Don’t forget, spray it all over wiring bundles and if a fire occurs, this guy will remind you of the “entertainment only clause” somewhere written after his schtick. Remember, it’s all fun and games until something goes wrong and then and only then, will someone be specific and take care about what they said or didn’t say. There’s no telling about how much bad advice has ruined equipment, and/or caused injuries……. This morning my neighbors BMW X5 had a really bad squeaking sound coming from the front right suspension. I started spraying one thing at a time with WD-40 and moving it up and down by the fender. I started from the bottom at the control arms and bushings and worked up. I finally sprayed the top of the strut tower and viola, no more squeaking. Everything looks good as far as I can see, just have to see if it comes back. WD-40 works like a charm as a diagnostic tool. Thanks for all the info Scotty. I really like your channel.

Thanks Scotty love your videos you’ve helped me so much never been a mechanic don’t know much about cars but you have help me I spent over $1,900in repairs on my 2007 Ford Taurus I paid 600$ for and I started watching your videos and learning a lot it helps me diagnose the problem so the auto shop doesn’t rip me off anymore! I’ve had 3 of your videos help me out with small fixes that the shop was telling me was not gonna be worth doing to the car because of the year of the vehicle telling me $2000 for a cleaning of my valves and some type of flushing and watch some of your videos and solved the problem for $160! Every car shop I go to because I don’t know a lot about cars they try to rip me off thanks for your videos please keep making them
@Hfsdhjf

I have the opposite problem! The shops don't tell me what needs to be changed in my car, and when they do, I assume they are trying to rip me off. I then end up driving in an unsafe car that breaks, when doing the simple repair the shop suggested would have saved my vehicle and maybe my life.

Scotty, Great video again but I saw something that made me cringe; petroleum-based lubricants (like WD-40) eat away the rubber, causing the rubber to weaken and fail sooner than normal. Better to use a Teflon or Silicone base lubricants on rubber and other flexible seals.

Don't spray WD-40 on bearings and grease points, that thing will dissolve and clear away the grease. It's not a great lubricant either, it'll evaporate fairly quickly. I use it to clean the chain, crank and cassette of my road bike to then lubricate it again using the appropriate oil, and also to clean wheel bearings when I'm rebuilding them.

For electrical items better use Contact Cleaner which doesn't leave a sheen of oil. WD-40 is also acting as a lubricant so it'll leave some oil behind which would reduce the insulation between electrical parts.

Yessir! Rocket Chemical of San Diego got their water dispersant right on the 40th try. The salt air in the coastal area was a great testing ground. The aerospace industry jumped on the stuff and it proved its worth over time. WD-40 is good for door hinges and also hood, trunk and rear hatch hinges. If you spray the hinges periodically it prevents them from squeaking when you open and close the door and it prevents the hinges from wearing out prematurely to where the door can become loose and not close correctly. Also, periodically spray it into door locks and the ignition switch to keep them from wearing out or sticking.
@TheSimoc
@TheSimoc Жыл бұрын
While better than nothing for hinges, WD-40 is actually notoriously bad lubricant in long term. It initially lubricates indeed, but it soon dries up into rather non-lubricating gunk. It is not that much an issue in hinges and other parts that are not anyhow prone to sticking, but in lock cylinders for example, where small parts should be able to move by relatively weak spring forces, or in spring-loaded electrical contacts, WD-40 usually causes more problems than it solves. Its intended usage is to repel moisture and initially lubricate to unstick stuck parts, where it works well with its good penetrating properties. It also makes good corrosion protection, and is alright in installations not moving in normal operation, such as bolts and nuts, and screw or crimp electrical joints. But in mechanisms moving in normal operation, you need a better lubricant. Multi-purpose oils, silicon oils, greases, and purpose-specific lubricants are the proper choices, depending on purpose.

