The Quran is often misunderstood and misinterpreted by some Muslims and Non-Muslim and many verses are misquoted. No matter what was done against you, if you forgive and leave those affairs to Allah (SWT), it is better for you and Allah (SWT) will reward you, don't worry! It is easy to hurt someone, but it is far better to love and follow the guidance of Allah (SWT) and all his Prophets (PBUT), and his last Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In the Quran, Allah (SWT) teaches love and not hate. The same goes for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teachings. Thank you Dr. Shabir Ally for your explanation filled with wisdom.

@A N In this verse Jesus pronounces judgment on a woman identified as Jezebel, and her followers. Despite being offered opportunity to repent (Revelation 2:21), this woman was still tempting Christians towards sexual sins and idolatry (Revelation 2:20). Despite this mercy, Jesus will not let her wicked activity go unchecked. He will put a stop to the depraved influence she held over the church. What is the issue here??? According to Christianity Jesus is God who will Judge the world; 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad Acts 17:31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”

@quintuslentulus6183 3 жыл бұрын
@A N Issues like this and many others should not be presented as binding towards Christians , since we are not bind by the Old testament, but with the New Covenant with Jesus. You can raise this issue with Jews, since they still follow Torah. If you can find something like this coming from Jesus in the New testament then I can discuss that. But you won't find any form of violence from Jesus, yet same cannot be said for Muhammad.

I want to ask shabir ally about the ayah which says that Allah throne was on the water?
@hasanshirazi9535
@hasanshirazi9535 5 жыл бұрын
There was “Water” before the Creation of Universe: Allah says in the Quran: “And He it is Who has created the heavens and the earth in six Days and His Throne was on the water, that He might try you, which of you is the best in deeds” [Hood 11:7]. Some of the people of Yemen asked the Prophet (saws) this and said: We have come to you to ask you about this matter. He said: “There was Allah, and there was nothing else besides Him, and His Throne was over the water. He wrote all things in the Book and He created the heavens and the earth.” Al-Bukhaari (2953) Hence, before creation of the universe we know that Allah had created the Throne (which is his biggest creation) and there was “الماء” which has been translated as “water”. “الماء” has several meaning i.e. water, liquid, fluid, juice (see Hans Wehr dictionary). Hence, what can be interpreted from this ayah is that there was some sort of “Primordial Fluid” prior to the creation of the universe. This might refer to the “Quark-Gluon soup” which is also a liquid like water with very low viscosity and is made up of the fundamental particles. This “soup” is thought to have been the source from which all energy and matter of the universe originated. You can read my detailed answer regarding creation of the Universe here: www.quora.com/How-long-did-it-take-Allah-to-create-the-Universe-and-the-Earth/answer/Syed-Hasan-Shirazi

I like the reform attempt and hope it continues but it's kind of sophomoric to think that for 1400 years all Muslim scholars and communities got the understanding of this verse wrong but this one man in Canada (who would ridicule such teachings) got it right. It's better to admit what the Quran is teaching (to physically discipline wives if need be) and say that we are better than that teaching so we'll reinterpret this verse. All and all I'm happy that Islam is starting to reform. It's about time.
@seconic1639
@seconic1639 6 жыл бұрын
With all due respect, why do you think or want to think that this constitute reform? Scholarly exchange has been norm within Islamic tradition for centeries, this is noting new, actaully, it's following the tradition.
@rostamferdowsi2853
@rostamferdowsi2853 6 жыл бұрын
There is a difference between exchange of theological beliefs and reforming theological beliefs. Ally is not exchanging but reforming. An exchange is you beat your wife, yes but you don't hit her in the face and another saying no you can hit her in the fact as long as you don't leave a mark. A reform is to say you don't hit her at all even if for 1400 years hitting her has been the norm understanding.
@teetee6366
@teetee6366 5 жыл бұрын
Rostam Ferdowsi I think your definition of an exchange here is borne out of the fact that you're stuck on the 1400 years old interpretation of that verse. You seem to think that the interpretation must be correct for the simple reason that it's been around for over 1400 years, and as such an exchange should necessarily involve couching such interpretation with stipulations and cautions. The reality is that the number of years that an idea or an understanding has been around for really doesn't make it true or close to truth at all. We've had instances where ideas held as truth even for over 1500 years turned out to be completely wrong. So, I think it is actually "anti-exchange" to dismiss a fresh perspective just for the simple reason that a contrary perspective has been around for a thousand and more years. There are chances that both the 1400 years old interpretation and Dr. Ally's modern interpretation are all wrong, but we must still allow for that chance in modern time. I think what we should focus on (instead of counting the number of years an idea has survived as justification for its truth) is to allow for diverse interpretations and then adopt the most consistent one by considering their explanatory scope and power, that way we will really be allowing for exchange or reform (it doesn't matter which name we call it).

