Matt, I have been using the Pelz Tutor years. It is my go to for working on start line. With putting, 85% of start line is face angle at impact. Set the device 5 feet from a hole, straight up the fall line, go through your whole routine and make 50 of them. You will reinforce your routine, what straight looks to you and the pressure of making 5 footers. I would highly recommend the Pelz Tutor to everybody.

Very honest review. The best putting aid I ever saw was a 1 mtr steel rule. The come with a 1/4 inch hole in one end so you can hang it on a nail. Lay the rule on the floor or ground and set the ball in the hole and try to putt the length of the rule without the ball falling off in its entire length.

Blast golf sensor (for tempo) + Wellputt mat (for backswing and follow through distance for a specific distance of putt) has been a huge winner in my book. Using both has really allowed me to dial distance in. Once you have that you can start trusting the read.

Always like these reviews. Keeping it honest and real is very important. One minor suggestion about try to putt into a glass. Just turn it over top side down and putt to it. It is much more stable and you don't need to keep adjusting it. Ditto for coffee mugs.

I bought this about three years ago when I was having alignment issues and missing a lot of short putts. This product has made me a much better putter of short putts and as Matt sez, just getting it going on the right line. You can do similar by using four tees, with the front two narrower...but this tool really gives you a good visual (it has a line down the center)....there's a zipper pocket so you won't lose your marbles (errr ball bearings).

This past year I used the Graves Golf H3 putting trainer along with Blast Golf digital monitor. The Graves Golf tool forced me to change my posture in the set up, eyes truly over the ball and ball position, more forward in the upstroke. I have definitely seen and measured an improvement in the stroke.
@johnbarber2175

I would have mentioned eye alignment as a thing in putting, Eye alignment is SO important and is either on or off sometimes. I usually take 15 seconds before I tee off to realign my eyes to a straight line, then I'm good to go for that day. I have used and owned this device but didn't use it at all last year! lol I putted great this season just by having better feels rather than technical details about my stroke. Reads and speed are entirely a different story and spend more time getting them right than worrying about my stroke when playing. Thanks Matt! .

How do you realign your eyes?
@johnbarber2175
@johnbarber2175 2 жыл бұрын
@@alanf403 Thanks for the question... simply take your normal stance with your putter aligned to a straight line (such as an alignment stick or putting green hole flag) representing the ball-target line. Set your putter aim-line to match the ball-target line (alignment stick or putting green hole flag). Looking down the line at a point on the ball-target line then move your eyes/head back to the putter aim-line until you sync them up. Only takes about 15 seconds or so for your brain to get it. I found using the small putting green hole flag works well, since you can slide your putter head under it at one end when it's on the ground. Hope this helps? Sorry, it's not easy to explain what I do.

Matt, thanks for the review, I picked one of these up at Kohl's on clearance for 9.99 (about all its worth) I was very interested in your opinion thinking that I might be missing something as I did not think it was anything great, They do give you extra "marbles" knowing that you're going to lose some though. I'll stick with my two tee putting gate. Thanks again for the awesome reviews !!

I often use another ball as the target to aim for if I'm not on a putting green. it's actually a smaller target than a hole, which probably helps. Could do 4-6 golf balls and spread them out a bit at different distances in a circle-ish area, then pick a ball to putt and hit another target ball, move on to another ball, rinse, repeat.

Good stuff, Matt. I don't doubt that someone could benefit from it, since its basically the gate drill that all the pros do. I use a puttout mat and puttout cup. You can see the ball rolling end over end if you hit the putt good and you can move the matt around to find slightly different breaking putts on your floor. The little puttout cup is great. Returns balls just far enough for you to reach forward with your putter and drag them back while giving you a game to see how many times you can get the ball to stick in the hole. The mat is good because of the lines, so it assists with understanding your natural arc/stroke and how that equates to starting the ball on line. I am a fan of any gizmo that just keeps you interested and doing reps. If you putt lots, you get better at putting. That Pelz thing looks crap to me eye. I sometimes use a metal hard rule which is about an inch wide. If I can hit the ball down that rule without it falling off the side, I know my stroke is good line wise. The rest of putting is down to pace. No substitute for just hitting putts. The more, the better.

Just FYI you need to take a slowmo video of the ball going though the gate from sideview because you'll notice that the ball is actually not rolling but jumping over the ball bearings. You really need to make sure your putt comes out rolling immediately. I am not sure this jumping effect is purely because of the stroke or loft of the putter or because the ball sits in the dimple. Bottom line it's misleading when you see it doesn't knock down the ball bearings because it jumped over the gate. At least that is what I found out. But I did have my putter delofted and then in slowmo video it looked it was actually rolling through the gate. Also making sure your ball comes rolling immediately helps pace.

The most frustrating or challenging thing about golf is that your feel changes day to day. For me if I break 90, it’s a good day, and on those rare days where I’ve shot in the low 80s, everything feels good. Most of us don’t get a chance to practice (or golf) as much as we would like, so when we do practice, I could see these little aids helping a bit. Tees are less expensive, though, and can serve the exact same purpose. Save your $$

Hi Matt, I’ve just returned to the game after 20+years skydiving starting out purely recreational which progressed to the professional level. Stay with me, there’s a basis for the aforementioned explanation. The fitter who fitted my putter told me I had a very nice and smooth stroke starting on line and so forth. The only putting practice aid I use is a mirror to hone-in my setup. My misses are more often short than anything. Is this a case of confidence/hesitation which I should focus on my stroke to correct? Or, is this a textbook case of the YIPS? ( performance anxiety definition rather than neurological) When teaching and coaching skydiving, hesitating was never a problem as “he who hesitates shall inherit the earth”.

