technically ChromiumOS is a gentoo-based distro, so you can patch it to look just like ChromeOS but have emerge and sudo precompiled and preinstalled into it, and i believe recent versions of ChromiumOS can even literally display wayland windows inside the default GUI, intended for virtual machines (crouton) but i think they would also work for apps running outside any chroot or VM so i believe it is possible to make an insane sleeper frankendistro like that

This is so awesome! Btw, DON"T use a swap partition but a swapfile. Also because (U)EFI/GPT are better than BIOS/MBR (failsafe mechanism for example), it should be always be used instead, even if only in hybrid mode. BTRFS on root works perfectly fine and offers many significant improvements and features compared to different filesystems. Always use BTRFS when possible or likely even better ZFS. march=native is more optimized than just for cpu family architecture. It also optimizes for that particular cpu model when possible. -j option should be cpu threads +1 for IO thread. Or so the used to say. I guess that it may be beneficial to have many more for all those extra IO capabilities of NVMe drives. It's worth a test. You really should try to use the USE flags as much as possible, especially before the installation. This should save you compile times and improve performance and add additional features for programs that other distros don't have, like for example Ubuntu doesn't include PCRE search functionality into ripgrep, (but pcre2grep is a better option for that if you can compile it there lol). Your capture card has a problem there @ 14:47 because this is a different type/mode of low level graphical interface which works differentlu than text mode AFAIR. But that doesn't mean that a capture card shouldn't support these lesser used modes. With mirrorselect the search for fastest mirrors should be done rather than choosing manually. It only takes a few minutes max, yet it saves download time always. @ 19:30. No, actually selecting nomultilib profile for thhe entire system means lesser compile times and is recommended unless you still need 32 bit libs for some reason.

The performance paradox. With gentoo you can optimize your system for minimal resource usage, but need a beefy CPU for all that coompiling, yet if you have a powerful CPU, those performance gains don't matter so much. I think the best use case for Gentoo is being a Monero mining node

Just a tip: I used to put /home in a separate partition. If something goes wrong in an future update and that needs a fresh (re)install, you not lose your data or need a difficult recuperation. With this ton of space, you can spare around 200GB to /root and the rest to /home. About distro itself: Gentoo is all about optimizations. You can fine-tuning the system to offer only the absolutely necessary to run. A little example: FFMPEG package haves 40+ dependencies. Most of them is to support obscure or not-so-popular formats of audio and video. In a popular distro, all of these goes together. Useless to 99% of users. In Gentoo, you get only what you want. A case here at home: recently I get an i3-9100F machine. 4GB RAM, 256GB SATA SSD. First I tried MX Linux. My machine goes irritating slow. Tried Fedora after, same thing. So I tried Gentoo, despite I not install it in other machines in a while. What a f***ing diference. From start to graphical login, less than 10 seconds. Then around 10 seconds or less to enter GNOME 40 and just start working. Of course, it is not for beginners. And the compilation times is a pain depending on packages installed. At least for some big ones like Firefox, LibreOffice and others they have pre-compiled binaries ready to use.

I know for many power-users Gentoo is like a pilmigrage end goal to achieve, but i want to remind everyone that Gentoo isn't for everyone. If for your professional or personal needs you don't need an absolute configurability or familiarity with the system or if the wait times you will need to endure for recompiling during updates or installation is inexcusable for you then don't go for it. From my experience, people who use Gentoo do it because they find the experience more enjoyable than other distros in their daily drive. Gentoo is not a miracle drug for your work optimization, Arch linux, Mint and even Ubuntu are as capable of doing your work done as Gentoo.
@9a3eedi2 жыл бұрын
I used gentoo for a while and I agree with you, it's not for everyone. The level of configurability/flexibility is really unnecessary for those who just want a daily driver. However I still recommend everyone give it a try to get a deep dive into Linux and really understand how things work
@MisakaMikotoDesu2 жыл бұрын
It's easier to do things like compile all my drivers into the kernel than to deal with modules. It's also easier to use an EFI stub to boot rather than try to configure a boot loader. It's also nice not having a billion -dev packages because on gentoo every package is compiled from source, so you already have the source code ready. Gentoo is for people who want to configure their system the way they want and don't need training wheels to keep them from fucking up. It has a steep learning curve but it's easily the best distro once you know what you're doing.

Well, you have 4TB of hard drive ;o) In general I think swap is useless, but I would have swap file, especially on SSD there's no point in having swap partition. One possible reason might be that you are having a lot of software open, and then you want to install some software. Compiling might take just enough of memory that some bits would need to be swapped. Not with the settings Mental is using, but if you have LTO + PGO and other more aggressive optimization flags, then the use of RAM goes up.

One of your best walkthroughs yet. I’m on Artix and don’t know if I’ll ever get around to a Gentoo install, but glad to have this point of reference as a good starting point. I know, I know, just consult and rtfm, but still, it’s nice to have someone break it down pretty thoroughly. (Kernel compilation aside). Thanks again. Great vid/tutorial.

I'm following along in an apt building at 4am (most of my neighbors are sleeping) and all of a sudden he puts on the German electronica (several decibels higher than his voice) - luckily I have a manual audio kill switch to disconnect my KRK V6 speakers. Somebody had to have gotten jolted awake by that.

Protip: If you’re making tech video the music (if needed at all) should be quieter than your voice. Otherwise great stuff, it’s a shame there isn’t more gentoo content on youtube.

I think the type of music chosen is for loud banging, it doesn't work as a background music, it was probably chosen to showcase his super fast system, like console games of old.

I didn't expect to hear german music during an Gentoo install today.

btw the video is freaking out because it has to do "word wrap" from CLI to a video capture you can either capture it in a bigger resolution, or off every frame that changes background color, every time it glitches it changes to a lighter color

Dude I saw this thumbnail as an end of video suggestion, and I said to myself: "This fucking HAS to be a Mental Outlaw video".

I would do this on my laptop or if I ever get a newer computer. As it is right now, I'm stuck with no tools to transfer over things over from windows and such. T_T
