I wish they would teach “critical thinking”, bias, understanding how empirical evidence is gained and disinformation in schools. It’s not as complex as I initially thought. This will greatly help society. Finland teach disinformation in schools, and research shows they are the country least likely to fall for disinformation and hoax’s. it is far more important than we realise, it is not an exaggeration to say our long term existence is dependent on it. Example 1 - Climate Change 2 - Someone like Trump becoming president 3 - The response fromCountries/ communities to a Pandemic (outside of authoritarian / communist rule). The success of these are, I think primarily dependent on how informed vs misinformed their communities are.

@Jack Ritchie Evidence, right. NYT is THE paper M. Crichton described in his famous Gel-Man description Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward-reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them. In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know

What about the gatekeepers? Editorial oversight also means protecting corporations and donors, so there's always a filter.... I would say a blogger typically has LESS motivation to be nefarious or to gaslight you, while I see it all the time from the news.... We must ask the tough questions about why someone is presenting a certain narrative and not make assumptions.... The New York Times gets all kinds of things wrong, despite their editors, so that's no reason to assume a story is true.... If the algorithms on social media were configured correctly, we wouldn't be bolstering stories that are sensational and independent journalists wouldn't be incentivized to bend the truth or to lie.... That's where our concerns should be focused! Support independent journalists rather than assume they have an agenda.... We should have evidence before just going there....

Here's what I took from this conversation - truth can be distinguished from fiction via vetted sources, specifically journalists like those that write for the New York Times. One of the curious parts of Finding Ultra is Rich's description of the 'guttural wail' that his affirmation by the New York Times as an 'influencer of influencers' elicited. Makes sense that a discussion of truth would lead there in some way.

I'm so glad you brought up this topic. It has been on my mind and heart. It is my belief that the greatest danger is the fear and anger that prevents meaningful discussion and debate... the polarisation which pits one side against the other on any issue, rather than looking for the simple truth in all of it. Or should I say the complex truth? Can we say that, on a given issue it may not be this or that, it may not be either or but both and? That may sound like a cliche but I believe it's valid. Too many people put themselves on one side or the other. At that point, the mind closes. I believe that censorship in a democracy is exceedingly dangerous, if it comes from the left or the right. I respectfully but definitely disagree with the statement that 5G concerns fall into the category of 'conspiracy theory'. I think it's unfortunate that anyone who questions the safety and efficacy of vaccines is also put into the same category as a crackpot, anti-vax, conspiracy theorist. Maybe if we just left the word conspiracy out of it and used different words. Questioning the extent that greed, lust for power, corporate influence and control over governmental agencies and news outlets...that should be investigated. That's the job of journalists and newspapers like the New York Times. I have great respect for the Times and yet I do see a bias there. It's disturbing because I felt that it was a source I could really trust. As for listening to and respecting our doctors, well, I have plenty of respect for them but I certainly take everything they say with a grain of salt because they're in the business of prescribing, not promoting health. Not through any fault of their own. They are simply untrained. I know what you mean about the trend of disputing experts just because they're experts, the putting down of intellectuals, the dumbing-down of the nation. I get it. For the record, I am a progressive, liberal Democrat. .But on some of these, issues, I'm listening to conservatives, although not with the same perspective. I understand their concerns and fears..The sad part is , the extent to which liberals are biased and suppressing information, it is going to help the ultra conservatives win the election. It's just another piece of meat to chew on and fight over. It is distressing to me that my liberal, well-educated, well-meaning friends seem to have swallowed the whole pill on many of these issues, without careful investigation. It's easy to say that all lockdowns, indefinitely, are the way to go when you're an upper class white dude working from home on your computer. How about if you're standing behind a cash registerall day with a mask on your face (yes I do wear masks in public) or if you've lost your job or your home? What about people going hungry? Child abuse? We can't ignore that and say that anybody who questions some of these policies doesn't care about the safety of people! I care deeply about the safety of people and yet many of our most vulnerable citizens died anyway. Who knows why they put covid-19 patients in some nursing homes? Who knows what goes on behind those closed doors? One thing seems to be pretty sure, I don't think we can survive another pandemic. At what point will the lights go off, the food stop coming and chaos break out?. How close are we to Major economic collapse ? I certainly don't have the answer to these questions. This is 'above my paygrade', as the saying goes, but I'm listening to different people. 'Experts' and some others too but ones who I respect. I try to be discerning . I look for sources with evidence to back up what they say. The health of the nation was already collapsing. Worldwide, health was collapsing, before Covid. That is something that should be discussed. How did we get ourselves into this vulnerable mess and how can we heal ourselves, individually and as a whole global community? People on the left say that anything that comes up from the right is b******* and vice versa. I hear people arguing in gas stations and grocery stores about masks. The country is ripping itself apart. The seeds of violence are there, watered by all the fear that everybody is feeling. Fear of the pandemic, fear of the loss of civil liberties and who's going to be running the show when those are gone. Fear of pharmaceutical companies and forced vaccinations. Fear of those who are not vaccinated..... The list goes on and on. We just have to stop fighting each other. Rich Roll, I love your show. Can I ask you something? If you haven't heard it, PLEASE listen to the respectful debate that took place between Bobby Kennedy Jr. and Alan Dershowitz. Bring him on the show, if you can. Whatever you think about covid, I am so deeply concerned about the vaccine issue. I think it is so very important. Please listen with an open mind, for those of you who are waiting for a vaccine to save us. Thank you very much for all you do to bring truth and light into the world. I believe that is your intention and I've learned a lot from listening to your show. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5fRe5xtrrF-nac

