This test is based on the AC running full time, whereas when it's in a van it will only run to maintain the chosen temperature, then the compressor will switch off. So I think it would be more accurate to test how long it will last, keeping a small space like a van at a comfortable temperature.
@CliffordStaley
@CliffordStaley 3 ай бұрын
Agreed, sloppy test. Amp draw changes with temp and as the guy above said the smaller space temp will drop lowering the amp draw.

Great video, thanks. We're working on a build for next fall and would love to see a detailed video explaining why I would want to install a 12V vs 120V AC. From what I can gather, it seems like a wash as it relates to cost. Where we wouldn't spend the money on inverters, and other components, we would spend it on the higher cost of a 12V AC unit. A side-by-side run time comparison would be interesting to see. Thanks again.

I have a different 12v AC, but they use the same amount of energy. I have 6 x 100 BBB & live in the MId Atlantic. So, summers get very hot and with the temp 90-100 I get between 5-6 hours. If it is 80-90 & I get way more run time. Like 8-9 hours. So, insulation of your area is KING....JMO
@Gordzillion
@Gordzillion 3 жыл бұрын
A more realistic test would have the cold air side of the unit vented inside a room. Most air conditioners don't run their compressors non stop like in this video example. Depending on the insulation of a room, the run time may be doubled.

Just trying to do some research on campers and the electrical systems. The broad plan is to purchase a truck bed camper, as well as a f150. The F150 can come with either a 2kwh battery as well as the truck acting as a generator. Also available is a 7.2kw battery. So I am wondering, is the Unit in the video available to be powered through the Camper from the truck. I apologize if I am not making sense.

Great test, but when you were talking about run time I think maybe you didn’t consider the fact that as the inside of the van cools off the AC will not have to work as hard and use less amperage so I think your test shows a worst case scenario which was great to see

This was helpful thank you, I need to setup an AC system that would keep the Van cool enough for my dog if I need to leave him in the Van for a short time. I am thinking about 400ah this should work for me along with solar and a generator I would be able to do whatever I want. of course I would need some type or temp alarm that would notify me if there was failure.

I Am a novice BUT if running that on a small RV the internal temperature would remain lower as the activity builds . On your test you were trying to cool the whole city! The cool air was being immediately warmed because there was no closed space . Your test was like running the A/c unit with every windows and door open in the camper !!!!! Please explain am I Stupid or would a “closed space” test be more valid. I really think consumption in my class C Motorhome would be lower than your test shows .
@rnordquest
@rnordquest Жыл бұрын
This is the only thing he can control. No one knows the insulation of your rig, how often someone opens the door, or if you like to sleep during the day. What he tested allows you to take the info and apply it to your rig. He can’t realistically test every camper out there. Even paint color makes a difference.

So...Just for clarity. I would still get more time cooling if I'm running through shore power or adding a little power from my 320 solar on the roof OR running the alternator on my truck? I get that the AC might be drawing a bit more on High then i can keep up with but it would still add to run time, correct?
@saundz8791
@saundz8791 2 жыл бұрын
If you have solar or alternator charging you would benefit while they are actively charging your batteries since what ever you are adding while you charge will compensate for what you are consuming. If your shore power keeps up with the consumption you can run the unit over night for sure.

Honestly, this is not the best test to predict run time. You are outside and the blowers are outside as well and so there is no internal Factors controlling the runtime such as insulation and a vacuum to space.

You get less amps and visa versa...Why Utility Companies run high voltage lines to the transforms. Then step up the Amperage..As they can run smaller wire size to the source.
