Its a shame that muslims are the ones to misuse this ayah.

Shukr Alhamdulilah, I believed since the beginning that this can't be the case how Allah can command men to beat their women when there is a way for Talaq if someone doesn't have compatibility or any other issue. Thank you so much for clarifying this. JazakAllah Khairun

Nauman Ali khan Is correct. Allah did command that, but only the way the prophet did ( as a gesture for expression of anger - not abuse ) Sunan Ibn Majah 1851

If a woman goes crazy, how about finding the cause of her anger if you tried everything then divorce. Beating a woman isn't meant to be a solution. Humans are to learn, solve problems. If nothing works leave but to hit her in other to correct that is toxic and it's not healthy for him or her.

Seriously? Divorce? Also it says hit gently. Not abuse or beat. Hitting gently part is there to extend the marriage. These days so many divorces, these are in place to repair the marriage, if not then divorce is there.

It also says have patience, wait, fix the problem in every way first which is what the prophet Muhammad did. And it doesn’t say if she disobeys him, it says if she’s going crazy, etc.

@@paixetjustice7932 No, he never laid his hands on his wives. I think we are forgetting there are steps to this. Ignore her, whether it be for months or weeks. Then choose to not sleep in the same bed as her. After that it either leads to divorce or what it says. Only hit gently if shes going crazy or something.

The original Arabic doesn't say 'gently' at all. That was only added to certain English translations to make the Qur'an seem slightly less misogynistic. Either way, you're condoning domestic violence under the guise of 'extending the marriage'. Thank you for illustrating how morally screwed up Islam is.

@@limd7310 No it absolutely isn't. There is no equivalent verse of 4:34 that says wives can admonish husbands if they merely *fear* disobedience from their husbands, and then use physical force against them as a 'last resort'. Islam is misogynistic to its core.

@@limd7310 My beliefs are irrelevant. Usually when people ask that, it's an attempt to take the focus off the topic of Islam. My source is the Qur'an. Again, there is no equivalent verse to 4:34 for wives. Nowhere does it say women *can* be the maintainers of men, that women can admonish men if they *fear* disobedience, that women can use physical force against them. Do you actually think otherwise?

This mostly makes sense to me, but what I'm curious is that (at least in this verse) there's no stage 4, so what should you do if initial light hitting doesn't work? I think the logical recommendation would be to consider divorce, but I fear that many would use this ayah to justify that as long as they have gone through the first 2 steps they can keep hitting/beating their wives until they are obedient.

Nouman Ali Khan, is the type of muslim man who can absolutely make many non believers and disbelievers, BELIEVE, through his power of truth and benevolence, people won't be muslims unless you are preaching true Islam. Respect to this guy, one of true and rare muslims, love him to death (no homo, no lgbtq). I absolutely respect and love Islam, for being the true guide of morality in many different aspects, because it provides, detailed, clear and easy to understand instructions for people to never deviate from morality. This is the true value of Islam in my honest opinion. I however, still remain, a non believer, but only a non believer in Islamic theology, because of some logical contradictions I have found, that have never been answered by any muslim I came across. I may feel comfortable about sharing these contradictions under two conditions. A) Before hearing them you will have to make a vow to never leave Islam. I seriously don't wanna be that guy that takes you away from your faith. B) You can not nurture the thought within you that I mean any disrespect or insult by any of these things. Because I wanna be clear that I clearly don't and I never will. These are merely logical discussions, and they don't affect my respect for Islam and my favourite Abrahamic prophet Muhammad PBUH, because my respect comes from other things, not the theology of Islam. I am a devoted Hindu, my religion would be polytheistic by Islamic standards because it tells you to worship everyone and everything, *even though it does make the clear distinction between Almighty God and deities (who are creations of God)...* The difference is our main scripture Vedas dont *just* say God is the greatest in everything, it also says... *Nothing exists but God.* Oh and also, there is the fact that the Vedas have made unbelievable scientific claims of complex nature and none of those claims, have ever.... been disproven, and Vedas have no logical contradictions. Which is the reason for my faith. However this video, allows me to have pride for my muslim brothers and sisters all over the world, that there religion, is nothing that should be demonized in anyway, shape of form. Two things that are very hard to explain to muslim people, with limited time, is that not all polytheism leads to evil, some particular kinds do, and hence my admiration for Islam's Monotheism... And the second thing is, Muslims, Christians, Jews, Sikhs and Buddhists are more like us Vedantists (actual Hindus) than they can possibly fathom, and for that, to a true Hindu, * true Muslims are our own people.* We see no difference. Protect this man, Nouman Ali Khan, at all costs, the brightest star of the younger muslim people. Al Hamdulillah.

“Men shall carefully protect and maintain women because God has granted each (party) some superior characteristics over the other (party), and because they (men) spend out of their possessions (to maintain women). Thus righteous women are obedient (to God) and guard themselves in the absence of witnesses in return for God’s protection. As for women whose nushooz/leaving you fear, give them advice/say kind words to them, and leave them alone in the bed, and darb them/let them dwell (there). Then if they willingly obey you, do not seek another way against them. God is Exalted, Great.” (an-Nisa 4:34)” The word “nushooz” cannot mean “rebellion” since it is already used in meanings other than this in the Quran. The word darb in this verse cannot be assigned the meaning “beating” because it breaks the integrity of the Qur’an, as well as the coherence of the verse itself. Here is why: وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُم مَّوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ “Among His signs is [the fact] that He has created spouses for you from among yourselves so that you may find comfort in them. He has planted love and mercy between you; in that are signs for a group of people who reflect.” (ar-Rum 30:21) If God has created spouses with love and mercy between them, there can be no room for beating in a family because it would annihilate all these positive emotions and plant the seeds of fear and hatred in between. www.islamandquran.org/research/does-god-permit-beating-wives.html

Better translation here for dharb is 'gentle hitting'. This is exactly how all early commentators defined it. And nushooz is indeed a type of 'rising up' against the husband. The linguistic definition is 'to rise', you can refer to any Arabic lexicon.

Men ... maintain women because ...[coordinating clause] they spend ... (to maintain them) = They maintain women ... because they maintain women or They spend on maintenance of women because they spend on women to maintain them? Also, what does qawwaam with postposition of 'alaa mean (vide Lane or Taj al-'Uruus etc)? Many more humble questions on the rest of the translation. Interestingly, Wudud claims that her interpretation is heavily based on Islahi's hermeneutics. Islahi's exegesis affords us an entirely different interpretation. Sincerest apologies for any inadvertent impudence in asking my humble questions
