Thank you for outstanding practical advise. I had a total hip replacement 3 weeks ago using an anterior approach and have been walking without assistance from a walker or cane from day 3 post surgery. I was not in pain before surgery but very stiff which was impacting my ability to shift my weight whilst walking on uneven ground. There is already an noticeable increase in my range of motion as compared to my non surgery still arthritic hip. Prior to surgery I was very active (walking 5-6 miles a day) and made an effort to do exercises to further strengthen my hips. I think this has paid off in a rapid recovery. Physical therapy was not required post surgery but I opted for it. It has been very helpful in adjusting my gait to take pressure off my knees and SI joint. Prior to surgery my gait had gotten quite off kilter in order to compensate for the hip arthritis.

I was almost completely bedridden for 6 months after a two year wait. The psychological damage was as bad as the deterioration in all my muscles... 8 months post surgery I'm still struggling. Mostly because I don't have any support and keep trying to do things above my capability. Like everything, it's harder to heal when you're 66

Sounds awful. Small achievable steps and plenty of rest will help. I hope that you make a full recovery.

Great as always Jeremy , I'm glad I'm only 53 and it's ware and tare from years of rugby and bricklaying. Anyway I get a happy ending my surgery is dec6 and my wife and daughters arrive from overseas on the 3rd. I get around everywhere on two crutches, to the shops on the bus , I don't let it stop me . Cheers

I have no choice but to wait. My BMI is too high so no one will operate. So far I lost 25 pounds but need to lose more...

@@Lathamhipsurgery Thanks. My doctor has me on Ozempic to help me speed up the weight loss. However, I'm also a diabetic which is the real reason for taking the med. So far it lowered A1C from 8 to 6.4

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in both hips 3 years ago but could not be referred as I was overweight.I had another x ray in February this year,my GP said it was the worst result he had seen.I have now lost weight, I have had to wait 6 months, I am seeing a physiotherapist tomorrow,I don't think they can help as the hips are to bad now.Goodness knows how long I will have to wait to see a orthopedic consultant.,😥😥

I have been waiting for over 3 years for a full hip replacement, l live in Scotland, l have it on good authority the wait is around 9 months it has become clear to me l won't be getting surgery any time soon, l had a pre op 4 months ago yet still no further progress, l am asthmatic so they asked my GP to arrange a chest xray which came back clear 3 months ago, still nothing to see here, l do have a solicitor on the case

What's even more worrying Jeremy is excessive deaths am not saying its because of waiting but like your saying it doesn't help.most people waiting Jeremy like my old dad says haven't got a carrot to be able to pay so they mt never get it done or indeed die before hand. Its a real sad sad situation as elton John says.never has this country been in such a mess Jeremy people are dieing when they should be living. Thanks for taking the trouble to speak to us.we love Jeremy.

It's desperate Lee. The uselessness of the establishment is plain for all to see and we are all paying the price for their failure to lead and govern us with integrity and honesty. Tough times ahead. Stay close to your friends and family and look after one another.
