I said to a friend of mine, living in northern sweden is like living in two different countries, one Country is like similar to Siberia the other southern france in the summer. Northern Swedish winters are no joke, makes me understand why the Vikings left raiding and pillaging other surrounding Countries.

Make sure you guys are taking your vitamin D supplements in the winter. The lack of sunlight makes it necessary to take them or you may feel depressed, tired and low on energy.

In this area (scandinavia) we have realy light skin - due to inheritance! We will catch up in vitamin d very fast already already in mars or april! ;-) Later in summer (july-sept) the north gets less uv due to thicker ozon layer and prevents our light vulnerable skin. :-)Thanks again nature!

If you cut down and split a tree in the spring, it is unfortunately not dry enough for the coming winter ... but the winter after. It may be possible to burn, but still contains a lot of water and gives poor heat yield. The combustion temperature will be low and you risk tar and a lot of soot in the chimney. Maybe instead of wood, you should invest in heat pellets that have more energy ..

Pellets may burn too hot and ruin the furnace. You need to be careful if you are burning pellets in a fireplace not designed for them.

It takes almost two years from tree to firewood - it needs to dry properly.

Since you don't have the proper equipment to deal with wood in an effective manner I'd suggest you buy some firewood instead. It's usually 300-500 kr per kubic meter. Its really not worth it to spend so much time cutting wood when it's so fast and efficient for those who's got the equipment. The time you save you can pick cloudberries (and even sell the berries if you want to make up for the money lost on firewood). Picking cloudberries is hard work but so much more satisfying than chopping splitting and stacking firewood. Regarding the chainsaw. Use protective trousers. They could save your life since you're far from a hospital!
@tarjatuhkanen7094

I fully agree, no insurance will cover anything if you don't have protective gear when using chainsaw. Also note that if you fall down trees it will take a long time for them to dry enough to be efficient in heating. I would suggest you start looking to buying firewood for next winter.. You can also find longer "logs" that would be dry enough for your to chop them and thus save some money. I would suggest you start asking around now and getting some when ever you have the time and money. You don't need to get it all at once so the task ahead and the money spent don't feel so overwhelming.

@@tarjatuhkanen7094 last summer I was stupid enough to use a chainsaw where the chain didn't stop at idle. One second of thoughtlessness resulted in a 15 cm and 3 cm deep cut in my thigh. Luckily only cutting in to muscles and no veins. Since then I've always been using the protective trousers that stops the chain i a fraction of a second.

@@davskol Oh how scary. Also proper boots with steel enforcement are needed and one must not forget the helmet with the screen in front to avoid any piece of wood getting into your eyes/on your face. Could save your eyesight, foot, life. Cheapest insurance is to use the right wear.

A few tip from Norway: Isolate house: put stuff/covers/sields in front of windows. Keep 10cm of snow on roof for isolation. Anything that stops or slows the wind from blowing on your house will slow down heat from escaping your house, get a better fireplace that extracts more of the heat from what you throw into it. Get a propane heater. Always wool. Heat when you need. You can probably get wood/ved delivered. Good luck!

@@NaomiandJack I’ve noticed in some of your videos this winter, that there is a large piece of the roof with no snow on it. That’s where a lot of the heat leaks out from your house. If you are interested in improving isolation, I believe it might be a good idea to look at the attic first. Edit: perhaps it’s already sorted with the sheer amount of snow, eventually covering and isolating the roof.

Forgot to write this yesterday: I really like your openness and story of the house and living in sweden. I've tried to perfect/optimize my woodburning.. some parts of it is that i always dry my woods inside the house for abour two weeks before burning. I also stack up enouth inside burnchamber so i can reach extra high temperature. After i get the temperature high enough, i can turn down the lower air inlet so it does not blow all the heat out and into pipe. My fire stove is a clean burning, which also has upper airintake in the burnchamber that burns off unburned stuff. My burning with high temperature does not produce a lot of smoke. I hear the heat crank the metal and the flames are dancing like an aurora in the sky inside of the glass door of the burnchamber. Thats when i get it right. I often strugge a bit every start of the winter to get it perfect.. and 4-5 wood pieces gets me a long way when i manage to optimize this proccess..

@@Jonsson474 they definitely have heat escape from their roof, go back and watch the old videos, their neighbors got snow covered roofs. We got "snörasskydd" not sure what that'd be in English, that prevents the snow to slide off in huge chunks all at once, BUT looking around at the houses here in my village during winter, even the roofs that don't got that, typically have snow on them during most part of winter. Can also see on their house that there are spots where the heat is escaping more rapidly. We got two such spots on our own roof that has turned up during the last two winters, something we'll have to look into and sort out soon.

Find a local buy and sell group on facebook and ask who has firewood to sell or ask those you fished with if they know? You can't buy firewood at Jula. Before the summer comes, you must fix mosquito nets to the windows, otherwise it it's not possible to have them open. Fight on! You've been through the worst now. It will only get better next winter you will live there (if you do not give up?) ./ Love from Umeå

Depending how green the wood is re those trees - you have to let freshly cut wood dry out and cure before you can burn it. We let it sit about a year here before we burn it - the dryer it is the more efficiently it burns. Do you burn wood pellets there? They are the most efficient for burning here - similar to the wood blocks.

The bloom is off the rose and I know you guys are working so hard but you may have to start putting together a "to do" list for when the warm weather comes so that repairs and **gulp** expensive purchases can be made to make the property more efficient. Nice to have a Volvo but maybe it's time for a truck you can put a plow on. Purchase an all new heating system. Look into your roof and rebuild some of the outbuildings (I saw where Jack was cutting wood had a tree limb holding up one side 😳). Also why not build a bigger out building and buy wood slowly? You keep saying you are leaving so not sure what direction your lives will take or if you are moving back but now that the reality has set in on what life is like and what is needed, get it done if possible so you can rent your property while you are back in the U.K. Good luck.

