Remakes are always a tricky proposition. Some of the greats, both in the horror genre and elsewhere, are actually remakes, whether they are loose ones or not. 1999 happens to be one of the most packed years for movies ever, but how does The Haunting, one of the biggest releases of that year, hold up? Does it carry the torch or justified remakes, or does it fail to stand the Test of Time?

I can recognize its flaws but still thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere and setting. The sets of the house are so BEAUTIFUL! How each of the rooms are extravagantly decorated. The wooden carvings of the children. The door to the gate of purgatory. The spinning ballroom. The fireplace. I would absolutely LOVE for there to be an actual building designed to the T of the sets and marketed as a bed and breakfast. What an absolutely stunning place for a wedding or reservation party of sorts.

The ghost effects never really age past the opening day, but the set looks creepy and gorgeous. It's still the third best Scooby-Doo live action movie.

I absolutely adore this movie. We don't deserve movies with such gorgeous scenery and set production, it is a feast for the senses, who cares about the the few CGI scenes, that's all people can harp on.

This movie isn't as iconic as the 60's original, but it's still enjoyable, thanks to decent performances, especially from Catherine Zeta Jones.

My memories of this movie are kind of blurry. I hit the bar with buddies beforehand. I kept getting distracted by Owen Wilson's nose. I fell asleep at one point but woke up to hearing the audience booing the ending.

The teaser trailer for The Haunting is scarier , more atmospheric and entertaining than the movie . " There once was a house..." Leaving Owen Wilson out of the movie would have improved it also .

The main character actress doesnt sell this movie for me. She has the face for drama, not horror, she just doesnt look convincingly scared at all, not back when it came out and not in recent reviewing. I'll use Drew Barrymore in the opener for Scream, she sells it, her character Casey looks genuinely scared, terrified, and the tension builds and builds. Compare it to this movie, it just misses the mark, if I cant buy into the characters being scared, then I'm not going to be scared. The House on Haunted Hill remake did scare me, the cast pulled it off in selling their fears.

The best part of the Flanagan’s version was the hidden ghosts. People just repeat what other critics have said. This version was decent, but terrible CG. And the 60’s Robert Wise one is strong. It could withstand one more reimagining.

I enjoyed this movie when it came out, but haven't bothered with it since. I probably wasn't bothered by the weak CG then because it was about as good (or bad) as anything else out at the time. I would give it 3/5 stars-- passably entertaining watch, but little-to-no rewatch value, unlikely to recommend to anyone. I also watched the '63 version, & was very unmoved by it. My father had tried to make the same case for it, scary for the time, despite no real effects to speak of. To me, it's movie where a lot of non-things happen. Doors & doorknobs rattled, walls banged on, & not much else. If I was 6 years old, then yeah, I'd probably be scared 😑

This movie sucks. Big time, It is terrible. Awful. The original was a masterpiece of suspense, where you never really saw anything, but things were always bubbling just beneath the surface. If you can find it, watch the original. It is in black and white, and apparently, that is enough reason for some people to reject it out of hand. This is their loss.
