I gave this exact advice to a puppy buyer of mine, when they were about to bring home a newborn to their self assured, kinda prone to resource guarding doggy. This is now 15 years ago and honestly I knew much less then than I do know about dogs, but this one I felt sure about. They did the "respect the baby's space" 100% for the first two weeks and for the rest of his life that dog had so much respect for that little boy. The boy's toys could be scattered all over the floor and the dog would go and carefully pick out the one dog toy among all the boy's toys. Magical.