Galileo was not considered a conspiracy theorist, he was considered a blasphemist because religion can never except it’s wrong. The church was the conspiracy. He was a scientist and an expect of his time and was vilified because people couldn’t accept the truth. His story is similar to the experts of today, vilified for going against the conspiracy.

One challenge is that the lower the barrier of access to media distribution, the lower the barrier for "experts" to get their information out there. People are questioning experts because we are getting flooded with information from people with conflicting points of view. Just look at the hundreds and hundreds of research papers on COVID, many with conflicting information in them. It confuses people and so they either have serious trust issues with anyone that says they are an expert and/or they just search out a source that seems credible that aligns with what they already think.

i do believe that as we evolve and with the advent of the tsunami of information these days experts are hard to find, we also realise more and more that everything is connected so who is truly an expert these days of algorythms and mass information, thats why experts are being questioned, and question we must as we further evolve, of course these are crazy times but they are also the best of times, we have more info then ever. thats the oxymoron.

Only in America you need an expert to tell you how to play, how to sleep, how much to eat and drink, how to pass your bowels and urine, how to chewt, how much time and money to spend and on what, how to think, how to love, what is wrong, what is right, what is kind, what is not... What happened to your own common sense, an untethered mind and will, your own curiosity, the courage and the discipline to observe and search, learn and conclude? To study the history and the consequences of not having your own opinions, rather following and being pushed where ever the wind blows, what ever is the fashion or the oppressive trend? People today are so wobbly.

Answer to some of your questions: 1. How did we get so distrustful of vetted sources? You mean government, because although many believe government to be a reliable source of information, they have a horrible record of being anything but honest; and being that most of the important research in the world is funded by government that research also becomes suspect. For instance, did you know the US government has funded 90% of the world's research on illicit drugs? 2. Saying someone's source is dubious is pretty low blow....say who? Says you? There are epidemiologists who greatly differ on covid 19 issues. Experts with stellar reputations. There really isn't an unbiased source of data...even experts have biases. 3. I don't know if you are referring to government as a source of data that can be manipulative, but quite literally everything government says or does is calculated manipulation....including 13 years of indoctrination in public school. If you have access to children for all that time during their formative years, feed them propaganda in a boot camp like setting and at least half of them still really distrust you, maybe the ideas you're feeding them aren't really that good...at all. 4. The NY Times? Really? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_York_Times_controversies I use this source for info, impeccable well researched info. www.aier.org 5. We used to know what news sources were truth because WE HAD PRECIOUS few sources to pick from. Before the internet...well you really had to believe the NY times, government and cbs news because that was it, and unless you wanted to spend your life in a library looking up facts, you pretty much trusted it. The internet is what has caused so much controversy because of the vast easy access to information. People start seeing the 3 sources they always trusted weren't as truthful as they thought, and that they had actually lied to them when they had no other way to get info....you tend to not want to trust these sources anymore. 6. Fauci admitted to lying early on....why trust him? And again...he's government. 7. Why do we all have to be on the same page about things? 8. The laws of physics are probably the only type of knowledge where you will get widespread acceptance of an idea, but even things we take as absolute fact today, were once "conspiracy theories," such as when most of the world thought the earth was the center of the universe. Galileo knew the earth revolved around the sun....everyone called him a conspiracy theorist, and we all know how that turned out. 9. The philosopher who is credited with Occums razor preferred the idea of simplicity to defend the idea of divine miracles. Hey, if you can't explain something, just say, well God works in mysterious ways....pretty simple, right? 10. Why do some write off others as "crazy" or "unintelligent" because they don't think, believe or behave as they do on any given issue? Is it because by discrediting ideas that differ from your own on an issue, you can then appeal to government violently mandate the behavior you desire in others? Why can't we just agree to disagree? The individuality of every person on earth is what makes life interesting. The freedom to think, research, imagine, create and speak on any idea should be the thing we strive for. Thinking the mass of humanity needs to come into agreement on ANY issue is ridiculous and quite frankly, about as totalitarian as it gets. Peace.