I'm sure that you can get alot of useful advice from your neighbors making things easier. Note!!! 2:50 I live in zone 4 40 Km north of Örebro. I only use firewood to heat the house to hot water. Here in zone 4, we use about 13 birches during a winter. I have a modern wood boiler and a modern chimney with 260mm smoke pipe diameter. You have to mix firewood. You may not use more than 40% birch. You have an outdated chimney. Birch forms tar and it can be a chimney fire. You must use 40% deciduous trees and 60% conifers. It is important. Very important otherwise the chimney sweep can close the chimney for you. There are soot powders that you pour on the embers in the wood boiler. It is expensive and difficult to use properly. You live in zone 6 or 7. Then you use about 18 or 20 trees that are about 60 years old and densely grown conifers. Conifers that grow on a field grow too fast and are almost like balsa wood. This requires experience when it comes to felling trees. It is otherwise life threatening. My advice is that you talk to the locals if anyone knows where you can buy a cargo of timber. It's not expensive. If it costs 8 to 10 thousand, it will not be so much per month for an entire winter. You need a real wood splitter (a model called Faxe) and a real woodcut with a 700mm wood blade.

@@NaomiandJack You are welcome! I was a little worried that you would move back to the UK. There is a reason why so few people live in Lapland and it depends on the climate. You tell me that it is very quiet and peaceful. It is just as quiet and peaceful in the provinces of Jämtland, Härjedalen, Medelpad, Dalarna, Värmland and in the Western part of Västmanland (where I live). There are no mountains here but thousands of lakes. My daughter lives with a guy from Australia. He usually goes to a lake and only listens to the hiss when the blood rushes through his ears. He has never experienced such silence before. If you get tired of Lapplan, please do not leave Sweden. We need you! Move south to one of the landscapes I wrote above. There is rock heating, geothermal and air heating. Also heat from Mo (Mo is land covered with only sand and a mixture of sand and some soil). Y ou do not need to use firewood if you move. You have basically moved to southern Alaska. It's the same latitude. Maybe it is possible to use some other form of heat also in Lapland, but it will be long winters anyway. If you move down to zone 4 or 5, you can have a larger selection of plants. Among other things, apple trees. It takes less energy to heat the house. Please stay in Sweden. Bring your whole family here.

Yeh-yeh-yeaaaaay, you are skating. I am in SUPER HOT JAMAICA & summer time is not even here yet. There is volcanic dust all over St. Vincent and the Grenadines even as Covid places many in a state of panic. The climate all ways find a way to beat you down. Kick it back by writing about it, June maybe better.😎🏁

DONT you forage for wood. Look for fallen trees. Must be plenty of wood out there. And you have a chain saw..you need to start in the summer. Or find a log supplier. Last year I burned wood from a construction site. I even used a chop saw to cut it up into brick sized chunks. Nothing wrong with using old wood. It’s better than sending it to land fill. Stay warm... 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜👍

A pellet burner would be a lot easier for you, it's still a bit of storage and hauling involved, but it's definitely less work! Fire wood needs so long to dry properly too, so in that regard it'd be way more convenient. I'm sure there's someone in the area that can convert your current heating system to fit with a pellet burner. It's what was done in our house by the previous owners. By the way, the first two winters are bound to be challenging! I'm from Southern Sweden, and my bf is from up here, despite this we were not prepared (but thought we were lol) for what it'd be like. We ran out of pellets both these winters because we hadn't ordered enough. Such a headache when struggling against the cold and not really knowing what to do.

@@NaomiandJack hi, yeah that we will. We have lived in our house here for 6 years now. Each winter is a bit different, and can provide with unexpected challenges. Like how we got 70cm of fresh snow within 24hours this last one. Not too long after we got another 40cm. Bloody crazy! Man, I was just staring at it in disbelief but at the same time also laughing at it. In a way that amount of snow in such a short time window, taught me an important thing, that I don't actually need to clear off snow from all the areas I typically always have done before. That I can prioritize and everyday life will still work out smoothly. It also taught me to ask for help sooner from neighbors with big machines, instead of always being pigheaded for doing everything myself. In a way winters up here can feel like some sort of insanity, lol, but so far I've always been very happy to be experiencing them. I will say tho, that when I'm standing in the smack center of the latest winter madness? Excessive amounts of cuss words will be used!

Hi Naomi, thank you for sharing your experience of living in the far north (relatively speaking). Have you read Moominland Midwinter? It's part Scandinaviana but at the same time told from the perspective of someone who experiences winter at your latitude for the first time. Love your content 💕💕

Life is full of challenges. Being in a cold environment with minimum access to things makes it much more difficult. Working together with your mate surely strengthens your bond. That is definitely too much snow for me. I moved 2008 to CA from MI and don't miss it at all. I can't even appreciate the snow covered mountains here.

Are you preparing for next winter? This period, April to Midsummer is the period most take care of their firewood for next winter, or better, the next 2+ winters. Talk to neighbors about buying wood localy, about 1000EUR unprocessed should get you through 1 winter. I would probably try to get double that since you have nothing in store. Planning your energy usage is extremely important up here. You do not want to be relying on electrical, it will ruin you financially in Winter. If you dont get wood processed and stacked before Midsummer, it will be to wet to burn this winter, and now you need to find dry processed wood, more expensive. This is also why you want 2+ years stock, ideally you would let it dry a whole year before burning.
