan who Bruce can adopt; and with adapting the origin of Jason they were able to remove the unpleasant personality traits of Jason by making him a more likable and good-natured kid who already wanted to be like Batman and Robin like Tim Drake of the comics was.

I have a feeling that the black and red suit is probably Dick’s costume when he first got through training and maybe it got badly damaged so they made another one since dick was already growing out of that suit. Alfred later fixes this costume and Bruce puts it on display after Dick leaves, to remind him to never step over that line of cruelty again

One thing I kind of like the idea, but don't take it as anything but just a personal headcanon, is that the little orphan boy who was kidnapped by the Sewer King in "The Underdwellers" was the BTAS equivalent to Jason. I mean he never became Robin but he did get taken under Batman's wing for a very, very brief amount of time.

so in the JLU episode "the greatest story never told" green lantern asks MM how much money he made last year before taxes. Does he pay taxes? is he even a US citizen? or a citizen of any country for that matter? Maybe more importantly does he or any other member f the league get paid to fight crime? by who? many of the people who operate the tower seem to be employees so they must get paid and with all the time the superheros spend up there it must be hard to keep a regular job so that money has to come from somewhere. Does Bruce just fund it all? and if he does how does he pay the operators? he can't use a check without exposing his identity so he must pay cash right? unless it's funded by the government, but which government? If so how are they allowed to operate by themselves? do they take donations?

Thank you for the video! I already knew the answer to this question that he did not since the DCAU Tim Drake was an amalgamation of comicbook Jason Todd and Tim Drake, but I'm surprised that a number of people believe he could be put into the DCAU! The DCAU has one of the smallest Bat families. The only members were Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, Leslie Thompkins, and later in the future Ace the dog as well as Terry McGinnis. There were other vigilantes in Gotham City like the Creeper, but they weren't part of the Bat family. Heck, we had more Batwomen in this continuity than Robins! That's really not something you can say too often when it comes to other continuities. It makes me wonder why do fans try to shove characters into the DCAU from the comics who really couldn't work into that world? Sometimes it could be a case of legitimate confusion like in the case where Static Shock made references to the Teen Titans while the cartoon was still in production and caused years of fan confusion. Other times it seems like stubborn fan denial, desperate people who are fans of certain characters and don't want to acknowledge the possibility that the certain characters they want don't exist, willful ignorance, assuming that just because events and characters happened or existed in the comics, the same must happened in the adaptation; or just flat out not examining if the character could even work or make sense in the DCAU. What benefit would there be anyway of putting comic book Jason Todd in the DCAU? It would make DCAU Tim redundant since his backstory is largely borrowed from Jason's. Furthermore, it would derail Bruce's character immensely if Jason Todd existed in the DCAU, became Robin, died at the hands of The Joker, and was still willing to take on a young partner so easily. In Batman Beyond, Bruce did not let Terry just become Batman. Terry stole the suit making Bruce furious and resulting in him paralyzing the suit at one point while Terry was out in it. The only reason Terry was able to convince Bruce to let him do what he had to do was due to Terry suffering from a similar tragedy to Bruce and telling Bruce about it resulting in convincing him into training Terry to become the new Batman. The tale of the DCAU Tim Drake is this world's take on "A Death in the Family" story since it features a story where The Joker delivers a tragedy to a young Robin that "kills" him in a sense that also permanently alters the state of the Batfamily for the worst. This would make the story of Batman Beyond a spiritual adaptation of "A Lonely Place of Dying" and "The Dark Knight Returns" mixed with Spider-Man since it features a story in which a person convinces Bruce to take him on as an apprentice, a story set into a future world where Bruce comes out of retirement and back into action though not quite to the extent as he does in The Dark Knight Returns, and features the protagonist who also has to deal with High School issues, being an every man as well as being a superhero and how negatively your life can suffer for it.

@@Gsmooth84 Even without the Bat-embargo, I'm not so sure. From an in-universe perspective, Huntress' willingness to kill would have put her on thin ice with the Bat family. Although this could have been improved since Huntress in the show did change her ways. Also, having Huntress getting involved with the Bat family sounds more like a story that would have been better told during the days of BTAS or TNBA when you really only had one main hero to develop along with the other side characters. This sounds like a story that's too Batman centered for a Justice League show. Justice League and Justice League Unlimited are team shows in which your focusing on multiple superheroes with multiple main characters that have their own superhero identities independent from each other. As well as Justice League handled Huntress' character, I'm just not seeing how it could be done without steering the show from being its own thing to dedicating time on a story that would have been better told in the past to make up for a missed opportunity. Plus, a story focusing on Huntress becoming part of the Bat family also has a good chance of cutting into her relationship with the Question which was quite well-received.

