We were called to help this lovely girl and she really was lovely, I had a blast working with her.
Sadly this lady has been failed by several trainers when it comes to her dogs reactivity and some of the advice she’s been given has been dam right shocking.
She’s a nervy but excitable girl at the same time and this little cocktail causes her to react to other dogs.
We got her off the harness, a tool advised by another trainer, even though the dog does not like it and we put her on a slip lead. We made sure she was walking nicely, credit to the owner as she had already basically achieved this then we added in some dogs.
This dog was desperately lacking some discipline and the owner despite all the trainers she’s had, not one trainer had shown her how to correct her dog when she loses her mind. This has resulted in the owner falling over, being bitten when her dog redirects, as she’s throwing food on the floor to try and break her dogs focus or trying to drag her dog away.
We used simple leash corrections when the dog lost her mind to bring her back down and we used tonnes of positive reinforcement when she made awesome choices. We worked in changing her emotional response to other dogs, not through trickery, but by clear and concise a communication.
Sadly the most common thing missing from most households I go to is discipline. We are being programmed by organisations such as the KC to believe we don’t need to correct dogs and everything must be fixed with purely positive training. This is spreading and more and more trainers are cropping up Training this way and dogs and owners are being failed everywhere.
In this video we was not harsh with the dog, but we did correct her and it snapped her out of her reactive state and helped her calm down, something the owner had never seen from her dog outside.
As much as we can try to keep dogs under the threshold so they don’t explode, that’s not reality, unfortunately we live in a society where we have a lot of irresponsible dog owners letting off lead dogs run over to on lead dogs, we also need to remember that we share the streets with other dog walkers so if we don’t teach the owners how to handle these situations when the dog goes over the threshold, disaster can happen and it has happened to this lady.
This is not class room training, this is real world dog training where real life situations happen.
