Reprazent used drum samples live on stage, however Roni Size then went on to create Breakbeat Era where he used a live drummer on recordings and on stage - it was beautiful, take a listen because he was pushing boundaries way ahead of his time. The city was Bristol and they had so many amazing producers and had and still still have a unique sound in the UK. The illegal raves going on in the early 90's were epic

This was part of the evolution of drum n bass and what was later to be known as the Bristol sound which had that funky element to it pioneered by Roni size and Bryan gee for the next decade or two with their labels full cycle and v recordings which produced countless bangers. Liked your comment on dnd trying out sifferent sounds and genres. Its so true, sampling was huge in its early days, so many different drum patterns and techniques, poly rhythms and vocals. Compare that to a house song that is 99% of the time just a 4x4 beat all the way through
@Nosh_Feratu
@Nosh_Feratu Күн бұрын
it started in the late 80s really, but this era in the UK (kinda early to mid/late 1990s) was really heavily Jazz influenced, so we had loads of labels like Mo Wax, Acid Jazz, Soul Jazz Records springing up, and we had all different kinds of fusions with Jazz, Hip Hop/trip hop and Electronica, Drum and Bass, House. . . so we had some pretty big artists come out of that like the two you mentioned here Jamiroquai, Reprazent, also Gilles Peterson founded Acid Jazz records in the late 80s and that had quite a big impact as it brought a lot of genuine Jazz artists into more mainstream musical styles, I think he was kinda doing like Mancusos loft parties in the US did for disco and jazz artists like Vincent Montana Jr, in the late 70S thru the 80S etc

It's nothing to do with 9/11. It's just that in the late 90s/early 2000s, labels thought that setting their videos in new york or los angeles would mean what sells here in the UK would cross over to America.

1. Yes its pronounced Ronny 2. British genres like Garage, Jungle, Drum N Bass and Grime, always take all of the previous influential components like reggae and dancehall music, hip hop, forward into themselves and then they influence themselves, so grime led on from garage and so is very heavily linked to it, D Double E used to be a DnB DJ and then Dizzee and Wiley came up on garage sets and then you have the blend where DnB kind of drifted in and out of popularity between the 30+ years its been around and now you have P Money and what most would consider grime MC's, jumping back onto DnB 3. the diggable planets reference i get which i bet is because both tunes are built around the double bass. 4. Goldie was one of the godfathers of Drum N Bass and invented time stretching, something which went on to become a normal part of modern electronic music, but theres a few videos about it if you wanted to know more 5. DnB might be compared to computer technology in terms of how it advanced and quickly changed its overall sound at lots of different times, you could say there are particular sounds of particular eras like the 90s stuff, the 2010s Jump Up, but in all honesty, its a mixed bag, because there will always be the mavericks that were leading the way with tunes that might not have fit in with what was going on at that time. Its too complicated to try and track IMO. it would be some crazy 6 hour documentary and even then you wouldnt be able to cover everything. Dont forget about one of the sickest DnB mixes of all time was from a video game.GTA3, MSX FM, Dj Timecode and Mc Codebreaker ;)

Another childhood classic. Crazy that dnb never hit USA. Glad you guys get to experience decade old DNB classics for first time. Get em coming. You have such a fun journey ahead. Then you have also Jungle that is massive.

Always wondered why Jungle/DNB never took off in the States. Techno too, for that matter. They can’t seem to see past hip hop, which was neutered and turned into clown music.

@@jakesolo2872 Interestingly enough there is a EDM genres from us from like "Detroit techno" and "Chicago house" and also "electro" that was popular among b-boys. I think this goes to show what happens when record labels are dominating a domestic market. mp3 first and then music/videostreaming really opens up the world.

it took off just fine in the US and we have had a healthy scene for 30 years all across the country. it was never commercially viable in the US (except for music beds in commercials and late night MTV) but that's fine. we lived it and loved it all the same.

@@jakesolo2872 the size of the US and a lack of exposure on radio. none of these media corporations were taking a chance to play reprazent/bukem/goldie during drive time on the radio. millions still built and maintain a healthy US dnb scene even without that support

@@wess6433 - Yeh man, first time I went to NYC in 97 all the records shops were crazy for DnB. Everything was kinda in reverse; we were a bunch of London lads digging crates for Detroit Techno, Chicago House & old skool HipHop and everyone there wanted to know about all the stuff coming out of London & Bristol at the time. The music was so much more of a melting pot back then. Shout out to Sonic Groove, Liquid Sky, A1, Fat Beats and so many others........ Good times.

Not quite a hidden gem in the UK, their album won the Mercury Music Prize in 97, so this was a pretty well known track.

I remember seeing Roni size at the Que back in 99. Planet V night. I still get goosebumps just thinking about that night. It lives, the bass is the heartbeat that it gives When we apply the brakes, there'll be no skids Just more elements to consider as we glide Dimensions and the measurements and the evidence you will find Change it, rearrange it so it's regularly updated Hits from every angle so expect the unexpected Represent the fusion of the mind and stay connected The starboard is presented, the slice of the market's been indented Delivering the style we give you so that means a mention In your direction is the bearing that we aimed ascension Instead the way the floor the stunner made a re-invention And then you get your money's worth before you've even sensed it Make you bigger for bigger for the whole nation Send it down to one and all with no discrimination Like a safe with 50 locks, there's many combination No matter which way that you turn you reach the same destination The fullness of the spectrum, 360 keep it circling Deep inside the flow is where it's working it Underneath, submerging it, time to make it go deeper Way past the point that blows holes in your speaker Under and over to get over and under First you get the lightning and then you get the thunder The sound is the music and the music is the feature

I left comments on here months and months ago saying to react to old dnb tunes and it's great to see you start to do it but I hope you will look at many more I love drum and bass and Mampi Swift the one, Pascal serious sounds, Bad Company the nine,DJ Krust warhead and the warhead 2000 remix would be a good start, that is just a few proper rave tunes it would be great if you could check out some old live sets because that's what the whole point of jungle drum and bass is about there's really no point in just picking out a couple of old dnb tunes like zinc ready or not remix or roni size brown paper bag and listening to and analysing them all the way through because they weren't made for that , they were made to mix live on a big loud sound system and to be played for the people who were there ,at that time dnb was purely underground and so special I would love to see you really delve into this alot more ,I love watching your videos ❤
