Dr. Latham, I've been following your videos and others and just want to say how much they helped me in my decision to have hip surgery THR. I had my operation two days ago on Friday, here in Japan. The whole team here from my surgeon and wonderful anaesthesiologist to the nurses, physios and support staff, have made it, if I can use the words, thoroughly enjoyable. Prior to my surgery, I didn't have as much pain as many do, but my mobility was getting less and less. It was really depressing me as I've always had an active life as a karate practitioner. When my surgeon saw my x-rays he said it was already really bad. Bone on bone at the top and bone growths on the inner area. He gave me two options... One, a very sedentary lifestyle, taking painkillers etc., or, Two, if I really wanted to be active as I'd like to be, I absolutely needed surgery. I made my decision on the spot to go ahead as I was getting more and more depressed and it was having an impact on my home life which I treasure. That was just under two months ago and now here I am on the road to recovery, making good progress and looking forward to my future. I'll be 60 in a week and while this might seem young to many people, I didn't want to wait more years in discomfort and depression and as you said, in further worsening physical condition. I want to enjoy my life now. I know everyone has a different view and opinion and maybe some folks have good reasons to delay their surgery, but from my point of view I'm glad I decided to "go for it". I also had the full backing of my wife and family... My wife said, "I want my Superman back!" 😅 Do your research, get a good surgeon and team, consider the benefits... and make your decision. Many thanks Dr. Latham (Mister?)🤔 for all of your great content. It really helped me a lot. Thank you so much. Absolutely no regrets. Best wishes from Japan. 🙇🏻‍♂️🙂👍

Hey Jerry, Congratulations on your hip replacement surgery and the positivity you have regarding your future lifestyle. Just reading your brief life outline, we have some similarities. I am 61, married and was very active but not the past 2 yrs. I've had to cut out hiking, 1 to 2 mile jogging, walks with my wife or friends. Luckily for you, it seemed you didn't experience the worse pain & limitations and thats great for you, I on the other hand waited to long, the pain is just to intense now, its even hard to sleep for more than 4 hours. And yes, depression has sunk in. But in 30 days, I'll be in surgery. !!! Thanks for your comment. 👍

@@LEFTaTIP Great to hear about your upcoming surgery 🙂👍 I really hope to comment as much as I can on channels such as Dr. Latham's, in the hope of encouraging folks in our situation. As someone said on the net, "It's not your grandmother's hip replacement anymore." Thanks for taking the time to reply and I wish you every success. 🙂👍

My husband is 71 & his hip has been bothering him for the last two years and getting progressively worse. An x-ray showed bone on bone. He is in otherwise good health. Based on this don't you think he'd be better off getting a hip replacement now versus waiting?...

From what you have said, he'd probably do well to consider having surgery sooner rather than later. An experienced hip surgeon will be able to assess him and guide him through the options.

I'm also here to say and give Dr Latham many, many thanks for his videos on hip replacement. I'm a person/ patient that strives to fully understand the entire process of what can happen. I try to not get caught up in the things that could go wrong and while its hard not to think about it.., I just concentrate on being mentally and physically at my best so I can recover and start enjoying my life again. The last 2 yrs has been a process of limiting body functions & continuous increased pain !!!, from tying my shoes, to picking up a dropped paper or pen , to getting in & out of my car to walking upstairs in my own home....I'm at my max in my pain threshold. Luckily my hip replacement surgery will be 30 days from today !!!!. Again, a big thanks to Dr Latham for his top, detailed knowledge of hip replacement surgery, the thought process, the recovery and most important ENJOYING LIFE again.

Thanks Dr. for taking the time to help educate those of us with bad hips. My left hip has been progressively getting worse over the last 10 yrs., limiting my walking and golfing in the last 2-3 yrs.. Getting into my car sometimes required me to lift my leg in to avoid pain. I've never suffered excruciating pain in the hip, but I have had to take Aleve on occasion to help play golf. My x-rays indicate severe osteoarthritis with some osteophytes present as well. I was just recently scheduled for surgery (Oct.18) after a 2 yr. wait, but over the last 4 or so weeks I've seen my pain retreat significantly. I did join a gym about 10 months ago and have been progressively building up the strength around the hip/buttocks muscles. Perhaps this has finally started to help? I know osteoarthritis doesn't go away/get better, but for now, I've decided to delay the surgery for another 6 months to see if in fact I can manage this thru regular exercise. I'm almost 61 and in great health otherwise.

Good decision. If it’s not troubling you too much then surgery is best avoided! Thanks for your kind comment. Much appreciated.

Cemented hip replacement is done due to infection but now it is advised to remove the same without replacing another give your opinion

It sounds as though there is persistent infection. Complete removal of the implants and cement is sometimes necessary to clear the infection.

I have heart failure, and I have severe arthritis in my hips and my ejection fraction is at 28% and I've been told straight answer was no to hip replacement as I have the chance of dying on the operating table

Sorry to hear that. Severe cardiac problems are a contraindication to major surgery.