It talks about divorce too for women if the man doesn't do his role as a man. The man is the head of the family so the final decision is his when it comes to relationship and family matters. But he can still listen to her and take her advice which doesn't take away from his leadership. This also aligns with biology and psychology of how the average woman wants to be submissive to her man and want him to lead the relationship, and the average man wants to be dominant over his woman. That is what masculinity and femininity is

So, apparently we have a new wildly different English interpretation. It isn't about husbands anymore. And the thing about "forsake them in bed", I guess that has to be thrown out altogether because in this new interpretation that phrase would not make any sense. That was to apply to a husband-and-wife relationship. It can't be about men in general because that would mean that men are allowed to beat women. So the only way to get out of this mess with any dignity is to proclaim that it is about the government authorities striking tainted women. There has been a whole lot of Muslim women in general, and Muslim wives in particular who needed this interpretation to begin 1300 years ago.

This troubled me from the beginning of the interview. I wanted the professor to be correct but his interpretation of 'refuse to share their beds' made no sense in the context of the surah. I realise there are nuances in Arabic but how could 'refuse to share their beds' convert into 'restrict them to their homes'? I think it would have been beteer to emphasise the lightness of the hit to the woman in light (excuse the pun) of the word used and also the example given in Surah 38:44. This would have been a great improvement in the lives of 7th century Arabic women. But enlightened laws that are out-dated need to be changed and I was glad to see the professor saw it that way.

+A M There are countless perfectly logical, completely rational reasons to question whether Muhammad was a real prophet, and if the Quran is the real word of God, and Islam is the one true religion. That is why there has always been the belief that if you do question such things, it might well be said by religious people that your mind has been taken by Satan. And of course that is also the reason why apostasy is seen as a sin almost as bad as murder. There is a video by Muslim spiritual adviser Nouman Ali Khan where he gives strict instructions not to think about the irrational aspects of Islam and the Quran. Ironically, I have been told by more than one Muslim that one of the tenets of Islam is to think freely. No such tenets actually exists, quite the contrary.

That word 'nushuus' Dr. Shabir Ally mentions (6.12s) before he conveniently distracts the young lady from it by pointing out it sounds like "new shoes" (because thats so on topic right?) means rebellion. The section of text being referenced here starts with "Good wives obey their husbands because God has put one above the other"....Another translation for this word 'nushuus' is arrogance. The Quran, in my perspective, is clearly communicating to men that their wives are to submit to the wills of their husbands and do as instructed...and that the justification for this is because God says it. Furthermore, it is also saying that when a wife is not being good aka rebellious aka not obedient then a man should use physical force to discipline her. What this man has said in reference to the physical abuse part is that because the times were different it was okay back then. Really? An act of assault coming from either man or woman would be wrong today or wrong if I read about it in a history book from 300,000 years ago. That takes no qualification or accolade to understand. I would not try to convince someone that once upon a time God somehow gave these instructions for any reason. Are we saying God's opinions have also changed with the times too? If so, this mans idea of God is very different from mine. The fact remains that anyone who believes that God intended for a verse instructing men to physically discipline women to be written into the one and only book (the Hadiths are what people claim the Prophet said...they aren't concrete at all and should not be used to support an argument) he gave to all of mankind for all time should ask themselves what their idea of God is. God to me is the Most High - meaning the greatest in all things: the most compassionate, the most knowledgeable et cetera. Now I do not claim to be anywhere near that level of righteousness however, if someone showed me this verse before it was released to the public it would be very clear to me the disastrous and ugly implications that would stem from releasing it. Are you implying God would not have been able to do the same sample analysis? You cannot convince me God has the nature of man which is imperfect and changeable. We change because as humans we don't know everything. God does, that is why the instructions shouldn't need to change or somehow be counted as invalid because a certain amount of time has passed. A lie told today will be a lie tomorrow and in 20 years. Wrong was wrong then and is wrong now, even if everyone alive didn't know any better - God would have. If you think this came from God I must accept you think of God as a tyrannical patriarchal dictator.

@@crestfire8008 Well for me my belief is enough but Islam is a religion where belief and proofs go side by side . So I can obviously " objectively prove " this. But doing it by typing so much is quite difficult. There are many videos already you can get a proof but let's have an example. There can be more but I know two words for heart in Arabic it's "qalb" and " fawad". Qalb is used when when heart is in normal form but fawad is used when heart is overwhelmed by some emotions. So with lesser words more topics can be covered in Arabic. There are many many such examples which proves that this is the best language for quran.but it's difficult to type that much. There must be a modification in your statement. and if will think deeply about it you will definitely agree with me Arabic is not difficult, messy or convoluted . It's most detailed and transparent language. May be because of it's details it seems difficult. Don't understand why scholars assume that the woman in this verse relating to husband and wife relationship is assumed to be of a bad character. I understand if pre-Islamic arabs had free lifestyle, then in that case did all the husband's became pious while women were left behind in piety? That doesn't make sense. Where ever there are verses adressing men and women for dress code and piety, those verses are one after the other. In Some translations women are supposed to protect their husband's finances and if she disobeys then the actions follow. This is absurd as well. Men and women (husband and wife) are awliya for one another. One of the scholars pointed out that the word 'Qinatatun' means water container and of course root word daraba has many other meanings, such as, walk away, cover etc. and in many other verses it means set forth, go forth, they travelled.

