Important Update: Dolby Vision behaves differently depending on the source. Dolby recommends the OLED Light to be set at 50 for Dolby Vision content. On Apple TV 4k, if you raise your OLED Light above 50, the black levels can look a bit gray. On the LG built-in Netflix app, the OLED Light behaves differently and actually responds well to raising the OLED Light. There are quirky differences between Dolby Vision sources that will hopefully get worked out soon. Apologies for not covering this in the video. This was brought up by Dustin Carpenter -- the gentleman who left us a respectable comment below.

Thanks for the great review and update Modernwize. Just to add some additional information to your update, the phenomenon you’ve seen with Apple TV and DolbyVision actually effects all external DolbyVision sources. It seems Dolby has identified a bug that can erroneous change black levels in DV sources streamed externally (HDMI and USB) to a display. The good news is that they have identified the problem and developed a software fix. They also stated the solution only needs to be applied to the display’s DV software. The bad news (possibly) is that while Dolby confirmed that they have supplied the fix to TV manufacturers, each TV manufacturer will have to upload it to their own sets as firmware updates. This could cause some sets to receive the fix later than others. Stay tuned!

Actually not sure if this is very recent but if you compare Cinema Home OLED light 50 vs Cinema User OLED light 100 it's the same brightness. RTINGS actually recommended using Cinema Home as far as baseline for accuracy. This is true on my C8.

Listening to professional calibrators at AVSForums, you should keep the default settings for OLED light, brightness and contrast when in Dolby Vision mode. Dynamic contrast should be switched off, since the purpose of that setting is to simulate what Dolby Vision does. The only thing to adjust is the RGB balance.

Isak Öhrlund We have calibrated for the recommended settings and found it to work well if your room only emits 30 Lux of ambient light. Doesn’t work so great for 100-300 lux ambient room environment. We have knowingly, and publicly deviated from recommended settings at every corner, as we have our tvs in normal living rooms with windows, not dark room home theater batcaves. Dolby’s implementation has proven us wrong several times and I’m sure we are outsiders with our preference here, but we have tried most configurations (good and bad). We always encourage others to share their settings and experience. Its all about what you like. Definitely appreciate your input.

Highlights: anything above 80 destroys bright details like clouds for example, which display a gradient of different colors that would be washed out and destroyed as a result of blowing up the white level. Brightness 50-65 is reasonable, anything higher or lower will impact shadow clarity Sharpness: 10 on average (depending on content, but there's no need if what you're watching is HD of higher as you'll be destroying detail to compensate for what you think is "blury" Dynamic contrast: low or avoid! Same issue with highlights and shadow detail. It can destroy clarity and accuracy Color gamut :auto or wide depending on the content you're watching (Extend is also applicable) Color 80-90 (perhaps 60-70 depending on content) increasing this works similarly to contrast; too high and you get bloom and bleeding of colors causing a gradient to seem like a solid, uniform color. Edge enhance: avoid like the plague as you get a halo effect like increasing sharpness would. Gamma: 2.2 or BT.1886 TruMotion: user and dejuddee set to 10 only and nothing else.

I remember reading that the OLED light should only be in the 50-60 range. Can you confirm if this is okay or should I just blast it to 100 too?
@modernwize
@modernwize 6 жыл бұрын
OLED light behaves differently for Dolby Vision than HDR10. OLEad light raises the average picture level. Dolby recommends OLED light to be set to 50. For the built-in LG Netflix app, Dolby Vision OLED light at 50 is too dark in our opinion so we broke away from the Dolby recommendation and moved the OLED light up to 100. Apple TV 4k behaves quite differently than the LG Netflix app; moving the OLED light above 50 made the black levels appear gray, so we have it set to 50 on our Apple TV 4k.

Right now I mainly play overwatch, rocket league, titanfall 2, i plan to play sea of thieves A LOT when it comes out and legend of Zelda breath of the wild. The OLED light setting in DV picture modes is different than SDR and HDR picture modes. In DV picture modes, this setting should be at 50 because it controls the scene APL.
@modernwize
@modernwize 6 жыл бұрын
Good catch. I was attempting to mix general OLED principles into this video with Dolby Vision settings so people wouldn't have to watch multiple videos. I totally forgot to mention the APL factor. The recommendation is in fact, still the same. We prefer OLED Light at 100 even though it doesn't make too much difference above 50. Your comment is greatly appreciated....kind of.
@ahoyskid
@ahoyskid 6 жыл бұрын
setting the OLED Light to 100 is fine, but only for HDR content. Because its dynamic, it only hits 100 in areas that are super duper bright.. e.g a candle in a dark room... the sun... or headlights pointing at the camera. You are basically setting the maximum threshold. NOT overall OLED light.
@ahoyskid
@ahoyskid 6 жыл бұрын
With the exception for HDR gaming of course.. if your HUD is white or any other intense colour you're leaving yourself open to IR or SB. i like HDR gaming OLED light set to 65. I have zero problems.. at night i hit eco mode to save my retinas from HDR annihilation.
@modernwize
@modernwize 6 жыл бұрын
Craig Murray we have deviated from the recommended Oled light settings as we just prefer it a bit higher. It doesn’t make too much of an impact, but the highlights are more pronounced. We photographed the screen at every oled light level, and upon examining our 8k still images of every oled light level. At level 50, the highlights were a bit darker, and some shadow detail was missing. By moving the oled light above 50, some missing shadow detail was retrieved and the highlights were more pronounced. The gamma curve that DV is applying isn’t always to our liking. We appreciate any feedback or tips. Always seeking to improve PQ.
@dcarpenter85
@dcarpenter85 6 жыл бұрын
In the Dolby Vision Cinema picture mode, raising OLED light above 50 does not increase luminosity, it affects the gamma curve. This has a similar effect (increases overall brightness), but you are altering the gamma in a way that is unnatural and losing picture detail in highlights. OLED light at 50 in DV is identical to OLED light at 100 in HDR picture modes.

