Idk I normally love the CMS videos but this has some classist undertones that felt pretty icky, especially about the food. Its the same things that people say about grocery stores in Latino areas, and they're statements that are flat-out wrong. I buy produce and food products there and with some careful examination you can really outfit a pantry in a pinch. Again, as with everything in every store, it's about careful examination of what you're about to put in your cart.

My personal philosophy with dollar store stuff is that everything has a use, even if it wasn't the intended use. Makeup containers hold EVERYTHING, they hold jewelry, they hold basically any little thing that needs a home. I have a cooling rack that I bought from the dollar store that I used shower rings to attach to a curtain and now functions as a makeshift scarf hanger (or a pants hanger, if you don't mind a little more bulk). Little metal serving trays serve as magnet boards, and a shower caddy can serve as a small organizer for that awkward nook in the closet. Really, you can find a purpose for just about anything you find at the Dollar Tree.
@tonydinozzoNCIS7 жыл бұрын
I normally love all the CMS videos, but this one was a bit eh to me. Some of the dollar store plastic organizers are garbage, but a lot of them work perfect. Drawer organizers are great, the plastic bins are great for under the sink or pantry storage, and some of the bigger bins work well to organize in drawers and cabinets. The measuring cups are great and 1/5 of the price bed bath and beyond or even target and they all do the same purpose. Just because something is "brand name", doesn't mean it's better than a lesser known name product. The home decor is great for seasonal items and if you're someone who wants to change up your space often. Of course you're going to promote your own product (it's your channel and you can absolutely do that) but pledge and a dollar store cloth removes the dust and that's all i need
@marissasharp98927 жыл бұрын

I'm going to disagree about the personal care items. I've seen Yes to Carrots and Yes to Blueberries and other organic products at the Dollar Tree with an expiration date two or three years in advance. I'm also a huge advocate of the crafting materials, education materials (for my husband's classroom), including National Geographic and Newberry Award Winning Children's books, best-seller hardcover books, gift bags, and cleaning products such as generic Mr. Clean Erasers. Also, in terms of purchase pricing per unit, for those who coupon you can buy tons of name brand items for tax only, so per ounce items purchased with coupons, they will always be cheaper. So a blanket statement advocating against buying specific items at the Dollar Tree should be taken with a grain of salt!

I think the dollar store is good if you're on a super tight budget or you have kids who will destroy everything, regardless of quality. For instance, I've bought my kids good quality storage bins and organization containers thinking they'll last longer and be of better quality, only to have my kids absolutely ruin them in a very short amount of time because they're kids and they just don't see the value in that kind of stuff. I've bought similar items from the dollar store that last around the same amount of time with my kids, but I didn't spend a lot of money on them, so I'm not as upset if they get ruined. I generally try to buy good quality items that I find on clearance or steep sales, but for kids who will do what they want with an item and don't care one ounce how much I spent on it, I'd rather get it from the dollar store and spend my money elsewhere.

I have no problem with someone sharing their thoughts, opinions, and experiences about the Dollar Store. I think she had great reasons for backing up her points.....whether I agreed or not!! This made me think about some things that I usually buy and what to consider in the future. One thing I LOVE to get there are those 2-3 packs of plastic containers that (I believe) are sold as soap holders (?). They are small, rectangular, and have locking sides. They are perfect for students to put all their crayons in!! I used them last year and not one student lost their crayons or had them all over the inside of their desk. I use a lot of their colored plastic baskets/bins for my classroom. I'm not going to buy more expensive ones for that purpose. But for my home, not so much. Desk drawer organizers, ice cube trays for my earrings in a drawer, etc.....yes. Gift bags and tissue...YES! Pencils, pens, markers, etc....NO. They usually are not good quality and don't last long.

