You brought back a memory of my first construction job Al. I was framing a wall (the old fashioned way with nails) and the foreman yelled over to me to stop and came over and put a pencil mark at the bottom of my hand. He then sawed off the handle at the mark and told me since I wasn't using the handle to get the leverage for swinging correctly I didn't need the whole handle LOL. He did buy me a new hammer a few days later. I'm so impressed with Gina's shop ability lately I can't praise her enough. Well done Gina !!!

I think it would be a good idea to cut a slot in the right side of the radial arm saw table so you can install an adjustable stop for shorter boards. That way your helper won't have to measure every one. You could also add a tape measure next to the slot, might take a little trial and error to get the measure right.

Are you going to build another feeder for the 2nd lovers outdoor area? You should plant some evergreen trees between the road and goat pasture. Obviously out of goat eating reach. Plant 2 rows close together so as to be a wind/noise break and with 2 rows you can harvest multiple trees a year for treats to goats/chickens/pigs and replant for a continuous supply. Maybe along another fence line plant fruit bushes and fruit trees. You will probably need a hay/grain/storage outer building and the spot between the old goat barn and new workshop would be great if you orient it correctly you could have a continuous paddock system and all 3 buildings would be close enough to connect with either covered walkways or just a longer lean-to roof. I can't wait to see Olivia's family farming/homesteading.

If you drill a hole in the skids from side to side you can use # 9 wire to make a loop to hook a chain to. The eye bolts work but may pull out as the wood ages. Wires pretty cheap too.

As much as your chickens may like those asparagus stems, they would make a delicious asparagus soup. Around here it's pretty darned expensive no matter what time of year. I simply use my vegie peeler to remove the tough outer skin, then simmer with a bit of onion, salt and pepper in chicken stock until tender. You can either blend in your blender or with a stick blender. A tiny bit of cream and a few asparagus tops for garnish, and it's soup! Yumm!

@sharongordanier84964 жыл бұрын
I agree, it looked like the roost was blocked. I can't help but think of my brother's chickens every time I see the New York chicken coop. Can you please check under it for me? My brother's chickens liked to lay eggs under their chicken coop. Tim's chicken coop was on skids. It was fun trying to sweep the eggs out from under it. As for the other chicken coop - greenhouse. The first year, my brother built a similar chicken coop for his chickens. He had hay bales layered 3 high. I do not know how but his chickens hollowed out 2 nests between the 2nd and 3rd layers. It took 2 little girls (4 year old Abby and her sister, 6 year old Amber) to discover their secret hiding place. When we started digging through those hay bales we found eggs hidden all through those bales. They must have been laying them there over a couple of months at least.

Go to your local farm store and buy some Fencing Pliers, it's probably the handiest tool you can have on the farm. Their not just pliers but have a hammer/wire cutter, fence staple puller and some even have a regular screw driver at the end of the pliers handles. Get the best you can as this tool will last a lifetime. Ask the store owner which one is best. Good luck with your work and homestead. Their also good for tightening up fence wire pole to pole.

Hey Al, I've seen the nesting box door being closed, so they might have layed the eggs inside NYC. Maybe a second door opener will solve the problem. I'm excited to see your perfect goat hay feeder too
@DisabledUKPrepper4 жыл бұрын
The hay feeder looks similar to the old designs of sheep feeders we used to get a lot around here. They worked well, and lasted for ages. Of course, most have been replaced by modern metal versions over the years, but I'm just old enough to remember the wooden ones farmers would make themselves in a tried and trusted manner. The main difference is most here were put on metal wheels rather than skids. However, I imagine skids would be better in snow and icy weather. While we don't get the snow here in the UK like you do, we certainly get the rain, and those feeders do the job. Especially as you've put the wider base on, so any spillage will not land in the mud, but it's not too wide the older goats will be standing in it... young kids on the other hand might use that as a playground for a short while. It's quite common to find lambs nestled in the fallen hay at the base, fast asleep. 😉😂 Little Man has certainly settled in with The Big Boys.

Gina, quinoa has to be soaked about an hour, then rinsed thoroughly a few times before it's cooked; otherwise it has a bitter taste due to the saponins. When it is prepared that way, it is delicious and can also be used to make pudding (similar to tapioca).