I was watching one of your videos yesterday and saw you tapping on the dash to get the heater fan to start working for a little while longer. Anyways, today when I started my car, the dash lights were off and wouldn't come on. So, I drove to work and got the job done and on my way home it was eerie driving with no gauges. For some reason I remembered you smacking the dash, and I thought what the hell, it's worth a try. I lightly tapped at first and they flickered. I tapped again and the right side came on. Then started tapping the left side and it came on, but then the right side went out again. I continued tapping until they were back on again. Anyways, thanks for the idea 😊

Good video ! i Love Wd-40 ! i Have been using it since 1979 or earlier. its awesome to keep stuff from rusting. i used it on Kawasaki Jet skis at a dealership i worked at as a young mechanic. It was a God send to taking Saltwater jetskis apart. i used to Spray the Entire Boat Down from Bow to stern inside & outside. No Salt deposits ever ! Engines come apart easy ! i would use Gallons of the stuff. spray entire engines down. Wonderful stuff ! after 10 years of spraying down the same ski , metal was impregnated with Wd-40. Not one sign of Rust ever on a Salt water jet ski. One thing though , Do NOT spray at a Greasy area that is supposed to keep grease there. it WILL Wash away & dissolve grease from Ball joints. Do NOT SPRAY Directly into a Ball Joint, it could ruin it. Its Great For Doors in your House that squeak , spray on squeaky hinges , Front door where u put the Key in. Works Wonderfully ! Door Hinges in car doors, Spray in Key hole in door. Works awesome. a few blasts in door key hole ,put key in and out , a few more blasts , and key goes in & out like a dream. Enjoy !

When trying to pinpoint a suspension noise with WD-40, spray 1/2 the things you are unsure about. You might start by spraying the left side. If the noise goes away, wait until it comes back then spray 1/2 the left side. If the noise does not go away, you know it is in the other half of the left side. So spray half of the half. Etc.

WD40 is highly flammable without the straw inserted into the nozzle. As a kid I used to use a lighter and make a blow torch with it. I assume it’s because it’s more of a liquid with the straw in it as opposed to an aerosol without the straw.

Probably more aerosol, but also in the old days WD-40 used propane as a propellant in the cans. That was a lot more flammable than today's mix.

PB Blaster is the best to loosen stuck or rusted stuff, but it's not a good long term lubricant. WD-40 isn't either. Gunsmith call WD-40 the money maker because it attracts dust and powder residue and leaves them in need of a professional cleaning.

Nicolas Roman From Wikipedia “According to Iris Engstrand, a historian of San Diego and California history at the University of San Diego, Iver Norman Lawson invented the formula, while the WD-40 company website and other books and newspapers credit Norman Larsen. According to Engstrand, "Lawson was acknowledged at the time, but his name later became confused with company president Norman B. Larsen. “WD-40" is abbreviated from the term "Water Displacement, 40th formula", suggesting it was the result of the 40th attempt to create the product. The spray, composed of various hydrocarbons, was originally designed to be used by Convair to protect the outer skin of the Atlas missile from rust and corrosion. This outer skin also functioned as the outer wall of the missile's paper-thin fuel balloon tanks, which were so fragile that, when empty, they had to be kept inflated with nitrogen to prevent them from collapsing...... In Engstrand's account, it was Iver Norman Lawson who came up with the water-displacing mixture after working at home, and turned it over to the Rocket Chemical Company for the sum of $500, which today (2019) is about $4,600. It was Norman Larsen, president of the company, who had the idea of packaging it in aerosol cans and marketed it in this way.” 👍🏻

WD-40 used to be highly flammable before because it used propane as the propellant, they changed it to CO2 now and so it tends to not let the oil component of the chemical catch fire, but if you aerosol it, it burns really well.

In the college dorm rooms kids would shoot a fireball of WD40 under ones dorm room door as a prank. OR tape up a 9x12 envelope with duct tape and fill it up with shaving cream. Hi Scotty, I truly love your videos, your blend of goofy humor and insight into cars has such variance from those who take themselves too seriously. My question is one of Maintenance. I have a 2015 Mazda 3 GT.. It has been a wonderful car(and I have owned some clunkers, so I KNOW). I currently have 65,000 miles on it and change the oil(with synthetic as required by my warranty) every 7500 miles. I have not done anything else to it except brakes, tires, and wiper blades. I am looking to give it a little tlc.. Transmission fluid and filter, air filter and ??????? That is my question, what would you recommend to keep things as close to new as possible.. It is the 2.5 liter model, but I think there are a lot of us out here with newer cars, that are well built(BY THE JAPANESE!!! I had to fight with 3 dealers to make sure I got a Japanese made one and not a Mexican made one), and want to do preventive maintenance on a budget without necessarily following the dealers playbook. Tx in advance..
