My favorite “case” (non-case) is the Suti magnetic phone back. It’s a magnetically attached silicone backing that gives a little more grip, but leaves all the titanium edges completely exposed. I love case-less phones, but I don’t like the sound and feel of a hard phone resting on or sliding across a hard surface, like a desk. This suti phone back is a flat silicone layer between the back of your phone and the desk, leaving the rest of the phone fully exposed. It also fixes the annoying camera bump wobble.

It never NEEDED one though almost everyone's bought into them over the years. I bought my first iPod touch (2nd gen) new on release. I replaced it with a 4th gen on release and a 6th gen on its release. I replaced that with an iPhone 5 2nd hand and that with an iPhone 12mini which I still have, bought new on release. NONE of these devices have ever had cases! Apart from some really slight scratching on some of them and a nasty scrape on the corner of my iPhone 5 where it fell onto the pavement, none of them have been damaged at all. I've marvelled over this money spinning case marketing lark for years. People say "What a gorgeous look for the new iPhone with the colour matched glass back, sleek edges and beautiful finish - right, now I'll wrap it in rubber so you can't see any of it. Hilarious. 😂 My approach has always been, if I buy an expensive piece of beautifully made electronics then I'm going to take care of it by treating it as though it's an expensive piece of beautifully made electronics. Seems obvious to me. N.B. Not a single one of these above devices have ever needed repairs and neither have my 4 iPads (which also have never had cases and were also undamaged and only lightly scratched when sold/exchanged).

Can’t say too much on the newer iPhones, but my iPhone 12 Pro Max went naked for a year (second year of owning it) and any drops on tile at home at ~3ft or wood would survive just fine. It’s concrete I had to watch out for, because of its rough texture, it would chew up the frame with every single drop. Came to the point where the screen did crack and I used my Apple care + to have it completely swapped out, with $129 fee. Still worth it IMO cause I got to enjoy my phone case-free for a year and got the thing refreshed to new (new screen, new battery) and extended the life of my phone for another two years.

On my current phone since I’ve owned it for four years I’ve actually had a couple different cases after the Otterbox because unfortunately even those ones wear out after 2 years with the plastic edges. I do feel like I still get my money’s worth with those (especially the ones that have built-in screen protectors) but that’s my only knock on those cases, the plastic around the edges is the only weak point where it can tear off over time as I encountered that on the iPhone 6 but the 5S and 4 were better made cases for those phones.

I still use a case. I recently switched to a Casekoo Magic Stand case which I really like! I love how they implemented the built in (ring) stand that folds out when you need it and then folds into a groove when you’re not using it so it’s flush with the back of the case and essentially out of the way. The case itself is fairly slim and sleek but still offers high grade protection. 16 foot drop rating. Air cushions in the corners, shock absorption material around the edges. I don’t like to have any scratches or dings, or god forbid a broken screen or back. So I prefer to use a case, to be on the safe side. But I feel like with the latest iPhones you could probably get by without a case if you wanted to. Especially if you’re generally careful with your phone and don’t tend to drop it anyhow. So the main reasons I continue to use a case, really, are for the built-in magnetic stand so I can easily prop my phone up anywhere for watching video and FaceTime and reading the news or books hands free. And then also because I feel like the phone is easier to hold, especially when playing games and it lays flat on a table without wobbling due to the huge camera bump. 😂

The first two minutes of this video demonstrate why I think a case is essential. You talk about how often you drop it because it is so slippery. I always put a case on a phone before I even leave the store. I rarely drop a phone because the case is easy and comfortable to hold. The naked phone has uncomfortably sharp edges. For me, it is a matter of personal comfort and when I trade up to a new model, I always get full trade in value because it still looks brand new.

@@seawaterr okay dawg. Don’t know what to tell you. I got a whole ass girlfriend and brother who would sit and tell you the same thing I just said. My phone got ran over by a car, in the middle of the concrete street, and my phone survived. I’m sorry you didn’t have the same experience. I also skate. I WAS skating. I ran a bit and hopped on my skateboard and my phone fell out of my pocket ( I didn’t realize it yet ) but two seconds passed and I went to get my phone and magically it’s gone and in the street and as I go to get it, a car turned right and passed and drives over my phone. And it survived. I feel like with a case it would have taken more damage.

I had no case since iPhone 4, but that first phone shattered only a 2 days when it was new. That may have put my brain to be careful on the phones ever since. I did put case part time on 12 pro max and 14 pro, because I didn’t like the corners and used them a lot on videos outdoors. I think I will go back no case in a 16 pro.
@christeder2 ай бұрын
Short answer YES. But no need for these ultra thick cases. There are slim versions. Helps to avoid scratches on the side + helps with the grip. Even if you have AppleCare you still pay some extra fees. More helpful for the screen but probably not for scratches or dents
@MikeDold2 ай бұрын
I’ve had every single iPhone since the original, and started going caseless around the iPhone 4 I believe, and have no plans to ever change that. Also the only iPhone I have ever damaged in all those years was ironically the first original iPhone while I was at a party lol.
@t.breeze8659Ай бұрын
A screen protector doesn’t change the feel or aesthetic. On my iPhone 15 pro max, I rock a minimalist case that covers the corners and camera bump but leaves the titanium exposed on sides and top. Back and Front glass have glass screen protectors. To the point of the video though, the phone it self is more durable than previous years’ models

I did that with every phone i've had. Never made it more than a month and my iphone 13 mini was less than a week. *800 dollars to fix, moved back to android instead. I am still caseless and the Motorola ThinkPhone has been bulletproof for over a year. I would highly recommend it if you hate phone cases.

