If this happened to an AMD card it would get so much shit. Meanwhile Nvidia is always misleading consumers and no one gives a damn.

AMD is no different, they are companies, and are bound to bend the truth in some way. Just like how AMD promises that their new cards are going to be great VR performers, but what about gaming in a traditional sense? These are the tricks of the trade, and no here said anything about giving Nvidia a free pass.

This is almost entirely to do with the rear exhaust cooler and the fan curve being stopped at 55% from the factory. As soon as he allowed the fan to actually do some work and set it to 80%, temps dropped to 77C. So it's perfectly reasonable to expect one of the aftermarket cards with a proper cooler on it to be able to hold mid 60C numbers without much issue, as long as you run a custom fan curve that bypasses the silly 'silent' mode they all ship with.

The nvidia demo lined like they had vsync on, the fps stayed around 60 pretty much dead on, so the card want being pushed, hence the lower temperature. I'm amazed none of the techs who were there (that I've watched so far) have even mentioned or debunked that, but it seems such an obvious reason why the temperature was so low, I don't know why it is baffling you tech guys so much... I could be wrong, but nobody has said anything to disprove that theory that I've seen. Apologies if somebody has and I've not seen it.

Sure he will do a water cooled test soon enough he just got his for the 1080. Keep in mind as he said this new chip is small and the energy is so concentrated might still not OC much more even on water. Water does not cool the chip it just removes the heat has from the chip compared to air.

Still will run at a cooler temp. Higher overclocks, but a much slower rate of heat transfer. I wonder what a 1080 could do if it was adequately cooled without a gimped vrm section.

@Latiosx1238 жыл бұрын
alright, dumb question i get it now.. the fan curve is responsible for it

The factory fan curve wasnt really letting the fan go past about 55%. Its too low which is why its throttling.

thanks for the reply, keep up the good videos
@griffn18 жыл бұрын
Is there a reason why from the factory at base settings the card throttles at around 82 degrees yet fan speed is only at 54%??? You would think that if the card was approaching temp limit and was going to start throttling, the default fan profile would go to 100%.
@Jayztwocents8 жыл бұрын
They chose to air on the side of noise performance rather than thermal performance for whatever reason. I agree the fans should have ramped higher on their own. Thats the issue with early testing though, fan profiles werent available to us at the time of testing.
@griffn18 жыл бұрын
+JayzTwoCents it is just interesting to me that (for a graphics card that focused primarily towards gaming) they would choose to limit the performance capability to reduce noise as the default. keeping the card performing at its best should be default, with noise reduction being addressed in profiles.

There is truth to this. I have a 1080 Classified, and at stock settings (all I did was switch to the LN2 BIOS), it sits put at 1987MHz in the low 60s to mid 60s C. It's scary to think that, between the Titan X's default at 50% and the 1080 throttling unless power target and temp threshold are raised up, these cards will thermal control (Titan X) or throttle (1080) as much as they do. I get that nvidia wants a share of the GPU market to itself with its own "it's not reference!" designs, but perhaps they've found the limit of that cooler's design, and should let 3rd party makers such as EVGA, ASUS, etc., do the cooling designs. Getting an extra 190MHz because of a combination of "out of the box OC," better board design, better power delivery, and much better cooling capabilities, even compared to a "liberated 1080" is nothing to sneeze at. I would love to see Jay do a battle of the 1080s. Take a normal 1080 and a completely non-ref but still air-cooled 1080, and without voltmodding or overvolting, see how far each one can go. Can any 1080 actually crack 2100? (PS: I'm getting that 1987MHz in an Obsidian 350D, so I don't even have the advantage of an open test bed)

They have standard GDDR5 RAM, like the 1070. The 480 is as fast as an R9 390, but 1/2 the size and only needs 1/3rd the power. It is also around 25% faster under DX12 than the 970 and around 20% faster than the 390 under DX12. The 480 is also around £160-£170, compared to £240 (R9 390) and £260 (GTX970). The 480X is around as fast as a Fury / 980, but again it is smaller, needs less power and costs around 50% less than the GTX980. It will also be much faster than the 980 under DX12, and a little faster than the Fury under DX12. Basically ...... 1 GTX1080 = £620 2 x R9 480X = £480 Same performance ... only the 480X Crossfire will be a fair bit faster under DX12. June 29th 2016.