If Quran 4:34 is talking about a man "striking" his wife, it would have to be done in love and mercy. In other words, a gentle tap. Domestic abuse is evil. And of His signs is this: He created for you helpmeets from yourselves that ye might find rest in them, and He ordained between you love and mercy. Lo! herein indeed are portents for folk who reflect. Perhaps Dr. Shabbir should explain the verse linguistically as well. There are other interpretations for the word beat that are grammatically and definitionally correct such as 'have consensual intercourse with them', 'turn away from them', 'go along with them'. In addition, the hadith tells us that prophet Muhammad pbuh denounced physical and mental abuse when women came to him complaining about their abusive husbands.

Surah verse 4:34 does start off by asserting the dominance of a man over a women, then address men directly telling them how to assert their dominance by advising their women, forsaking them in bed, then beating if it persists. The next verse just says if someone from the outside observes something going on between them, then they could intervene in the way Dr. Shabir Ally tries to explain later on. Overall, Dr. did not do justice to this verse, it is very clear here that men are granted dominance over women which should not be the case. They both should have the same rights over each other. Not to mention that this contradicts certain aspects of the Qur'an which say men and women are equal.

Do you even know Arabic? How did you come to this conclusion that Quran spoke about dominance? The word used in that verse "qawamuna" translates to "protectors", "guardians" who guard them from any kind of harm.
@footballartistn7463
@footballartistn7463 4 жыл бұрын
@@1eV No sir I do not know arabic. You are also completely right in that it uses the word qawammuna (protector/guardian). Any man should defend their wife from harm as much as possible of course because they are mostly likely physically stronger. I use dominance here because it shows that the husband/wife relationship has a hierarchy, and the husband has been given the right to admonish his wife. This clearly means the man has a dominant role. You can protect someone and not harm them yourself. Especially here since these are husband/wife who should be able to talk to each other on equal footing. Hope that clarifies it.

@@footballartistn7463 Men have been given apparently the "upper hand" in some cases and then there are places where the women get the upper hand. Because the relationship of men and women is based on equity not equality. Men and women are very different from the physical and psychological perspective. So equity is more appropriate than equality. In this particular case, men have to warn, advise the women if he has the fear of her uprising. Meaning, she disobeys Allah openly, does adultery etc, which are grave crimes in Islam. These verses address the most extreme of situations. It's not a general green light for men to beat up their wives. Neither did the prophet Mohammed (pbuh) do this or teach the companions to beat up their wives. It's the opposite actually. He said never to hit on the face, or leave any mark on the skin, not to injure her badly and so on if there is no other way. You have to look at his life. He never beat his wives in his entire life even if they were being mean to him.

@@1eV Yeah I understand your equity over equality argument, but humans are more than just their biological makeups. Our ability to think and reason with one another is what sets us apart from the typical animal. The equity over equality argument would work here if we couldn't understand one another and were solely acting on instincts/emotions like most animals. Beating being granted here is unecessary due to the circumstances of the relationship in that they're partners. It just seems as thougg because the husband is likely more powerful, he has the right to enforce the law. If women were biologically stronger than men it would've been reverse. I'm not sure where it mentions specific cases because anyone can justify hitting for whatever reason they see fit. Therefore this verse is very problematic. In regards to the prophet not hitting his wives, it's true there are no reports but he still instructs his followers of how to practice it. In fact there's a hadith that says something along the lines of if you hit your wife like you hit your slave then don't sleep with them that night. I can't quote it right now as I don't have it in front of me but I'm sure you can find it. This hadith implies a man can still hit his wife like he hits his slaves but just not sleep with her that night. I'm not sure how a person is supposed to hit his slave but judging by this hadith it doesn't sound very nice.

Hard to resolve that "وَاهْجُرُوهُنَّ فِي الْمَضَاجِعِ" is for state not for the husband 🙂. Most well known and accepted meaning of وَاهْجُرُوهُنَّ فِي الْمَضَاجِعِ is "leave them in their beds". It's very clear that these suggestions are not for the state, rather it's for the husband. Wa alaykum salam, I agree, I think Muslims need to stop going around in circles with this verse to please the kuffar and just accept what it says, they may not like it, but the system outlined in that verse kept civilization going for thousands of years. Another thing that’s funny is that scholars like these will take the apparent meaning of any verse/Hadith about mercy, love, tolerance, forgiveness, etc but they heavily reinterpret any verses that would be deemed as controversial

It appears that most of the present day scholars/Imams speak I n accordance with the interpretations set by the four major school s of thought about 1200 years back. They go and search for interpretation from these references (1200 year old tool box) and present it to the people. I think they are not allowed to preach or say anything radically different from that eventhough the Quran is very explicit that in case of conflict use a better interpretation. Tough job being an scholar or imam. Common person can explore possible explanations and speak/discuss about it as most of us have access to continual learning.
