Scoring a goal is never a "no-no". In the rule book of hockey cross-checking to the face is an actual "no-no". Nowhere in the official rule book of hockey does it say "do not slap pucks into empty nets". Rielly deserves the punishment & more. Slapshots in empty nets only hurt fragile egos.. mature players won't get phased by it. However cross checks can end a guys career

At the end of the day that slap shot didn’t injure anyone. A response should have been in his face and drop the gloves. The cross check was a purely emotional response and never should have happened? He deserves what he gets and justifying it is wrong too

All three of you, please shut your mouths. It's hockey, it's the heat of the moment. Not a leaf fan, & yes leafs sing a lot of the blues, & yes a stick across the head does warrant a suspension. But if you break an unwritten rule, don't expect a Valentines card. Hockey with these already soft media outlets make game softer. Back in the day when players policed their own games, there were fewer stick infractions & cheap shots taken. Then the soft media claims hockey was too violent. The rest is history...

I still don’t understand why everyone is debating over this. A hockey stick is a weapon especially if it’s used to severely hurt another player. So would it have been justified if greig was paralyzed? Does it matter that he took a slap shot near the net or from centre ice? If you have a problem with it drop your gloves and make a statement. So let’s look at the latest trend in goal scoring by Jack Hughes. Shoot the puck at approximately 80 miles per hour at the goalie’s head so the puck deflects off the goalie’s head and into the net. Or as media describe the shot “Banks Off Goalie from Sharp Angle”. It has been described as precision skill. But it’s a “shot to the head” intentionally. It’s OK by NHL standards to shoot a puck at a goalie’s head to score but Morgan Reilly gets 5 games for a 2 mile an hour cross check to a player’s “helmet” for what should have been an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by Ridly Greig.

He wasn't exactly standing up for his team. A guy taking a slap shot on an empty net had NO EFFECT on any of the Leafs players. The only effect it had is the leafs are so soft that it hurt their pride, when they were gonna lose the game to one of the worst teams in the league anyways. If that guy did something to one of the Leafs players, then you'd have ground to stand on. But he didn't do anything to a single Leaf player.

If I was shown this clip without any knowledge of hockey, I would think Rielly was standing up for his _net_ . Because on that initial play, only the net got "hurt" with that slap-shot. Oh, and the egos of the players, too, I guess. That makes the cross-check to the head okay now, right? Sending a "message" some unwritten code was violated? This has _nothing_ to do with Leafs players being able or not able to "stand up" for their team. You know if the skate was on the other foot, you'd be howling for Greig's suspension.
