Susan… can you make a show about how to help a young puppy to recover after it has been attacked by other dogs and has now become fearful and slightly reactive in the presence of any dog?

I'd also recommend # 167, # 168, and # 169 if you want even more info. While it's more focused on how to manage your training sessions, it's easy to generalize the advice for real world training once you are ready for that step.

The recommendation to journal made my geeky little heart so happy! 😂 When I'm interested in something, I go at it 100% and hyperfocus on details that can make me better at the thing I've commited myself to. 😊

Love that, the more details you can include the better you'll be able to understand what you're seeing in your dog 🤩

My dog looks for a deflated ball we leave in the yard to thrash around when the neighbour’s dog rushes the fence when we are playing - where are we in the regulation ladder? She is definitely redirecting her arousal onto the toy and will absolutely come away to tug with me. This podcast series on the journey to self regulation is GOLD! Cannot wait for the third in the series!!!!!! Thank you Susan ❤

❤ This podcast! During our walk this morning Min showed me there was a squirrel 6 feet away from us holding and munching a snack. She glanced at the squirrel, looked at me which got reinforced by my giving her permission to go scent (sniff) a tree near us. Thank you for your awesome programs ❤

Thanks for posting this. I've had difficulties self-regulating lately due to stress and this is a good reminder for both me and how to talk to my clients about what's going on with their dogs since I live somewhere where leash reactivity is a major problem.

Aloha Susan, I am getting a new puppy on Wednesday and have prepared by watching your series…. I love your approach to dog training - kind, clear, FUN, empathetic and respectful. My question is how do I make sure he is socialized properly before he is vaccinated? Thank you and bless you. In your good work! Catherine Honolulu, HI😊

Great work, I really appreciate you addressing the delusion trainers and owners have with redirection teaching the dog to ignore things that might make them reactive or aggressive. Most people think a band aid will fix the problem but it’s not true.

Hi! Do you have a video or recommendations for stress pooping in the house due to separation anxiety? I have a 3.5 year old rescue Bouvier (I’ve had her for three months) who is lovely in every other way but is having a hard time with this. We have made some progress lately, and have done some obedience training for fine tuning and bonding, but I am eager for your take on this. Sorry if I have missed something, I am new to your channel/pod. We are working on calming and breathing to begin some self regulation. Many thanks for any support you might offer. PS This is my second Bouv.

Thanks for this video! The timing on this could not be better. Our dog loves to go outside and play (fetch with a frisbee being his addiction). We noticed that at times he would have very hard time calming down from that activity. We decided to take him outside with NO toys and the results were terrifying. Turns out he had no idea what to do without a toy and began to start running at and jumping up at us and play biting (an attempt to play). I haven't seem him do that since he was a puppy. We are definetely in a over co-regulation situation and he is lacking the skills to regulate himself.

Love all these recent videos!! So excited to see Susan's perspective on dogs whose baselines are more anxious/fearful. I'm currently on a journey to try to heal my 5 month old's lungey/barkey behavior and not manage it and craving more of Susan's perspectives on healing "reactivity"!

I’ve got a unusual Chihuahua mix. He’s so calm, and, like you said, he 1:25 doesn’t care. He’s the least reactive dog I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I’ve taken him to a small dog meet up twice, the second time he actually sniffed another little dogs neck! Who knows, maybe they’ll be friends someday😂
@SSS-sd1cf Жыл бұрын
I do notice that my dog always needs quite some time to calm down again when just coming home from the walk which is very exciting for him. I am not sure but I wonder if it's related to self regulation. I would play some more 'quite' games with him (games involve sniffing) or give him a Kong to play with. It helps most of the time.❤ Note: I also notice that to help my dog to self regulate, it's also important to do some self regualation with myself. My dog reacts to cats so whenever I see cats I get very nervous. What I do to help myself is to say, 'Hi, cat, hi (my dog's name)' when I see a cat to relax myself first, and then walk quitely away from the cat and give my dog a cookie when he looks at me.

I've been adopting crazier and crazier dogs over the years. My newest dog is just the most triggered , angry little thing. She thinks she's so big and tough but she's very loving towards us. I don't know how to calm her down because I've always had super chill dogs.

Fantastic video, I have it on my rewatch list! Does anybody else do serious journaling, and are there any best practices? I do it for my high energy BC who has different phases or nervousness and calmness and let ChatGPT check for patterns: Here is how I am structuring it for the moment. I enter: - state of the dog (nervous, ok, relaxed, or zen) - activities (eg obedience outdoors, or tricks indoors) - activity type (eg unstructured vs structured, high mental stimulation, etc) - weather data (generated by ChatGPT) - food (I left it out for the moment as I could not detect any patterns) ChatGPT could detect some insightful correlations so far, but I am still trying to identify the likely causes for the phases. Does anybody else have some experience in that regard?

I have a 5 month old puppy that just started to react to any change in the environment….such as a trash bag sitting on the floor in the kitchen ( just took out of container to take outside) she will bark at it. If I have something sitting on my dresser that wasn’t there the day before like a roll of paper towels…she will bark at it…to be truthful I have OCD so most of the time things have their place but she seems to have some OCD because anything …even things I wouldn’t think a dog would notice…she will react to. How I handle it is to pick it up basically show her it doesn’t eat me and slowly let her have a chance to check it out without sticking it in her face. Is this normal for pups to react to new things in the environment? Thanks I love your podcasts❣️ As always thank you for sharing😊kim

My 1.5 year old German Shepherd doesn’t lose it around new people. But he is fearful. When we walk past people in Tractor Supply or the feed store, he hides behind me. And if someone talks to him, he runs backwards and I have to go with him, or else he’ll slip his collar. Any tips to get him to brave up?

I’m the elementary school parent with 2 kids. 1 kid is an overachiever. The other has behavior issues. I raised both dogs the same way. I can’t regulate my OWN emotions (or focus, or back a car into a parking space). Not sure how to teach something I don’t know. Like “new math”.

Is a dog who sucks on Blankets and pillows dysregulation? And I have one dog who does it and it seems like he is doing it when he is happy and calm but like he is soothing himself a relaxation. And other dog gets all hyper and sucks on blanket or pillows then scrunches them up and jumps them.