Love your channel brother. Can I get your opinion. I just bought the c7 65inch. I love it for the most part. The two things I think could be better are motion and upscaling. The Sony a1e is only $500 more now. Do you think the upscaling is noticeable on the Sony? I watch a lot of xfinity cable. Main reason for the tv. Game a few hours a day, rest is streaming & a small percent sports. Would you switch it for the Sony? Thanks you so much
@modernwize
@modernwize 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Ted, thanks for the message. Me personally, I would not switch for the Sony, even if it was cheaper by $500. Upscaling is about the same. Gaming input lag is worse on Sony tvs in general, and the interface and remote is painful to use compared to other tvs. Xfinity is 720p, and will look a little rough on any 4k tv. C7 is a great tv.

@alexyoung5798 6 жыл бұрын
That's because of how they film it, not the settings. 35 mm film will produce that grainy look which some directors consider more cinematic. Personally, I hate it in this 4k, HD era because it can detract from the appeal of the picture on some high end sets but it can also work splendidly like with Dunkirk and other older films converted.

@sloppy2442
@sloppy2442 6 жыл бұрын
Yes that will be fine, just remember to put the tv in stand by (dont switch it off from the plug) and let the tv run its cycle to clear any image retention the tv might leave behind after that then just go about watching whatever you like, dont do it by manual i.e from the settings etc.. the best way to treat your oled well is to plan, i know for a lot of people this can be hard work but write down a schedule of what you will be watching for that day i.e cable tv in the morning, gaming afternoon, night time a movie so that way your varying the content through the day and remember to let the tv run that cycle and you wont have the problem of your tv having a permanent burn in etc..

how is the banding on your c7 and b7? is one worse than the other ? and since there are different degrees of banding what is acceptable and what is not in your opinion? I recently bought a 65 b7 which does have banding which is only noticeable in certain scenes like the one you recommended in your video which was Marco Polo episode 2 14 min mark lmk what you think it is within the return time and I really didn't know if it is bad or better than some panels as if I returned it would I Get a worse panel thank you for your time!
@modernwize
@modernwize 6 жыл бұрын
We never see banding during normal content. We've only seen it on the XBOX One X settings menu, and once when watching ESPN, they randomly used a dark grey motion graphic for a transition. Not a big deal. It never reveals itself. From what you are describing, it sounds like we have similar panels, and I think what we have is far better than dealing with blooming, light bleed, halos and poor viewing angles 100% of the time on an LED TV. But then again, Joey went bald thinking about burn in. Just kidding :D

If you have the time i would love to hear your thoughts on samsungs attempt to match oled picture quality with their fald q9, the thing looks like a beast, particularly its ability to be aware of the frames per second on a console and add interpolation avoid motion tear and blur. I had no idea led tech could be pushed this far in terms of quality picture considering the number of zones it is rumored to have (over 100) and the q-processing chip. P605 is a better gaming TV; It's faster and much more responsive than the 900e for faster paced FPS games. The 900e has a better looking image. Does this really matter when the oled arnt even 12bit panels?
@ahoyskid
@ahoyskid 6 жыл бұрын
The UHD Premium spec states a TV only has to accept a 10bit signal, not necessarily have a 10bit panel. Right now TVs aren't quite utilising 8bit colours with HDR, let alone 10 bit or 12 bit. Its not important at the moment and likely will never be with HDR. Do not worry about bit depth...certainly not even 10bit or not until TVs start to surpass 8 bit panels with colour tests. Perhaps tv's will start to see an advantage in using 10bit panels when they start to score around 90% rec2020 coverage scores.

Dolby vision uses 10 bit and is shot with 12 bit but depending on TV it's it being viewed on it adjust accordingly to the limits of the TV on a frame by frame basis vs hdr10 being static another words it does not change from the beginning to end. Personally have them view in both I would have to say Dolby vision has a lot better picture even on a lower-end lower brightness TV
