I have made mutiple attempts to get that thing working and it just simply never configures right and turns the goal of playing games into a nightmare trying to figure out why it won't work. I'm not a newbie. I was running MAME and other stuff from CLI more than 20 years ago, when just getting Pacman to work was an accomplishment. But it worked better than this modern frontend. I'm convinced it was designed by someone who loves the BMW interface. No thanks. I just want to play some games.

Great video. Although a more elaborated setup guide would be helpful for novice users, especially since for a process as technical as this, even one missed step can break the process altogether. @@TheOswaldChannel USB is just a connection, every device requires drivers. Otherwise you could use anything on Playstation and Switch too. The Windows version on Xbox is stripped down compared to Windows on PC. OS Builtin drivers does not have feature parity between PC and Xbox console. I am not saying it won't work, I am just throwing something to think about why it might not be possible. Especially because you can install apps on PC with root rights and do what you want, while in Retail mode the installation and system access of Xbox apps is limited. Can you use any generic gamepad on Xbox in example? (I don't know, just asking.)

@@thelonejedi538 Have you tried using the OGL renderer in retroarch on Xbox? It's far, far inferior to either the DX11 or DX12 ones. And there's no option for Vulkan, because Vulkan isn't supported on Xbox. DX12 would be the best choice by a country mile. If there's one API that's unneeded, it's OGL.

FOR THOSE USING THE UPDATED DOLPHIN VERSION to access the USB stick step in the video to direct Dolphin to your games folder on your USB, you need to hit the settings button, using the stick navigate the settings tabs to Paths & Folders. Select Add Path. Go to the USB stick icon. Select the folder containing your games and hit Select. Your games should populate the UI.

For anyone struggling to play wii games I figured a workaround that has worked for me so far in playing no more heroes, mad world and dkcr. All axis for shake on both the Wii more and nunchuck to the triggers, and tie the swing motion to the right stick. A and b to the bumpers, and c z and 1 and 2 to the face buttons. It can be a bit tricky at first but it’s definitely playable.

Plus cores in RetroArch suffers from slowdowns when it comes to I/O, such aa file access. This is very noticeable for the PPSSPP core.

I'm on the XBOX Emulation hub discord, and they said that they want to build a compatibility layer for directx12 to port the emulators that, for the moment, we can't have ported on XBOX for the lack of API renderers.

This is a great port. I've been using it on my Series S in conjunction with the RetroPass frontend and it's awesome. Having the frontend makes the lack of a full interface in Dolphin much less of an issue, although I can't wait to see it improve over time.

Here (if you use USB on retail mode like me) I just configured my USB drive with a tool called Xbox media USB to format and give permissions needed by dolphin and did what MVG did here. Since I already replayed through Metroid prime, starfox adventures entirely without an itch.

Sucks so bad you can't configure the controls without needing to go through the windows process. The emulator is awesome!! But the controls are my ONLY issue. I'm an idiot with computers, so even following guides; I'm somehow incapable of setting up the controls. So no matter how badly I want to use this, I'll have to wait for controller configuration to be added to Xbox dolphin itself. Retroarch has always been extremely complicated for me. So this is great for a noob like me. Hopefully soon I'll get to use this

Astonishing emulation chops, and if MESA ever comes to fruition (there's currently a BountySource bounty going to raise money, much like there was for Dolphin) then we could even see the likes of CEMU/Citra/etc. Weee!

Tried Retroarch in Windows for the first time yesterday and was hugely disappointed. As you said: massively convoluted front end, and plenty of other issues too (whoever thought it was a good idea to also capture the UI when taking screenshots of games needs their head examining). It might work well on a Raspberry Pi, or other devices, but in Windows you're much better off using individual emulators, which is what I do.

When i used RetroArch to play Wind Waker, using the PictoBox to take pictures would cause the game to crash on me. It wasn't a huge deal but i was trying to get all the heart containers and i needed to get one piece of heart using a treasure map that i would get from completing the PictoBox submission. Hopefully this stand alone Dolphin emulator fixes that problem, cause i did have a great time playing Wind Waker on the Xbox

The Pictobox requires efb2ram instead of efb2texture only or however the settings are called these days. And it needs cpu efb access. If any of those 2 settings is wrong, the game crashes when you try to use the Pictobox. On regular Dolphin, there are game specific ini files provided that automatically enable those 2 features for the game. It's possible that RetroArch doesn't ship with those files, maybe even intentionally, because those 2 settings might cost you 50% of the performance in this game. The performance loss is likely not an issue on a series s, but one a xbox one x, the game might even be playable with the hacks, but certainly not with them disabled. Protip: If this works, create yourself a hotkey that switches those 2 settings, because switching them on the fly should be stable. Well, if you switch them before trying to take a picture.

I'd love to see other emulators get ported. Imagine Cemu being ported over. However correct me if I'm wrong, but the Xbox Series doesn't support Vulkan and since Cemu doesn't support DirectX it would make that port far harder (and honestly not worth the trouble for most devs)

There is OGL support on Xboxes, but it's VERY limited and honestly even DX11 is better, let alone DX12. What would be really interesting is a port of RPCS3. Older versions had DX12 support which was dropped to simplify things, but if someone cared enough they could in theory port it to UWP. Can you imagine how funny it would be for Xbox to support PS3 emulation before PS5 does?

