I really do not think you realize the extent of the good you do to all. You are an example, as a family, as a father and a mother, as a lovely daughter, as hard working people who are definetely not waiting for "God to solve my problems", but you are "here I go to do what I have to do to make all this work". You are a fun, nice loving family, it nourishes our souls and wakes the "I am going to work me too" in everyone of us. And then, the results are always so positive and nice, the advise you give Al is sound and interesting, and Gina cooking is so sweet and lovely. I am a chef, and there are so many things I could say to Gina about "do not do this or the other", but her cooking is so clean, simple, matter of fact if you can understand what I mean, so i do not and have never felt tempted to tell her anything. It comes out so nice, and you enjoy it so much... so.... there is nothing to be said but: KEEP ON ENJOY IT ALL!

Hello from Minnesota! Here are somethings on cast iron cookery for you to look for. The Lodge Cast Iron Cookbook (this has bread and biscuits, and muffin recipes in it & Dutch oven stuff), the Lodge Cast Iron Nation Great American Cooking From Coast to Coast, and they have a cookbook for just Dutch oven recipes too but I have been unable to find it. I have a Southern Cast Iron magazine Nov/Dec 2019 which has great holiday recipes including buttery herb rolls. Also a recipe for crabmeat & smoked sweet potato soup. Apparently the sweet potatoes need to be smoked for 2 hrs 30 min to 3 hrs. Have fun! Get messy! Make mistakes! LEARN!!!

Hi. Gina sage is a perennial you can plant it in your flowerbeds. I planted some last year and it's flowering this year. It's a low mounding plant so it's perfect for flowerbeds in the front and this way it won't take space in your raised beds and you can harvest well into the fall.

Grandma always said, "Never put soap in your cast iron pans!" When you clean them, pour a little oil in the pan, add some coarse salt( regular salt if you don't have coarse), and scrub the pan with a paper towel until all cooked bits come off, then rinse off salt, dry the pan, and leave the film of oil on the pan to store it. Your pan will never rust or stick for as long as you own it! I have a pan that is just as non stick as Teflon without the chemicals! Do this with all your cast iron utensils and they will never rust. Look up "How to season cast iron" even if they say "Pre-seasoned"! Good luck, happy gardening and God Bless!

My brother heard a chef on public radio talk about cast iron. Restaurants have to use soap to clean them. He said to wash them, dry, then heat them on the stove to dry them really well and put a tiny bit of oil on them while still hot and rub it in with a paper towel. Just in case you want to use soap.🙂

Good Thursday mornin Moose Crossing ..... You could turn part of that high tunnel into a sweat lodge ~8^) I built one of those little garden tunnels this year over my 4x8 raised bed. By the time I got the melons in, I didn't need any plastic (went from winter to summer). I think I'll get some shade cloth, and try that during the heat of summer/bug season. I can grow radishes in it in the fall this year, and spring (if it shows up) next year. I have those clips that you are using as well, to make everything easy/tight. Your pigs must really like those hens laying eggs all over the place. Maybe you'll find a pile of eggs with a broody hen sittin on them. Have a great day AL, Gina & Olivia.

I'm going to need to get the mesh cover to put over my garden beds to prevent the bugs from eating on the veggies. This past couple of weeks have been terrible with cabbage worms eating at every green leaf in the garden beds. Gina, vast iron pans are awesome to use. Don't let them intimidate you. I've seen a lasagna pan once at the farmers convention. I'm going to look for it next weekend because the convention is next weekend. Great idea making mini meatloaf on the grill using your biscuit pan.

For the sour crout we use a crock and layer cabbage leaves and salt. Ive seen my grandmother fill a 20 gallon crock and not only cabbage but collards as well. A Southern tradition. As they place it in the crock they pack it with a wooden dowel to allow the salt to do its thing, then they use a ceramic weight on top and cover it with cheese cloth.

Always fun watching you guys, especially when Al gets creative in building/repairing a project Watching last video (moving NYC) made me think there must be a way to position the coop next winter so that it’s in one spot, but by moving the netting only you’d get the benefit of two spots being used. You’d not wear out one spot over winter, you’d only be shifting the netting you could do in early spring even with wet ground.

