Growing up we were always told these berries were poisonous, I cannot believe I was told a fib. Ha Ha. Thanks for setting me straight, all those years lost on such a resource in Newfoundland. Looks yummy.

This is wonderful Bonita! I just wish I could smell and taste it! My mother used to make dogberry jam and my grandparents the wine.. my mother also made Squashberry jam, was that ever delicious too. Of course along with the gallons of bakeapples and partridge berries we picked in the woods ever year as I child I hated being dragged in the woods. Now Id love to be able to go back .. lovely seeing you cook these recipies. Too bad no dogberrys grow in Ontario.

I loved your message and I'm glad your Mom made jams from the dogberries, and I loved that your grandparents made dogberry wine. Thats what my Dad would make and by the time christmas came the wine would be prefect, It's to bad there is no dogberries in Ontario our trees here in Newfoundland is so full everywhere. My husband loved picking these berries its his new favourite berry, because he don't like picking berries. :) Thanks again for your message. Bonita

Awesome! I found an apple-dogberry sauce recipe recently that I can't wait to try! I feel like I'm the only one who likes dogberries straight from the tree, though.

That is so wonderful, having them straight from the tree is nice and sour. Having them in a dogberry jelly is so lovely, the jelly goes well with cream cheese and crackers and toast. Apple dogberry sauce sounds lovely as well, the forgotten berry. Enjoy and thank you for stopping by. :) Bonita

Thanks for the video, I kept thinking there must be something I could do with all those berries in the tree in front of my house ever since I moved there! People think its toxic but I read they have something similar in Russia and that they made somekind of jam out of it. So I’m glad I was able to find your recipe. I love when I can use stuff that nobody bother to pay attention to and make something useful out of it:) Now I only need to figure out what to do with those weird tiny cherries that are super bitter in my backyard Xp

Hi and thank you for your message and for visiting my channel, years ago people made dogberry wine out of those little dogberries. I'm much like you if it is in my garden there must be something i can make from them. They are also good for the birds all winter long on your trees, the little bitter cherries on your tree is chuck cherries and you can make a jelly out of them too. I don't have a video yet but maybe someday. Have a lovely day. Bonita

I am Swedish and we make jelly out of them as well. Amazing to use with roasts and game as a condiment. Skip the other fruits for this though as you will want a little bitterness and tartness but except for that the recipe here seems identical to one my mother would use.

Hi Lorraine the recipe is posted above but I will share a copy for you, thank you for your message and for visiting my channel. :) Bonita 6 Cups Dogberries 6 Cups Water 2 Small Red Apples 2 Chucks Fresh Ginger 1/2 Navel Orange in wedges 3/4 Cup Sugar to every one cup juice Method: You Will Need: Large saucepan, strainer, cheese cloth, 3 or 4 Small Mason Jars Methed: Pick fresh dogberries then clean and wash in cold water, measure six cups. Add dogberries to a large saucepan, then add cold water boil on medium heat. When dogberries start to boil add fresh ginger and orange wedges. Cook for 45 minutes stirring occasionally, then add apples wedges for the last 15 minutes. Do Not Mash Fruit and berries. After the hour is up remove saucepan from heat. Place cheese cloth over a strainer and pour all liquid and berries through it, until all liquid is out. Pour liquid back into the saucepan by measuring the amount of liquid. Then put saucepan back on the stove and start to boil, then after boiling have started add for every 1 cup of liquid you will add 3/4 cup of sugar. Bring liquid to a boil on medium heat, stirring the sugar until all combined. Stirring and removing any foam away from the sides during the 15 minutes, after boiling for 15 minutes dip the scoop in juice if the juice runs off cook for another 5 minutes but if it jells remove from heat. Have your mason jars all sterilized in a water bath for 30 minutes the water only part ways up the bottles. Remove jars while hot pour dogberry juice in each jar cleaning around the rims then put the lids and tops on finger tight. Put jars back in water bath and boil for 10 minutes, then remove from heat put on the counter top. Keep at room temperature over night, check each jar to confirm each jar is sealed. Label and date each jar.

These are mountain ash berries here in BC. No one knows that if you either boil or freeze the berries it makes them edible.

Yes I heard that name before and the berries are sour but when cooked they are very tasty and the colour is so pretty. Bonita

My great-grandfather on my maternal side used to made dogberry wine, I would have liked to have tried it, but knowing how dogberries taste I'm convinced that there's no way it or your dogberry jelly could taste good, no offense! We had a big dogberry tree in the yard of our house growing up, and every year I would convince myself that there's no way they could taste as bad as I remember -- nope! They're just so biter. Great video as always. I would like to try it, but I'm very very skeptical lol. Edit: Regarding the ginger, would powdered ginger suffice?

Yes it's so bitter , the birds won't touch here it grows all over the place , I will be picking for my floral arrangement

So is dogberry the same as dogwood berry? Don’t want to poison myself eh!

Hi Catherine, Thank you for stopping by, Dogberry is from a large tree, they are a bright orange and sour. I don't think they are the same. You can google Newfoundland wild berries and it will show you all of them. Have a lovely day,! Bonita

@@lorettaburt908 Oh my I'm sorry I didn't mean that as any disrespect, I asked the question because I've had so many people say they have never heard of dogberry jelly before only dogberry wine. I didn't laugh at you only the question, sometimes when you squeeze the berries or cloth it makes the juice cloudy and I like to let it drain naturally. I also call dogberries the forgotten berry because the trees are full around our parts and most people just keep them there for the birds over the winter, of course thats great too. Thank you so much for following up with me and for the lovely compliment about being young. :) Bonita
