It's so nice to see people having a nice and normal conversation about masculinity and what it means to be a gentlemen, and I quite enjoy how the real theme of this conversation is more of 'how to be a better human' than it is about being a man. I really love this channel's content and it means a lot to me as a younger trans man that you guys are so open and have such pleasant conversations on gender. I listened the full way through, great work!

There is so much that goes into being a man, and from there, being considered a gentleman. First of all, in my opinion, the ego must be held in check. When I perceive a man as one who's head will not fit through the doorway, I will likely perceive them as pompous, pretentious, superficial, careless, and completely unapproachable. A true gentleman is one whose external presentation reflects who they are in their heart and soul, and so much so, that it is palpable to almost everyone they cross paths with each and every day. For women, the same. I find that a genuinely warm smile, where the eyes are also smiling, will literally make a person's day, whether they have consciously realized it in that moment or not. I have made quite a study of this when grocery shopping. They will return a warm smile that lights up their face, and warms my heart. Great presentation as always! Lisa

But, I ask you, is it not possible for a man to show someone such a smile? And is it not possible for women to have big egos? Are these really aspects of masculinity or do we just like these things in general?

I think our concepts of Masculinity and being a Man are completely inseparable from our surroundings, class, nationality etc. What it means to be a real man would be totally different for a working class 18th century Caribbean sailor or a middle class Scottish Victorian preacher or a modern day Japanese diplomat. I disagree with James when he says there was a consensus about what being a man meant in the past, Rudolph Valentino was a famous example of someone who caused a lot of discussion about the nature of masculinity in the 1920s. That said, I don't agree with some left-wing thinkers who argue that gender is entirely socially constructed, I think there is a core element of masculinity that does transcend culture and society, we just have to find out what it is for ourselves.
@Mcarthywasright
@Mcarthywasright 22 күн бұрын
I agree and well put. We are products of our era, our surrounding and the echos of the past. Masculinity is continually evolving and each of us gets to play a part in conveying what that means for our time which makes it interactive and exciting. As we get further away from that anchoring authenticity of masculinity the more important historical elements of masculinity will be in adopting and recalibrating to recenter on a true north for men. For that I’m thankful

You make a good point but I think you are contradicting yourself. If masculinity transcends culture and society, at least partially, how can you find it in yourself? All parts of you are made up of culture and society, it is deeply inseparable even from the parts that may not be. And looking into yourself can't be separated from culture and society either since your vision is strongly skewed by these aspects.

Lovely to listen too. As a man in my 30s, I have now worn a suit pretty much my whole career. I love the suit, any reason to wear one I will. Classical masculine traits are not what I thought was part of my journey however, it is almost becomes part of the way I try to act and present myself. My accent (being born in the north of England) has dimmed, I try and measure what I do now and say. All because when I was young I loved wearing a coat.

‘Outdated’ is dismissal masquerading as criticism. We all know what a man is and what a woman is. And men and women are not the same. These are things we’re told to forget or pretend to not know. Being steadfast with the truth and not pretending the emperor’s clothes are lovely is masculine. Courage. Truth to power. Honour. Taking care of yourself and being physically capable is masculine. You may someday be required to protect the man next to you. In Celtic society obesity was punished with heavy fines.

Perhaps men and women are not the same, but masculinity and feminity are concepts we consider seperate, but the mistake is to think that they contrast or diametrically oppose one another. All the traits you brought up are very well characteristics a woman holds dear to her feminity. The point is that our expression of our gender is personal, and while looking towards members of the same gender can help with figuring out where we want to orient that expression, it's delusional to think one can't also gain valuable insight of themselves from the othes' and their expression as well.

Masculinity and control are discussions you have with yourself not something you do for others. I wear sweatpants and comfortable clothing because I am not afraid of others judging me based on "their" definition of masculinity or what "control" should look like in their eyes. I am a real man that defines these things based on my priorities. When I am on a plane on my way to an important meeting I take this time to be comfortable and relax so when the suit goes on I will be well rested and energized. I do agree that if you wear sweatpants 90%+ of the time you probably have some issues you might want to work on but I think the same is true when you only wear fancy "gentleman's" clothing all the time. At that point you're wearing them for the same reason people wear sweatpants, you wear them because you don't feel comfortable otherwise.

@gentlemansgazette like everything, it depends, your question is too open, is it towards my job, where it keeps me on the road and on building sites, where masculinity is completely different to what you would show in a dive bar to what you would show in a classy bar! Now, let's say I go "peacocking" and want to dress up and feel how I want life to see me, then, what do I want to show. Issue is, I don't often get that chance lol. I think the only people who are arguing that classic “stereotypical” masculine traits don’t define masculinity are those who lack those traits and are coping. You don’t have to be 6’+, tall AND have a large frame, AND a deep voice, AND a strong jawline necessarily. But if you don’t have at least some combination of those things you’ll never be considered masculine.

I don't do suits. I am NOT a classic style guy, but I really appreciate those who are. I HATE suits and will do my best to never wear another one. I hate seeing people who wear suits because they feel they have to. They look sloppy, because the attitude is missing. While I HATE wearing suits, I love seeing people wearing suits who want to and know how to. It makes all the difference. My sense of masculinity is such that I am confident even if a bit under dressed. I try to find other ways to buff it back up and make it accessible. I am to the age where I care far less about anyone's snotty attitude than I am about my own sense of style. I dress very 1920's and 1880's. Just depends on the day. It definitely takes confidence to look so different. There are elements I don't observe. I am a denim guy so I predominantly wear denim even though in those eras wool pants would have been much more the proper style. That's where the confidence comes in. I like the historical styles and elements of them. I am not dressing with intention of historical authenticity. My 20's look has a lot of Henley's. I don't do full button ups. I wear my suspenders on top of my other clothes. It's more comfortable but it also causes my style to stand out more. It completes the look. I have bespoke 1880's work shirts. I have a nice linen for dressing a bit more, and some blue ticking for a hardier shirt. The style though is a work shirt. Very blue collar. A nice vest and a good telescope hat though and it dresses up nicely. I used to do historical re-enactments and I have some 18th century shirts and I occasionally wear those too. They get a lot of looks. My level of comfort and confidence in them gets questions, not smirks.

I am very old fashioned. I think a properly masculine man should have a command of several core skills: - be able to make decent money - know how to fight - know how to handle and shoot guns - know how to drive a car - know how to dress properly - know how to navigate social etiquette and social events - know how to make love to a woman properly. If you're at least partly skilled in these you are a well rounded classically masculine man.