Sounds like I'm not alone in disagreeing with you in this video. I've gotten pet toys and treats from dollar tree and I know enough about animals to know if they're safe (unlike raw hides, which aren't safe.) I use their microfiber cloths as reusable swifter pads and have had great success. Their wall art and picture frames are great. I'm not going to list everything because I disagree with just about every thing you said not to buy. As a graduate student, I can't always afford to spend $10 on one thing. I feel like there was good intent here, but it was let down by a lack of clear reasonings, which made it feel a bit contradictory and a little hypocritical. Hear me out first, I'm not 'hating', just doing what you did here and giving a point of view... Your message about plastic containers was spot on, plastic is a minefield for pollution and waste, glass is significantly better. You actually gave these two messages but in totally different parts of the video and not linked in anyway - I feel linking the two would have been a much more clear message that a lot of people could get on board with e.g. "avoid the plastics if you can, have a look at their glass options instead". You also go from the environmentally friendly plastic commentary, to advising you should buy all your cheap disposable party stuff there, actively encouraging plastic and paper disposal, It felt like you were reaching to find something that was OK to buy. You talk about wanting to know what's going on your body and not liking the ingredients, but say rawhide pet toys or basic foodstuffs are ok. Actually the same goes for these, you don't know how things are treated or what fillers are used, so really you're just as in the dark with those products... Read the ingredients and if you don't like what you see, don't buy it is a much better message. There's sweeping blanket statements about utensils and tools, yet your own video inserts show some pretty good quality brands (Rubbermaid), and you've shown videos in the past that talk about how great xyz item was, that you advised to steer clear from here (bins I believe). Target those commments to the tools you've used, don't denounce everything, it makes me start to distrust your previous videos - and trust me I've been with you for years as a viewer so that sucks. Respect throughout the video (not just a bit at the end) for other people's circumstances would have made a big difference. And yes, sorry but there was at least one very clearly snobby line - "who wants to decorate their house with dollar store stuff" - well, maybe someone who can't afford otherwise or who has totally different taste to you and genuinely likes it, is who. Replacing that comment with something about considering clutter or only buying it if you really like it (which is what I think you were trying to say) would have been so much nicer. Reading your responses to the comments below, I feel like you're not catching the points they're trying to get across. You're responding defensively (but not absorbing), and upvoting those supporting you. Maybe I've missed a comment or two (I only browsed through I admit), but I don't see anything that really shows you're considering your subscribers opinions. You've recognised it's polarising but don't seem to get why. Your pinned post doesn't reflect that greatly on you for this reason. Just my opinion here.

I understand the concern about some of the stuff being cheaper and flimsy but like a lot of others said, just examine the item before you purchase it. For example, I bought a plastic cooking spoon and it snapped in half the first time I used it, meanwhile I bought a knife 6 years ago and it's still going strong with no sharpening and no rust. Just a side note...the only thing that concerns me about the children's toys is the small pieces. Otherwise...children break toys. It doesn't matter if you paid $40 for a Toys 'r Us toy or $1 at Dollar Tree, there's a 50/50 shot the toy is gonna end up in a couple pieces scattered on the ground.

While they don't always have the best variety, you can always find one for .50-$1 to convey what you need to, and write something more heartfelt inside. I read and look for country of origin. Some countries I trust more than others. I will not buy items that are made in China. I do not know about the pesticides that they may have used on the food or what conditions the food was packaged under. If it does not state what country it came from it`s a no go in my cart. I listen to what our customers are saying about the products and will try something if they are having a positive result. I just got some beautiful cobalt blue drinking classes at my local dollar tree. I had no seen that color in ages and I bought the 8 they had in stock, I think they might have been an oddball second or something because I never saw them before or after. Our dollar tree also had 2 packs of 60 watt LED light bulbs that are crazy expensive at Lowes. I bought one pack to test them and they were clean white bright light so I went back for more. The LED bulbs last longer than CFLs and use less electricity. I think that product might have been co sponsored by Efficiency Maine as there is a limit to how many you could buy. I usually make my own cleaners rather than buying toxic things but out local DT has Lime away which is great to use on hard water stains and a name brand. I have also used their oxygen cleaner and concentrated lysol floor cleaner because sometimes the all natural stuff doesn't cut it and I like the lemon or lavender scent. I get mailing supplies there so I don;t have to keep a bulk stash on hand when I need to mail something. Thick hair ties and padded hairbrushes are a great buy too. I avoid yoys but the puzzles were wonderful when my kids were small and so were coloring books (but the crayons stink) bandaids and name brand toothpaste are also good buys. The all natural trail mix and snacks are great for road trips too. If you are smart you can make wise purchases of quality items and avoid the wasteful stuff. Just remember it's not a bargain if you aren't going to use it:)

When other stores were out of emergency supplies ahead if hurricane Irma here in south Florida, I was able to get quite a few canned foods, can opener, candles, sterno, aluminum pans and cooling racks to improvise a camp stove. We made hot water, coffee, and heated canned chili and soup when the power was down for 4 days. Paper plates, napkins, hand sanitizer, hand soap, and baby wipes. In the end, dollar store items allowed us to have a better ability to function and no price gouging either...

Thanks. I had bought some "cobalt" canisters several years ago and they looked so nice on my kitchen counter. A couple of months later, after using them, pulling them towards me and then pushing them back in line, I was upset to see that it was cobalt PAINT rather than true cobalt glass. So, I've been leery of purchasing any cobalt since. Naturally, at $1 each I was worried that they not be true cobalt glass. WOW what a great deal!

