You know......I just set up (well TRIED to set up) a home studio. Bought alllllllllll the wrong stuff. Wrong chord, wrong headphones, wrong wrong wrong. So I gave up for a week and googled if my chord is why my mic doesn't work cause it requires phantom power. Couldn't find the answer. Today I decided to research it AGAIN on KZbin and ran across your video. THANK YOU! I just ordered the correct chord. This is tough. I still can't get my audio interface to work but I'm not gonna give up. I'll check out more of your videos. This really helps cause some of us don't know how to use this new stuff. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I appreciate it!

Thank you so much for answering such a simple question, all the manuals I have looked through never explain this.

Thank you! Took me forever to get this answered. I suppose I could use a voltmeter on the cable output to verify as well…

@Kettner Creative, does this mean I can connect my guitar pedal into the 1/4" input without worrying about phantom power (turned on for my mic) killing it?

Super smart design cuz you can plug in a guitar with your 1/4th jack and still use the phantom power when you have a condenser mic on xlr. Just have to get the right cords.

What will happen if I have device on XLR that doesn't need Phantom? Like cab sim for guitar amp that is powered by its own power supply.

I got this adapter and with lgv30 I've been able to use basically any of my microphones without phantom power but I figure it must be getting phantom power from somewhere maybe that's why it's called phantom power a might be the quad DAC

DUDE! What about an XLR to 1/4 adapter? If using one of these, would it pass phantom power to the mic? Give this video an update.

I'm purchasing a mic preamp and plan to run a 1/4" to XLR male cable to my audio interface. Would phantom power work with a 1/4 to XLR cable?
@kettnercreative
@kettnercreative 3 жыл бұрын
If you're using a mic preamp. Stay with 1/4" cables. The mic preamp sends a LINE LEVEL signal, which needs to go to the 1/4" input of your interface. Phantom power will come from your mic preamp to your microphone, you don't need phantom power from your interface to your mic preamp. Mic > XLR Cable > Mic Preamp (with 48v turned on) > 1/4" Balanced Cable > Interface > USB > Computer

What about xlr to 1/4” trs patch bay I see this all the time I can’t imagine every mic being used through the bay is dynamic not needing 48 bits of juice Also read that phantom power is acceptable through patch bays as long as connections are made prior to engaging send power Perhaps the circuitry of that mixer doesn’t handle it?

I don't know of any 1/4" devices that can carry phantom power. Most 1/4" to XLR patch bays are used for connecting wireless equipment or outboard gear (EQ, Compressor, FX, etc.). I've never seen a microphone connected to a 1/4" to XLR patch bay.

but if we do it the other way around (XLR to the 1/4" cable instead), would that be able to power an acoustic-electric pickup?

Great vid thanks, I've recently set up a condenser mic to an external phantom power unit, then from that into boss br 600 which will only take Jack. I get a verrry low signal from the mic, is this the reason why, if so can I fix it?

Hi, good review ! I would like to ask, I have a ribbon microphone and also a condensor mic required phantom power. I want to use both at the same time. If I use the ribbon with the TRS cable like in this video, is it safe for a long term ? Thank you !

My Behringer umc404hd audio interface turns on condenser microphone while phantom power is switched off. Why is that?
@kettnercreative
@kettnercreative 2 жыл бұрын
No idea. I don't have a lot of faith in Behringer products, so my guess would be that the button is broken and Phantom Power is stuck on.

So... Have I been doing it wrong ? I have an expensive keyboard does it need phantom power too? Is that why my recording of piano kinda static? I should get a 1/4 to xlr? Thanks
@kettnercreative
@kettnercreative 4 жыл бұрын
No, only condenser microphones require phantom power. There would be zero benefit for providing your keyboard with phantom power, it gets everything that it needs from it’s own power supply. 1/4” cable will work well for you.

Thank you for your video. I have a question though. Is the phantom power applied across the other XLR's on the board? I have turntables plugged to it and I want to use them at the same time I use the mic for my podcast but I fear that the extra juice would damage them. Alternatively I have an independent phantom power unit and I was wondering if I can connect it to my Mackie... That way the Phantom Power of the board is off.

The 48v is generally applied to all XLR inputs on a small console like this. I would use the line level inputs for your DJ mixer and then you don't have to worry about it.

Will the 48V damage keyboards or synths connected with a 1/4 balanced cable? Please answer.
@kettnercreative

48v doesn't come out through the 1/4" jack. So it will not damage your keyboard.
@chrish7336

@@kettnercreative Real question is. If a monster cable is used and 1/4 is not available, the keyboard will have to run on the XLR line with Phantom Power. In this case an adapter cable would have to be used which would allow the 48v Phantom power to be applied to the keyboard via 1/4" cable. What do you then recommend to protect the Keyboard when turning Phantom power off is not an option.

If I have a patchbay with 1/4" plugs, can I plug in a mic using a female XLR (from Mic) to 1/4" cable (into patchbay) if I want to patch different preamps? Will the 48v damage the 1/4" connection (or makes connection at all) or does it have to be XLR? Can this be accomplished without purchasing an XLR patchbay?

An XLR to TRS (not TS) cable can pass phantom power. We have a wall outlet at our church that all the XLR jacks around the room come back to. The outlets are all 1/4" TRS. I guess this was done for space or cost. We use 1/4" TRS to XLR cables to go from the wall panel to the mixer. So as long as you're careful or never unplug them when sending phantom power you should be fine. It seems however that companies do not recommend it. Here is the same question from a patch panel user manual: Can I run phantom power for microphones through the (patch bay) A: While you can do this, we don't recommend it. For one thing, it would be very easy to inadvertently connect the 48V directly to an input or output that couldn't handle it, damaging your equipment. For another thing, and this is a problem whenever you use a phone plug with phantom power, as you plug into the jack you'll almost certainly momentarily short the 48V to ground, potentially damaging the phantom supply. It would be much better to use one of our XLR patch bays... With an XLR connector, it's almost impossible to accidentally short the phantom voltage to ground.
