Decades ago I visited a petting zoo in Minnesota that had a pond with a tree on a small island. There was a rising suspension bridge from the mainland up to the tree with a small platform at the top of the bridge. Zoo patrons would buy shelled corn that would dump into a bucket and then send the bucket of corn up a pulley line to the platform. As soon as the billy goat heard the corn hit the bucket he would run up the suspension bridge to eat the corn. This was the zoo's most popular attraction.

I like the outdoor feeder as is. If you ever put any larger animals out there, you will need the extra headspace. Your next major build should be a high sided long tunnel with some raised beds for food. But my vote is for whatever makes you all happy. Where is Gina's Soap Shop going to be? Are you allowed a farm stand in your area? What plans do you have for the back pasture and that spring head? Could you build a pond back there? What about fruit tees? Does anything grow besides apples? Just some thoughts.

Hey Al and Gena, I love seeing all the building projects! I've been following you guys since the build start of NYC and man has your homestead came a long way! I haven't seen Rusty and his girls in a little while until this video. Just to give you a little info, I noticed Rusty's comb looks like it's taking on some frost bite. I've been breeding poultry for over 25 years and have used Vaseline on my breeder roosters Combs and wattles to protect them from frost bite. Frost bite on a roosters Comb and wattles does have a significant effect on his fertility, so I just thought I'd mention this to you guys because if I remember correctly you are looking forward to breeding rusty to the girls. He's a handsome young rooster and the girls are laying some truly nice colored eggs! Oh, and the smoke house you guys built is sweet!!.... That's one on my to do list this summer! Looking forward to seeing more projects you all come up with because you have mad carpentry skills! Lol.

You can make the Goat Stop easier to move by fastening an old pair of skis or two to the bottom of the skids. I have used this method to make chicken tractors/coops in the past. Skis will slide easily on grass as well as snow, and can always be found for free.

@denisewilson8367

a friend of mine painted his peg board with glow in the dark white paint. Then he organized his tools the way he wanted them. Then he took and outlined the tool. Removed all the tools & pegs and painted the outline tool area with black paint. when it dried he made a fancy picture frame for the board remounted all the tools over thier shapes. So, when he is working on a project & is done there is no confusion as to where a particular tool is suppose to be hung. Especially if one of his teenagers "borrowed" a tool.

I wish this channel existed like 5 years ago. There was an old man that owned a wood working shop by my work place. He had a ton of good lumber in the building. He would take an 1700 cabinet and copy it exactly for the customer. When he died in his 80's. his family auctioned everything off. All the old saws, lathes, wood, etc went cheap. Mostly for scrap price. If Al could have made the trip, he could of had some nice well taken care of woodworking equipment stuff.

I've been really interested to see how their open air coop is working out this winter. So far it's good. The video where Doug made a perch outside and then perched himself, to show them and they followed him is so funny. If Rusty's comb is frostbit, it may be because the greenhouse holds moisture.

What do you think about getting quail added to your homestead? Also, it might be interesting to add a mating pair of miniature Jersey cows for milk and meat. And perhaps Olivia could raise some angora rabbits. She could brush them everyday and make angora yarn?

Have you thought about building an annex to the workshop or a small building close to the workshop for left over wood and other building supplies? It would put everything in one place so you wouldn't be going around looking under tarps for whatever you need. Just a thought.

Al, you would save a lot of energy during these Winter months if you would load the Mule instead of the sled with firewood to take to the house.

I just read this after putting a similar comment on myself. Goats for milk and cheese, pigs and chickens for meat. Yet...hardly any vegetables. Not a homestead.

It's funny what people view as homesteaders and not. Before green houses were available to pioneers, pioneers that only had the natural growing season weren't homesteading? Interesting.

@@0Hillbilly Al and Gina have not planted anything except a few scraps of salad and a small veg crop. There is no way they are living off the land. Plainly, without a regular supply purchased from a store, they would have no fruit or veg for most of the year. They have nothing canned or preserved for winter except animal products.

@@jimmyjohnstone5878 that may be, but, does that mean they aren't homesteaders? So they aren't self sufficient on vegetables or fruit. That doesn't mean they aren't homesteading, working toward an objective to become more and more self sufficient. I just find it funny at what people find as homesteaders or living off grid.
