I think a timing video would be very interesting but I would also very much like to know how these kittens is performed on a ryzen base CPU... If my memory serves me correct timing clock speed is more important for the infinity fabric on ryzen bases to cpu's then overall clock speed is.basically how do I get the best bang for my buck out of ryzen. Currently using a 1700 but lookin to maybe upgrade.

High speed is better. I've personally tested it, using mostly cpu heavy titles like Total war. 2666Mhz with CL14-15-15 and 3200Mhz with CL16-17-17 and the faster speed always produces better results. Infact on the stock 3200MHz timings which were CL-18-18-18 the results where pretty much the same if only very very slightly worse than the tighter ones!

true latency on low speed and tight timings vs high speed and loose timings can be exactly the same, depends on the numbers you use. Way more important are the subtimings, where you can get a lot more out of your RAM. The important numbers for RAM are bandwith (read,write and copy) and the true (whole) latency that a RAM needs to do a whole Operation.

@HolloVVpoint

Brandon Gunn yeah it was faster even with CL-18 genius. Speed > Timings I've tested it my self. It's not hard do and anyone can do it with out even overclocking their RAM. Just buy a faster stick go to bios run it at stock speeds not the XMP profile, compare to the previous lower speed sticks. Use CPU heavy games and you will notice the difference. No doubt lower latency is better, 3200Mhz Ram with CL11 like Jay is talking about would be insane especially if you use Ryzen cpus which benefit even more from the faster ram. But in a scenario where you have pick between slower speed and tighter timings or higher speed and looser timings, the higher frequency is usually better.

LTT has video on "watch this before buying an AMD cpu". tho this only focuses on ryzen platform and not intel. They focused more on the infinity fabric than the timings tho there is a bit of that too. or GN's video "AMD Ryzen 3000 Memory Benchmark & Common RAM Mistakes (fClock, uClock, & mClock)". you could draw conclusion from there that optimized timings can affect performance more than just speed

Speed and Timing are more or less the same result to higher bandwidth and total latency. There's some slight differences regarding higher cycle demands against larger data size but they're mostly interchangeable stats. Technically faster timing resulting in the same bandwidth as higher speed but lower timing would be ideal in majority of situations, esp gaming. Should note though that pound for pound speed usually wins since timing differences are minimal by comparison to speed increases when comparing RAM sticks. In the comparison Salem Giath posted 3600 CL18 Vs 3200 CL16 the true latency is exactly the same at 10ns. By comparison I'm running 3200 CL14 which is 8.75ns If you get some beastly 4000 and trim it down to CL14 then you'd have 7ns.

@FinnishArmy
@FinnishArmy 4 жыл бұрын
Pastry Bear There really is no inherit risk. All PC components will auto shut off if they aren’t capable of doing an overclock. GPU will crash and shut off the driver, forcing a restart which resets the overclock, CPU will either just not boot and force you too pull back or auto shut off due to overheating, and RAM will either not boot or give you a blue screen. There is no risks these days, unless you put 5 volts into your CPU.

@@rty44551 the only 5000 RAM i can find is DDR5 right now 5000 and 5200 MHz DDR5 RAM. Right now for anything to use DDR5 you have to custom make the board and order the chip to not have a on board RAM controller so you can put the DDR5 RAM controller on to use DDR5. The improvement from DDR3-800 to DDR4-2133 to DDR5-5000 is only a few parts of a second in video recording. It wasn't used for anything but for video recording single board computer. DDR5 is also still super expensive so even the 2GB on board RAM cost 100 USD. Maybe i got ripped off for that price as i only bought 1 chip and they are sold in lots of hundreds not 1 at a time ... yet.

definetly, i've mostly ignored it over the years but recently dabbled with my temp ram (cause good stuff was sold out due to zen 2) and my final ram which was a miss buy (20 bucks more would have gotten me samsung b-die instead of hynix M-die) and on my temp ram which turned out to be micron e-die based it was quite succesfull, didn't push it hard but was able to tighten timings a bit (not knowing what i'm doing but following what ryzen dram calculator tossed out). but this hynix m-die is a pain, i've not even been able to set it up to try and lower timings, anything i manually set on it requires a cmos clearing or even flashing a old bios over the new bios and then re-flashing the new bios over the old one to get my pc working again >< granted it's higher speed and tighter timings then my temp ram was able but if there's more in there i'd like to figure out how to get it out of there :P

They literally didnt do the OC on it to 3200. So they ship a product that isn't what it is advertised to do. Kinda strange for them not to inform you of that before hand or just do it themselfs. Luckily I know a thing or two about PC's so I just set it manually.

