What wasn't directly said that I hear is that having patterns of treating your spouse lovingly, and acknowledging that your spouse treat you lovingly in general, helps you to realize that you or they are operating outside of that pattern, which alerts you to a need to stop what's happening and figure out how to de-escalate.

I think the rule about no cell phone on the table brings order especially when there are children, because that's good manners and you have to lead by example, and there can't be one rule for the kids while you are doing the same. How about leaving the table and attend to your phone, which makes it appear real necessary as opposed to sitting on the table flipping through your phone, because in these days of social media, your being on the phone among people especially during family time is just not on.