Jason Todd entered the DCAU by way of the Justice Lords. In that universe, even the Justice Lords didn't approve of his methods. After being killed by the Joker he was resurrected in the Lazerous Pit. During his recovery which took a few years, Jason was cared for by Talia and they fell in love. But Ra's didn't approve of the union, and forcibly prevented them from being together. But Jason's previous aggression was only amplified after his resurrection. In a fit of madness, he lashed out at Ra's and killed him in front of Talia. Jason was hallucinating during the assault and 'pictured' Batman and Joker as Ra's. Talia saw the madness in his eyes and recoiled with fear, then she became angry at herself for falling for a 'beast'. A boy who wore a 'mask' of innocence. She placated her fear and began to fight Jason in an attempt to avenge her father and end her shame. Jason had but a moment to clear his head. When he looked down, he saw his hands were covered in blood. He then saw the body of Ra's al Ghul on the floor. But before he could plead for forgiveness Talia, was upon him, sword in hand. His Instincts took over and although Talia was a trained warrior and assassin she could not overcome Jason's training and madness. He defeated her by reversing a sword thrust and plunging Talia's sword into her abdomen. Some minutes later, Jason came to his senses. He realized immediately what he had done. Talia was on her back, clutching her stomach, with the sword covered in blood, by her side. As she lay dying at his feet, Jason tried to tell her he was sorry. She smiled, and reached to his cheek and said, "I'm not sorry....now OUR child...will never know their father is a monster!" With that, she was gone. Jason at first didn't understand but he soon realized Talia was carrying their child when he killed her. He looked in the pool of blood surrounding Talia's body with discussed. Then he saw his reflection in the blood and didn't recognize himself. It appeared as if he had a bloody hood, crimson cowl, a red mask covering his face. Soon Jason Todd in an attempt to 'honor' Ra's and Talia's legacy began his mission to destroy, not curtail crime. His methods at first proved to be very productive and final. But it was his attempt to take out a particular presidential candidate a very "ancient man" that made him a prime target of the Justice Lords, who at that time hadn't lost the Flash. After being given an ultimatum, he toned down his crusade and went into semi-retirement. That was until the Lords left their dimension and venture out. This gave him pause. With their departure, he saw an opportunity to reassert his form of justice, unhindered in their world. But he realized that any one of the Justice Lords singlehandedly could defeat him if one should return. So he found a way to enter the prime DCAU, undetected only to reconnoiter that world at first. But when the Lords were defeated, he became trapped in the prime DCAU timeline. Since then he has slowly established his own syndicate and begun undermining the major criminal organizations within that timeline...But in our reality, his inspiration became your inspiration and you inspire us. I think he would be proud of you, peace.

in my opinion Jason does exist in the dcau, but the reason why Jason does not appear is because Jason's story was very dark for a children's series, also in the episode: "sins of the father" before Tim drake turns into Robin, appears a suit of Robin (possibly the suit of Jason) that gives to understand that this suit belonged to Jason at some time, in addition that suit of robin is different from the suit of Dick as Robin. I also think that in this universe Jason only used the identity of robin, possibly Jason after dying he never resurrected and never became a red hood.

Watchtower Database Does that add anything to the debate regarding the red and black Robin costume being referred to as the “real Robin costume” (as coined by Tim himself in TNBA) in your mind?

Kind of. That suit is only seen in a dream of Barbara’s (spoilers, I guess), we never see it in the Batcave in “real life.” So who knows?

Watchtower Database Good point about the fact that is a dream sequence, but if anyone besides Bruce would know the location of (or had seen) the case with Dick’s BTAS costume in the Batcave I think Barbara would be a safe bet because she’s spent more time there, whereas Tim was seeing the cave for the first time. Additionally, in that “dream” Batcave, everything is where it’s supposed to be (i.e. trophies, vehicles, Batcomputer) so if her subconscious is that accurately detailed, to me I think it’s safe to say that the case with Dick’s BTAS Robin costume might exist in reality. That’s just my opinion though. Aside from the cave and manor, every other aspect of her surroundings in the “dream” world are 100% accurately portrayed; Nothing is out of place. On a side note regarding changes to costumes, how do you think Barbara got her TNBA black and yellow costume? I guess it was created by her as an improvement over her BTAS-era costume?

It's a shame that Jason Todd & his story weren't fully adapted into the DCU; if it was we could've experienced Mark Hamill's Joker serve as a representative for Iran, which would honestly be utter perfection. On a more serious note though, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your mentor. The concept of death is absolutely terrifying on it's own, but it's even worse if it happened & you don't know until months later; all that time spent under the illusion that everything's okay...it's just surreal to me. All you can really do is move forward as best as possible whilst still celebrating their memory.