What surprises me about this video is how much negativity is mentioned in regards to most of the things one would find at a dollar store. I buy a lot of the "Never Buy" items on your list with no issues whatsoever. I like good quality and high end stuff like anyone and do buy them! However, when it comes to saving money on everyday items - I use the dollar store ones. If you have ever read the book "don't leave the cosmetics counter without me" the author advocates on not spending money on items just for their name or packaging. Saying something is "Icky" is a bit condescending. I generally like your videos - this one -not so much.

2 favorite things from a specific dollar store here called "the dollar tree" == Foam board (i use it to build RC planes, and other projects). and "La's Totally Awesome" all purpose cleaner. Batteries are also pretty good depending on their usage. what I hate: most electronics. ie; wife tends to cheap out and buy crappy USB chargers from the dollar store. the cables always break after like a week of mild use, they make awful buzzing noises like they're about to catch on fire, or in the case of the one she currently uses in her car to charge her phone; it shorts itself out and causes the FM radio to lose most of its signal. if she spent all of like 3$ more, and maybe another 10 minute drive to walmart even, she'd have an average quality charger that would have worked for a couple years; or hell, she could have waited 2 days for one on amazon prime for probably the same price as the dollar store one as an add-on to something else we ordered, but nope. live and learn I guess.

I buy the off brand magic eraser sponges and microfiber cleaning cloths, both of which work really well. I think you could have been fairer in the video. While you do make a valid point about mindless consumerism, I believe your audience is already at least partially aware of it by virtue of watching your channel devoted to cleaning and maintaining what they already own. You also cross signals when you extoll the virtues of your "superior" but more expensive product over a cheaper product that may already be working well for them and dissuading some throw away products while okaying other throw away products, all the while having struck an anti consumption tone.

I really disagree with some of these. Like everywhere, the Dollar Store has some good things and some not-so-good things. Instead of discounting it because it was $1, just use critical thinking skills! Of course a flimsy spatula is going to suck, but I've seen flimsy spatulas in almost every store I look. But sometimes people can't save up to buy nicer items, so cheaper utensils will have to do. As long as someone uses their brain, the Dollar Store can be an awesome place to shop! I get all of my personal care items from the dollar store. A lot of it is name brand and I can beat a shampoo for $3. Especially since my Dollar General lets me load TONS of coupons onto an app that I just scan once at checkout and I'm done.

We bought a full series of minecraft gaming books at Costco for about 10$ each only to find them a few months later for 3$ each at our local dollarama. Video game characters, sky landers, Lego dimensions, Disney infinity. If you already have the console and the game this is a less expensive way to add to your player character collection. 3-4$ instead of 10-20$ a piece. You just have to look and do it without the kids in tow. Save the items for gifts or for rainy days. Love this video and agree with you. :)

I bought more expensive dinnerware somewhere else and it didn't last like the ones I bought at the dollar store. You just have to look closely at everthing you buy..

STONED FURRY Do you not realize that just because they love it doesn’t mean that it’s good for them? Do you know how many vets have removed strings from cats stomachs to the tune of hundreds and hundreds of dollars in vet bills? Maybe you’re just an irresponsible pet owner

Yeaahhhhhh idk if this lady realized what it's like to be poor and have no choice but to shop at the dollarstore....

I think this video is directed to people who CAN afford to shop elsewhere as at 9:44 she said she understands some people are on a budget.

A lot of time people that have little money ( don’t worry , on welfare etc ) don’t understand how to stretch a dollar appropriately , hence the reason they are In the situation they are in.

Exactly, when I was working a shitty job I really had to learn how to stretch my money. And you wouldn't believe the people I worked with who'd spend all their wages on smokes, booze and getting snacks everyday at the vending machine. They'd often make remarks at me because I could "afford" things they couldn't. They're probably the ones commenting "how dare you.." on this video. Riiiight... no choice but the dollar store.

LAS Totally Awesome Cleaner from Dollar Tree is amazing on cleaning hard cleaning jobs. I use it on stuff like stained carpets, house siding, Outside concrete patios, Outside grills, car upholstery, car tires, greasy hand tools, microfiber furniture, and yes even cleaning shoes. Works great on my sons football cleats.So many great uses for LAS Totally Awesome and tons of you tube videos on different uses to use it on, plus it’s only $1.00 at the dollar tree.

Hi Melissa. I would like to ask... Does microfiber cloth have expiration? I mean how often should we change them to a new bought one considering that I use them regularly. Thanks