Good morning Al, Gina and Olivia. This question is for Gina. As a female member of a working N.H. farm family, I have followed your channel for some time now. Gina, your transition from working on the outside to working at home , appeared to not be your own choice. How do you feel today about the homestead lifestye? Your cooking segments are welcome, as it shows viewers how you are preparing the foods you grow and raise. I recommend STOCKING UP by the editors of Organic Gardening & Farming. There may be a STOCKING UP II. Features cabbage preservation and much more. My last day of work was March 6th. My school shut down. At first, I was too busy scrambling to stock the pantries for our two farm residences. Once that settled down, it struck me that I was a free agent and could plan my day. I occasionally teach beginner organic gardening to a few students, but I also need to focus on pressing farm projects that were placed on the back burner. There are only three of us here, working a large farm. The boys just cut 1,000 bales of prime hay. 6,000 more to go! The "boys" will be 75 and 72 this year! We are hoping for 22 Hereford calves. 14 so far. Al, you inspired me to build a mini green house this spring that is working splendidly! And Gina, I am now in "The Grove" of being a full time farm wife. The All American pressure canner is in the "ready position". I just made honey/ginger/ rhubarb jam and looking forward to the harvesting season. P.S. Olivia you are also doing a great job of helping out and learning The Good Life! All the best, Diane

Gina (and anyone else reading) best advice we've ever been given for cast iron was to season with avocado oil. It has a higher smoking point and leaves a harder finish. Our cast iron is essentially non-stick.

Hi Gina those cast iron pans are awesome . Just a tip on the potatoes. We put ours in the microwave to partially cook them then make some slits all along the potatoes. I place them on foil add a few slices of butter sprinkle with any spices and some salt finish off with chopped onion then close up the foil. If you don’t microwave them first you’ll jus have to watch them. Ours take about half an hour. God Bless you all!

The "crops" are looking great! Cast iron has a learning curve but once you learn it you will never look back. Cast iron holds heat really well, so once your pan is hot, you can lower your temp. I've never sanded my Lodge pans, but I know many who have. I think that is a personal preference. Plus with cast iron, you can use it on an open fire, your grill and a cook stove. So versatile is cast iron! Supper sure looked yummy!!!

I use a vintage WagnerWare Sidney 1058M cast iron skillet for cornbread. The feral pigs live on conservation woods adjacent to Grand Palm Resorts Community, Venice, Florida. They came over with Desoto in 1700 and now are protected. Sarasota County hires a trapper to trap them when they wander out. They find their own food in the woods.

Wasps are pollinators too. There are options to stop them from building hives in places you don't want, without eliminating them. Even as simple as hanging a paper bag that mimics a hive. They avoid the area because they don't want to encroach on an existing nesting area.

Hey Al. Next time, consider moving the wasp nest. Wasps are a gardeners best friend. Their favorite food is the caterpillars that go after your veggies.

You can aldo look up pics of the moth that gets to them and lays the eggs for the worms. I print out and cut and hang above or on the plant. They are territorial and if a butterfly is on plant they fly by. I have tulle netting on mine.

Every time you show us the inside of the greenhouse, I flash on that old saying, “Be careful what you wish for, for you may just get it”. When I see that raised bed of many zucchini plants, I wonder if you’ve considered how many zucchinis that is capable of producing. Many gardeners only plant 1 seed in 1 hill and they grow enough to make everyone in the tri-state area hate the gardener. I predict you will have enough to fill a medium size dump truck. Enjoy your zucchini bread, muffins, fritters etc etc. 😎👍👏

Suggestion for mowing, after the first pass, turn around and shoot the clippings outward instead of back into the area you are going to mow. It makes for a cleaner cut and isn’t so hard on the mower having to re-cut more and more grass. This is especially true in the heavy areas.

I like that idea putting meat loaf in the muffin tin. Thank you. You could cook up a bunch of them like that and then freeze them for later.

I check garage sales and thrift stores regularly for fair priced cast iron. The older stuff is usually a lot smoother than the newer mass produced stuff. Cooking with the Instant Pot during the hot weather is great, made a great pot roast and veggies yesterday. I also do a lot of grilling or smoking outside year round when conditions aren't bad.

There are ways to control your end vents for automatic temperature control. Heat rises so if you open the vents then that will let the heat out

Gina once you get the hang of it you'll love the cast iron. I highly recommend getting the lodge bread pans. They are slightly smaller but get a couple and most bread recipes cook up amazing in them. In the summer I use my grill nonstop as well as my Cosari air fryer to keep the heat down. Love the biscuit pan, it will be perfect for biscuits, eggs, shortcake, and would be fun to see all the creative uses. If your area is opening up check thrift and antique stores for vintage cast iron. Once restored you'll never use a nonstick pan again.

Hi, probably watched an old clip, but a good simple tasty salad dressing is just, a clove of garlic crushed, the juice of a lemon and salt and pepper. Shake in a jar, it will keep for over 2 weeks in the fridge.

Thank you for sharing the information on the PVC clips. I may try some squash next year and the bug net will keep the squash bugs away. You have a beautiful little farm and are doing such a good job of bringing the pastures back to life.

I use my slow cooker & microwave during the summer. The slow cooker doesn't generate a lot of heat & my microwave vents outside. I don't use the oven during the summer because I'm in Arizona & it was already 80 at 8 am. You can use the slow cooker like an oven on some recipes & the microwave like a stovetop for other recipes.