@@jemiebridges3197 nope, that's the thing the input from wii mote can't be recognized by the Xbox. I don't know if someone will create some hacky way of doing so, just like adding gyro to Xbox controller was invented, but until then we can only hope for Microsoft's official support of the Wii mote.

I had the same issue with starting games from a USB drive. Following this guide from the Xbox Emu Hub on Discord fixed it: USB Setup Guide! Step 1) Connect your USB to your PC and format it as NTFS. Step 2) After formatting, right click your drive, click Properties and the Security tab. Step 3) Go to Advanced > Add > Select Principal > Advanced > Find Now > ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES > OK > Tick the Full Control box > OK > Tick Replace all child object permission entries box > OK NOTE: You WILL get an error about System Volume Information, click continue and ignore it.

The one thing I wish they add to RetroArch is a GUI for controller mapping. Having a visual representation of what buttons are being mapped would help me tremendously. No second guessing if I'm mapping the right buttons or not.

the retroarch UI is absolutely horrible, i agree. to me it's unusable, especially with its mobile style front end. not sure if there are plug-ins to get a better front end or something. i prefer to setup specific emulators.

Switch to the XMB UI, or the old one before that (can't remember the name) - the default UI sucks though. Once you get it set up it's pretty easy to use, you just have to remember that when doing controller setup it's using the "retro pad" which is mapped to the actual controller.

i would seriously recommend using an external USB 3.0/3.1 SSD instead of a flash drive. you get much faster load times, and if you want to use hd texture packs, you will absolutely need them to be running off a fast drive since UWP apps are limited to 5GB of ram

Very true, preloading multiple GB of hd texture packs on a USB can end up not working cause of no available RAM, and the game won't launch

I do like retroarch but yeah, I run into issues with ps2/dreamcast/wii sometimes within it on my xsx. I mainly use the flycast & xbsx2 ports now for dreamcast & ps2. I wonder if cemu will get a xbox series port eventually being it is open source now.

Tons of commercial game releases use emulation now. Konami collections, Atari 50, Arcade Archives. You just have to actually pay who owns the rights for the game.

Perhaps if/when 4k is enabled on the emulator? I bet you could crank everything up to max in the settings and have a pretty darn good time. Keep in mind the emulator is pretty early on right now so things like 4k just aren't enabled right now.

Here you must keep in mind that some of the games doesn't support really well full 4k so generally we tend to select 1440p. It's an awesome middle ground between excellent performance and sharp visuals. Edit: and I'm also on series x

Not sure why it's known to be like that. My old gaming laptop with 8750H and 1050Ti can run it perfectly, and IIRC so are iPhones (or at least I remember it running well on tbe iPhone 11 and DolphiniOS. I might misremembered it though, so take the iPhone claim with a grain of salt).

This is good news, if only because it gives an alternative to the RA platform. (I'd suggest looking in to the emulation scene as to why RA is in poor favour, overall. The fewer people that use it, the better in my honest opinion.) The improvements are impressive, and I'm pleased to see emulation on consoles is getting even better, which is wild to me.

After XBSX2 & Dolphin emulators, hopefully Vita3K emulator (PS Vita) would be next so that we could play Soul Sacrifice, Killzone Mercenary, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax & other games that have never been ported to Xbox consoles. For Cemu & Yuzu / Ryujinx emulators, better to beta-test those in secret.

Not really. Their CPUs are almost identical so emulation will be practically identical unless it becomes GPU limited like raising the internal resolution past a certain point

I have the originals but R4 is a blurry mess by today's standards, so was wondering whether to buy an XSX or XSS. Are you saying the XSS could upscale to 1080p no problem, but might struggle upscale to 4K? I've seen programs like DuckStation can offer things like that. Cheers 🍻

I do prefer using retroarch, since I'm familiarized with it and think it's easier to configure. Indeed it limits what you can do but for an casual gameplay I see no issues. And performance is great, 4k with minor stuttering in some games

This is a fantastic opportunity for the dolphin team to build a controller friendly ui. Something that the pc emulator sorely needs. Required kb+m ui navigation kills any chance at emulating that “it just works” console experience.

PS3's Cell architecture was notoriously difficult to develop for, and presumably just as difficult to emulate successfully on modern hardware. It's part of the reason why the PS5's BC functionality for PS3 games is so shallow compared to Xbox's program. But yeah I'd love to see PS3 games running smoothly on my Series X...one can dream!

Nice to see it get a port! Unfortunately, the configuration seems to be a bit less convenient for playing rips than my GCLoader-Carby setup. Hopefully by the time they sort out those issues they can add a 6x native resolution option! I’d love to try some Air Ride at 4K on my new OLED!

Really hoping a bunch of other big name emulators get ported to the Xbox Series. Already now it's a great value emulator box, and the more dedicated UWP apps that pop up the better the deal! RetroArch can go take a long walk of a pier though, that software really drags me down