I'd love to see Timing vs Clock speed. Typically ram timings can be made faster if you decrease the clock speeds. I'd be interested in like: cas 15 @ 2800 vs cas 18 @ 3200, etc etc. Like what gives better gaming performance, is raw speed better or faster timings, and is there a sweet spot. I imagine that most of these ram manufacturers have tested this out and this is why cas 16 @ 3200 seems to be were a lot of them are putting their eggs currently. I remember as a late teen when ddr first launched in the athlon xp era, I was somewhat intrigued by ram timings and went with this new company called corsair(:P) and their cas 2 ddr.. and In synthetics it was way above everything I'd seen to that point. I guess ram timings are still an interest of mine and how timing/clock speed effects performance.

@yumri4
@yumri4 4 жыл бұрын
For speed that really only matter after you have enough system RAM. After you have enough system RAM then yes speed matters but having enough is almost always not an issue for almost every consumer user now-a-days. So yes for most people speed than CAS than amount is the order they look instead of amount then speed then CAS . For the users that it is an issue they will know due to an error message telling them but most error messages for not having enough system RAM are no longer a thing outside of live recording. As that one will tell you while the others will not.

@@soinelle85, unfortunately XMP only allows the RAM vendor to specify primary timings. So if your XMP profile fails, it is likely because your motherboard is doing a poor job of running through alternative potentially stable sub timings. You can probably run at XMP, but you'll need to dig into the sub timings and find which ones are causing your issue and loosen them.
@illyont
@illyont 4 жыл бұрын
@soinelle85, I would boot with 2133 and check what sub timings your motherboard have set. Then try setting those manually alongside the 2400MHz frequency. See if you are able to boot. The added frequency would of course make the timings a tiny bit faster than they used to be at the slower 2133, but you might be fine anyway. It could simply be a QVL issue with your exact motherboard. Updating your BIOS could also be worth a try, if you aren't already running the most recent version.

Depends on the generation. Zen and Zen+ love memory speed because the cores talk to each other at the clock the memory runs at. In Zen2 that's not the case, but that gen likes the memory to run at the same clock the fabric runs at, or you incur some latencies. On Zen2, the larger caches also help it bne less memory-dependant, like intel is. Best bang-for-the-buck and also compatibility is: Zen 1st gen - 3000MHz; Ryzen 2xxx - 3200MHz; current 3xxx - 3600MHz. Because Zen loves memory speeds but also often can't handle cheap memory at really high speeds. That said, you can always buy 3200 CL14 and run it at 3000 CL12-13 or 3600 CL16-17. RAM is like an unlocked CPU.

With Zen 2 you need to use Ryzen DRAM calculator and manually tune your timings as low as possible. It has huge effects on Zen 2. The best frequency would be the highest that the infinity fabric will run, usually 3800mhz, but anything from 3200 above is great. Timings are actually more important on many titles. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYDUmayMg7Wbl68

Basically like this... The faster the response time is from Ram the faster your Cpu and Gpu receive it and the faster they can send that data back out. So the tighter the timings (The lower the Cas latency) "the responsiveness" the amount of nanoseconds its takes to read and write data in and out of ram. the higher the frequency (2133mhz -> 4133mhz) the amount of Data. example: 30 gb/s ~ 50 gb/s The better the overall system performance is, because your cpu and gpu need to wait less time (in nanoseconds) to get the data in. Key being here.. Response time, Jay did the opposite of that.. and only increased the Mhz (frequency) so the data rate but didn't adjust the timings thus the FSB:Dram ratio shifts thus the Latency increases thus in turn slows the reading and writing of data process and that means barely to no difference unless a game engine is designed upon that like Jayz showed in this video. in other words, jay made a video about frequency of the ram if it increases system performances. without adjusting the timings of the ram. which the answer is Barely to none. While if he made a video about Ram timings the answer would be Yes.

I think how memory differs from other components is that other than latency sensitive tasks, like gaming, you don't usually get benefits by going up in speed because most applications don't need a lot of bandwidth so you can never tell just by using photoshop for example, the gains you've made by speeding up your memory.
