Does This Laundry Ball ACTUALLY Work?!

We got a WonderBall™ from Mystic Wonders. It promises to all but eliminate the use of laundry detergent. Does it live up to that promise? DirtFarmerJay gives you “the dirt!”

Because of the content we’ve produced about our front-load washing machine, we’ve had a lot of conversations with our viewers about various laundry products and their effectiveness.
Recently we found out about Wonderball™ laundry balls and had a great conversation with Fern, who is the inventor of the product. She’s been offering these laundry aids for many years and is quite passionate about her product line.
She sent us a set of laundry balls, as well as another “ball” product that is placed in the dryer to help keep items separated and fluffed for quicker drying and less wrinkles. We’ll take a look at those another time.
The Wonderball™ is a bit smaller than a tennis ball, is plastic, and is filled with a proprietary liquid mineral blend.
Ms. Gunderson indicates the product works through physics. The package states, “The frequency-enhanced mineral blend in the ball creates an energy field when agitated in the machine. When this energy meets with the water, the water is in its best cleaning state. It is the water that does the cleaning. No detergent is needed.”
Whether or not this sounds like “alternative thinking”, we put it to the test. We found that the product worked, but that it was helpful to pre-treat stains or heavily soiled areas. Indeed, that is in line with what is also stated on the package: “Ms. Gunderson dilutes hair shampoo for ring around the collar and personal stains. For kitchen and outside stains, she uses diluted dish soap.”
To use the Wonderball™, simply load your washing machine as you normally would, and pretreat any small stain areas as stated earlier. Place the ball in the tub, and run the cycle. When the cycle is complete, remove the articles and leave the ball in the tub for the next load.
We were pleasantly surprised at how clean the clothes turned out. Fern indicates that a ball will last about 3 years before needing replacement. She indicates that the product helps water be “wetter”, boosting its cleansing power. So far so good. We think it’s worth a try!
At the time of filming, the price of a Wonderball™ was $42, or 2 for $70. They are also available in a kit that includes one laundry ball and two dryer balls for $53 for one, and $90 for two.

do a test: stain three shirts the same way, wash them three different ways: - laundry ball - plain water - normal detergent

I have been using the WonderBall for three years: I appreciate that my laundry always looks and feels clean without any perfumes and slippery remnants from detergents. Carrying a non-messy ball around when we travel in. our motorhome for laundry runs is just wonderful. I highly recommend Fern Gunderson's product!

The dryer balls also make good chew toys for dogs with bad teeth. Soft and chewy on the gums. I drilled a 1/4 inch hole in one of them and then put some kipple in the ball. Our old dog loves it! Oh! They work great for laundry too!

We have used the Wonderball laundry balls for several years - both in a top loading machine and in a High Efficiency front loading machine. They do clean your laundry without the use of chemicals. But, agree that you must pre-treat stains and heavily soiled/oily areas. We do have a water softener. Guess the only way you will see if they work for you is to try them yourself.

As an engineer and someone who had taken a lot of chemistry including organic, I'm calling foul here. Your observations as are very subjective. Only way to know is to test with a control, and the magical laundry ball then report back the results and let the KZbinrs decide for themselves. Im pretty sure if this thing really worked, washing machine companies would include it or recommend it to stand out from the competition. Until then, save your money. If its too good to be true, its not true! Sorry, but I remain highly skeptical on this. I'll still watch your other videos ehich are very informative, but not sold on this snake oil.

Thanks, Paul. We do plan to do a controlled test, using duplicate articles with the same substance soiling the articles, and do 3 different loads using powder, liquid, and the ball. Whatever the results are, we'll publish them. Thanks for writing! Best, DFJ

It seems like the old school top loader washers last longer than the new washers.

Thanks for writing and weighing in. I'd say overall that "old school" items were built to last longer without so much planned obsolescence. We had a top loader for many years, replaced a couple of times, now using the front loader and really like it with no problems so far. We'll see how long it goes without a major repair. This ball works. I ordered bssed on using a friends while i was dog sitting at her house. It cleaned every bit as well as my detergent on regular laundry as well as 'dog laundry' You cannot tell me its a scam, sorry guys