I have a case on my phone not because I'm clumsy. It is to protect it from outside variables. Those variables include, but aren't limited to; someone bumping into you, someone nudging the table your phone is sitting on, someone placing something on top of your phone because they didn't see it, etc. It's not me... it's the outside world.
@lakerskid2013Ай бұрын
Exactly, anything is possible. If the case doesn’t come with a built-in screen protector then it’s fairly cheap to buy a 3-pack of those. Although I bought an Otterbox case for the iPhone 15 I’m getting (upgrading majorly from an 8 Plus) it didn’t come with the built-in protector so I decided to get not only screen protectors to put on the phone but even camera lens protectors as well. I am all about protecting my valuables and keeping them safe for as long as I need them which also in turn means that by the time I move on I could get even decent resale value.
@susanmeredith49572 ай бұрын
I usually get a clear case. Otterbox mag safe case is pretty thin and can still see phone. I’ve seen plenty of cracked screens (not mine) and scratched cases.

I always get shocked reactions when people see my iPhone 13 Pro Max and 14 Pro Max without a case. It constantly hits the ground. They do perfectly fine. I did have protective glass on both for a long time, but removed that recently.
@ttrotary72 ай бұрын
You still need a case for two reasons. One, it's way too slippery. Two, the camera bump makes it wobble on a table.
@celthric382 ай бұрын
When I go caseless from time to time, I use a magnetic wallet to somehow lift the cameras off the table.

I’ve been always using a screen protector and use a case outside of home but caseless at home. You start to get used to it but people sign on mine for work and I don’t trust them not to drop
@marlao23172 ай бұрын
If you're going vaseline, it's useful to add some grips to it, which reduces drops. Personally I like using gaffer tape, since it doesn't leave any residue, and it's so thin that it doesn't interfere with MagSafe.

What I would like to see, is phone manufacturers make the outer surface of the phone easily replaceable & affordable. They should make the guts of the phone modular so that with a few screws or easy snap mounts the innards can be removed, and placed inside a new outer body. This would essentially make the case market switch to a modular shell market, and both OEM & aftermarket shell producers could enjoy a competitive market where creative colors and designs could flourish, just like the phone case market does today. This would allow phones to be a good amount smaller, and users could put the phone through its paces & not need a bulky case making it bigger than it needs to be, and not need to worry about it if a perfectly beautiful exterior could be replaced at anytime, quickly & affordably. I think this is how the future of phones SHOULD evolve into, and it would be a much better experience that would offer great protection and peace of mind & a better solution for everyone.

I’ve always used a case and am super careful with my handsets. Why? When it comes time to change handsets a perfect undamaged handset is worth £100 whilst a dropped/dinged/scratched handset is worth £80. Looking after your handset pays no dividend. (I have insurance so any significant damage is repaired/replaced as the contract goes along)

I took my iPhone 14 Pro Max to Apple last week to have it checked out - issue was iOS 18 beta. But the tech commented on how my phone looked brand new - it does. I have about 10 cases and keep protective glass on the screen. I always sell mine and get top dollar for them. Do what works for you. I'll take the ROI on mine! I do the same for my (Ultra2) Watch!

I only use an iPhone case and screen protector on iPhone 4. That is my first iPhone , smartphone I owned. Later iPhone 6 I never use any case or screen protector likewise for Iphone 7 plus and now base iPhone 15. There are obviously some pro and cons come using " Naked ". One thing I noticed the " coating on iPhone 15 seem wear off faster than iPhone 7 plus " Which you know we daily will wipe the phone screen as our fingers got stains etc , dust . Surely daily you will wipe the screen once a while.

But there's also Apple Care+. So $50 to $100, and you get an refurb, from what I've heard, if there is any serious damage. I've thankfully not needed to use it prior to upgrading from an SE to the 15.

I am pretty careful with my 15 Pro Max, but have also gone mostly caseless since new. I do put a case on if I’m going anywhere the phone will be out a lot, like walks or similar. It has done really well, and also no screen protector - not for feel, but for reflection and clarity differences. A screen protector ruins the quality of the display and has so many more reflections. Always feel that a case spoils the feeling of a device.

I’m pretty careful and have rarely ever dropped my device, plus I invest in Apple Care. That being said, I always use cases (preferably thin, minimalist ones) mainly for esthetic and comfort reasons. I don’t think that the “naked” phone feels as good in my hands, and some cases actually enhance the phone’s look, or at least make it look a bit more unique. A case of your choosing is the simplest way to customize your device, and I usually have several cases that I swap between depending on my mood.