It wasn't a mistake, it was exactly what they wanted people to see. They didn't lie, but it was no accident that people interpreted the information they saw in the way they did. And what do you mean, "they didn't mean to lie to us", why does it matter if they meant to do it or not, Nvidia does everything for a reason and it was exactly what they wanted people to see.

@baneblackguard5848 жыл бұрын
that's why you adjust fan speed settings, build pc's with good airflow cases, and monitor heat. and they don't cook themselves, that's why they throttle.

Hey JayzTwoCents, why did you delete coreteks's comments? Why are your reviews so shallow? And why the Nvidia bias? I get that Nvidia has made sense for the past 2-3 years in the $500+ market but why is that you never seem to show AMD some real love in the markets they compete in?

Did you see this? kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWrGfI2ff9xphs0

I sure did, it was the most popular argument for AMD's 300 series. But what about coreteks's comments? Did you or did you not delete his comments?
@Jayztwocents8 жыл бұрын
It's pretty obvious that I did. Since he wants to be antagonistic, he got what he wanted. Besides it gave plenty of fuel for his Imgur post, but unfortunately hes feeling the wrath of reddit as most people seem to be tearing him apart. Im moving on, its time he does the same.
@6969blair8 жыл бұрын
Wrath of reddit? I read the comments, they reemed both of you. He was totally out of bounds himself but you as a professional were also more if not more childish about the whole situation. I understand people have bad days from time to time but people still need to own those bad days and make up for them. No one will fault you for manning up and saying you were out of line, we are all human after all.

funny how when amd's r9 290 reference card's where hot [92c] and loud all the tech reviewers gave it tons of shit for being so hot but when nvidia does this its really not that big of a deal just kind of weird

Jay in this video is not biased or anything, it's just a review based on his observation with the card, chill guys. And yes he made it clear that the card will throttle, and he clearly showed us a live gpu reading in-game, results speak for itself.

Nvidia's base fan profiles are stupid. I don't care if my GPU is a bit loud as long my temps are good and it's not burning a hole in the chip. Thank God for after market tuning software.

High fans speeds such as 80% - 100% are ridiculous. Even when wearing headphones, the noise will be obnoxiously disturbing. The noise will basically sound like a vaccuum cleaner then.
@MakoRuu8 жыл бұрын
It really doesn't. I've been on a gaming PC that had a 980 ti at 100% fan speed. (EVGA's 980 ti SSC) And you could barely hear it over the speakers we had. Which were just Creative T10's at the time.

well my r9 380 hits 52% fan speed max with a temp of around 64 degrees c

well after market cooler is way silent, but 80~100% on a reference cooler does sound like a vacuum cleaner

It won't fucking break them. lol They're made to last for years. You don't have to baby a graphics card. I've put mine through the ringer. And it's performed beautifully. Although on my workstation board, it doesn't like being overclocked. Anyways, the point is, set up a custom fan profile and you'll be fine. Just like Jay did in this video.

@gamingmarcus8 жыл бұрын
Depends on your definition of "mainstream" If you mean 380 and 390 you are far from right.
mrmagicBOBdude It performed very similar, with higher TDP, less potential for overclocking and much worse drivers. And about their new generation: we will see how it turns out. I won't care until I see a reasonable comparison between the two.

Good video +JayzTwoCents. Would you consider doing another one looking at what happens when you overclock and keep the power target at 120%? Because a lot of people were saying that eventually the card power throttles after 5 minutes or more, too, but in your video it didn't seem to get close to 120%. That'll make a big difference for consumers because if it does power throttle we're going to want to avoid any design that only has one power-pin - and there I'm assuming that third parties will rework power delivery and add an extra one?

I've always ran 125% power target & 92c temp target on my reference 980, and a custom fan curve always helps. I don't mind the noise of 100% fan speed on the Reference Card XD
