First, thank you for this information (and all the videos). Now the question... :) Does my military service "buy-back" count toward the 10 years of creditable federal service (and the total years calculation)?

My dear friend got Covid at his retirement party. Died two weeks later. Never spent one day retired. I’m glad his wife was not forgotten. Thank you so much!

Great information on what part of the pension they would be eligible for. But what about FEHB coverage? That is almost more important to me than the pension. Would the spouse be eligible for FEHB coverage if I die before I retire?

I believe so if their on your health benefits at the time of passing

I had the same thought. Even if the pension mostly went towards covering the FEHB premium, it would be a huge benefit.

Thank you so much for this information. Could clarify what do mean that the surviving spouse must have at least 18 months of "civic service" in order to qualify for this benefit? Again, thank you.

What if the surviving spouse is 45 years of age? Do they have to wait for a certain age to receive it? Also, what if they’ve only been married a couple months(below the 18 month threshold for the life insurance payout of 50% + $32K)? Thank you.

Would the surviving spouse be eligible FEHB?

I believe you are misunderstanding. This video is about FERS pension not the FEGLI life insurance.

My wife and I are both AF civil servants and will retire together around Jan 2026. We will both be over 20 years FERS time in service at that point and past 62 years old. Do you believe it better for each of us to take survivor benefits or not take survivor benefits?

Just curious which federal statute or program provides the 50% of salary lump sum plus $32k. Would it be Section §8133 of the Federal Employees' Compensation Act regarding Compensation in case of death? TIA.

Can you address the following note from the TSP site regarding non-spouse beneficiaries, and how long will they have to take the money out of TSP?: "Note: If a beneficiary participant dies, the new beneficiary(ies) cannot continue to maintain the account in the TSP. Also, the death benefit payment cannot be rolled over into any type of IRA or plan."

What if the deceased fed employee was eligible for the supplement at the time? Is that included in the calculation? Also you mentioned TSP but didn't specifically included that as money that would go to the spouse or beneficiaries but that would be distributed without any loss right? Finally, what funds would come from the money paid into social security? How would the death impact the survivor's options there.

Am I misunderstanding this video? I was under the belief that current FERS employee life insurance (FEGLI) was your annual salary rounded up to the nearest $1000 plus $2000. Ie. $64,323 rounded up,to $65,000 plus $2,000 for a life insurance of $67,000. Please refer to OPM website.