Alan F, I had that problem for many years as a scratch player...left so many putts short but perfectly on line. I'm not sure how, but at some point I realized that when I visualized my putt while reading it, I never "saw" it go into the hole, I just saw the line it would need to roll on but didn't finish "the movie". When I started seeing it actually go into the hole and then visualized the last foot of the "movie" while stroking the putt the leaving it short problem has never bothered me since. Give it a try! I have never tried this training aid, but I don’t see how it can help your putting “stroke”. I believe the “putting arc” training device and “putting mirror” would actually work and train your stroke more than just trying to putt through a narrow gate. Maybe you should do a video on one of these two training aids! ⛳️
@HillbillyJedi88
@HillbillyJedi88 2 жыл бұрын
I've looked into buying this too. While the device has a lot of aids to help you, I think using some tees on a practice green can accomplish nearly the same thing. But in complete honesty, the majority of training aids make it sound like it will turn you into a tour pro with just 20 swings. (sound familiar?) 99% of golfers don't have the time, or commitment level, to dramatically change their game a lot. You have 2 choices as a golfer - 1. Hang with the boys, have fun, hit some good shots and drink a few beers or 2. Hit the range 3 days a week, practice 8 - 10 hours a week and really improve your game. Or maybe option 3 for me. Retire at 50 and go work at a golf course for extra money, free golf and free range whenever I want. (I like option 3!)

The pelz helps with square blade at impact AND a better SWINGPATH , if your swing path is not on then you will miss many puts through the gate so you saying it doesn’t help your putting stroke is wrong in my opinion. I do work as a pga pro so some knowledge of the mechanics . Well if you can get the ball rolling through the ballbearings at the tightest setting then it is not only helping with the face angle at impact but also with the swing path, i like to use it on 2-3m puts where the putter head stops square to target and centred on the target line and not passing the metal balls as then a visual head position can be noted.
@ChrisRumin
@ChrisRumin Жыл бұрын
Matt - this is my first time seeing your channel and I liked it but I think you missed the mark on this. This Pelz device isn’t about improving your stroke, it’s about improving your read - specifically your aim and hitting what you aim at. I have used this product for about 15 years (I still have my original that I paid about $20 for) and love it BUT as with most products you need to understand Pelz teaching and why you are applying this tool to that teaching. Pelz teaches that the number one fundamental in putting is aim and this device helps you aim and hit what you are aiming at. It also helps with getting your eyes aligned above the target line. Pelz is not for everyone and for any one of his products I really encourage knowing in depth why he developed that product and if it’s for you before you buy it. Start with the Pelz Putting Bible and Short Game Bible books before using his products. His books are far better than any of his products IMO but the products are good if you know what you’re looking to achieve. Pelz is not for quick fixes and he doesn’t make gimmick “quick fix” products. They take study and work but are worth it.

Easier to get a cheap 48" aluminum ruler from harbor freight for $5 and just roll putts from the punched hole off the other end. Achieves the same thing, actually has a higher level of difficulty (for better practice), and is 1/10th of the price.

5 -10’s and 5 -6’s is an average of 8. But I would argue that 10 -8’s are a better result, even though the average is the same. Avg to avg comparisons don’t tell the whole story.

I would respectfully disagree. The approach you propose is faulty. Here's why --- In the scenario you laid out ( 10 attempts of quality 8 ) would mean you missed all 10 putts -- for a minimum total score of 20 strokes. Assuming MrShortGame's idea of a 'perfect putt' is one that is holed, then 5 attempts of quality 10, means only 5 putts were required. A golfer would have to 3-putt every one of his remaining 5 attempts (of quality 6), just to EQUAL your best possible score of 20 . Highly unlikely for any golfer. I would not do it and neither should you. As we all know, Golf is based on strokes taken and scoring, and not about the best statistical proximity 'miss' . I hope I explained it clearly enough to see the faulty logic in your approach. Cheers.

No matter how good your stroke, if the face isn't aligned square to your line at impact correctly, you're not making that putt. Alignment: That's the fourth key to putting. Your self-rating system, well, sucks. How about measuring your misses? 1" left, 2" right, etc. Objective, not subjective. Finally, one session with any training aid is not going to make you better immediately. Try practicing with it for a week, then let us know how it works out for you.

This device has nothing to do with stroke mechanics, it just forces you to get the ball on line. May Force you to have bad mechanics in order to do that. If working on something specific these types of trainers (there are tons of them) are a good addition to your routine.

So this is just a fancy (expensive) way to make a gate. I just do this with tees and it works just fine.

It's an okay product that you really don't need, two tees on the practice green is actually much more valuable. Indoors a couple of shot glasses does the same thing, Merry Christmas everybody, I just saved you all $50!

I bought one of these a few years ago for about $20 i think ($50 is way too much) at a local sporting goods store. I enjoy your reviews, but you look like you went out of your way to show your disdain for the product. If you're trying to make sure you've got the face square at impact for various distances, it works well to show you if you're there or not. I don't know why the price is so high nowadays though, that's ridiculous.
