In this video we're exploring the 2nd biggest city in the Dominican Republic, Santiago de los Caballeros. As we explore the city we discuss one of the main questions we get asked all the time, Is the Dominican Republic safe and do we feel safe in the Dominican Republic. We talk about the most safe and unsafe things here in this country and also give some advice for how to protect your own safety while travelling.
In Santiago de los Caballeros we visit:
Parque Duarte and Santiago Apostle Cathedral (the outside as the Cathedral was closed).
We walk around the Historical Centre of Santiago.
We have lunch at The Circus Food Park (maps.app.goo.gl/mGzLMBpED3vmv...)
We visit the Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración (Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration) and check out the amazing views of the city.
We visit Santo Domingo Coffee shop in Plaza Internacional
We give a tour of our two bedroom apartment rental along with the rooftop pool.

Santiago is as safe as any city in the world or safer, for example is safer than NY or Chicago, Mexico City, Barcelona and even Paris right now, what I do think is that you should be careful driving, and the motorcyclists when they passed you by, but Santiago I feel is very safe, the only thing I don’t do when I visit is drive, Even thought I was born twenty minutes away, so be careful and keep enjoying yourselfs.

So many robberies and sexual assaults on women...local police just laugh when tourist women complain....look at all the British American and Canadian government warnings..government warnings...women this is the island where you most definitely have the highest chance of being sexually assaulted and the government there really doesn't care as long as the money keeps rolling in...

I was in Santiago a week ago visiting my family and went to Parque Duarte. Those big trees are called "Laurel de Indias" from the ficus family. There were lots of trees in the park, but they got removed over the years with the park renovations. There is a huge botanic garden not too far from the historic center and it's beautiful. If you want to get away from the loud city center, there are plenty of green areas around the province. The municipality of San Jose de Las Matas and Janico have plenty of mountains, rivers and parks. Visit the Bao and Taveras Dam Lakes water sports like Jet Ski- rumor has it there are fresh and yummy fish restaurants in the vicinity. You should also consider visiting the Old Santiago "Jacagua" ruins on the northern side of province. Its origins date back to the 1500's, then destroyed by a powerful earthquake causing the settlement to relocate to today's historic center. The views of the northern mountain range from there are amazing if you like hiking. Lots of rivers where you can swim too. :)

I love that you visited Santiago de los Caballeros! Dominican Republic is absolutely beautiful! The people are fantastic! The culture is incredibly rich! The capital city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the first European settlement in the Western Hemisphere. It is the most ecologically diverse region in the Caribbean. It is incredibly ethnically diverse. You meet Middle Eastern Dominicans, European Dominicas, Asian Dominicans, etc.. The food is delicious! I can't wait to go back. Go! Go! Go!

I went to a professional baseball game in Santiago (Águilas vs Tigres del Licey). The fans really passionately get into with with opposing fans, but in a friendly way. From what I can remember, the fans spend more time talking to each other than watching the game. They as if they actually playing on the field. I loved it. The best professional baseball game I have ever seen besides Yankees vs. the Red Sox.

Looking forward to learning that. We feel VERY safe there too. Like anywhere else, be aware and smart with your cell close to you in hand and bag cross body. Have a sense of adventure & embrace socializing with the Dominicans, they’re very nice & helpful people. Hope to run into you guys someday in the Las Terrenas area, one of our dream retirement towns! Bad people are everywhere around the world BUT like all places, don’t flash any wealth, be aware of your surroundings and pay attention. I lived in Santiago for 7 years, left in 2018. It's a beautiful city. I have to admit that I was a bit scared when you guys were in the downtown with your cell phones and camera on hand. As a best practice I've always avoid using my cell on the outside. I would recommend a nice restaurant (whenever you come back😊) it's called Camp David, there's a stunning view of Santiago from here, mostly at night. Nice video 🎉

Several years ago there were issues in some areas of the DR with cell phone theft. Today is a very rare issue. Everyone carries a cellphone these days, and many use it and carry it openly. Most crime, if any, is between youths. Theft with a tourist is extremely rare in the country. Tourists are valued and the authorities will hunt you down easily. Cameras are everywhere, and broad daylight crime is very rare these days…

Another nice interesting video guys. I'm in the DR for 2 months. Now in Punta Cana, Los Corales, without safety issues, and next month I will come to Cabarete via Las Terrenas, maybe I will see you there! Here there are also many dogs on the streets en beaches and there seem to be more every year, they often bark and sleeping is sometimes difficult. In my opinion the DR has a street dog problem that needs to be solved. I also see more wanderers, especially from Haiti. the DR has a number of challenges 🤷‍♂

@_Passie-I am sorry, but I got a bit confused with your comment, can you please clarify. When you say the DR has challenges are you only referring to Los Corales in Punta Cana or it is the same issue prevalent within the whole country? In this video I was unable to see any stray dogs on the streets or "Haitian wanderers." Is this also true for Santiago because if I understood correctly, I believe that is what you implied? And by the way, what exactly is a "Wanderers"? Don't believe I am familiar with the term. Perhaps what you intended to say is better defined as "Loitering." If that's what I believe you said, then the issue is not ubiquitous to the DR. Although in some places it is far worse than others, it is something common all over the world, as well as the US. Many states have local ordinances against loitering, or laws that make loitering in certain places at certain times, an illegal act, which is also true and same in the DR. There is no difference, only the way how it is being enforced. If enough citizens complain to their local municipalities, I am sure the problem will be corrected, but if people only complain and do nothing, well don't expect it to disappear all by itself.

Yes, a monorail is being built, and a cable car system. First phase will be completed this year and provide service near and around the city center, traveling to the largest lower income community in the northwest side. Phase two will travel along a main corridor on the east of the city, running north south to west, completing a loop to phase one. The cable car system will transverse perpendicular to the monorail into the second largest lower and mixed income communities, near various universities. These arial systems will provide q great view or the city and fast, convenient, and economical transportation… The DR is racing toward a First Class economy.

I’ve been living in Santiago for 3 years now, glad you enjoyed the city. It’s very safe and welcoming city. There are building a monorail and cable car system. Yes, lots of cars here, economic powerhouse in the DR.

It's called hustling...Dominicans are masters of the hustle. I respect it because they have good tactics and it can benefit the person being hustled too. It's an effective way to make money. A firm no Gracias with a stern look will usually bring the hustle to an end if you aren't interested. I don't drive in DR. Too many risks of cops pulling us over to demand a payout. I'd rather a driver take care of those issues. I have taken the bus from Santo Domingo to Samana and that was a great experience!

We've driven all over the DR on our own and not once had an issue with cops and paying them off. We've got pulled to the side (randomly) a few times but they just let us go straight way - Trevor

This was a great video. Our group went to Puerto Plata on a cruise in 2023 and there were dozens of people begging at the port, everything looked abandoned and the beach they took us to was a resort that was falling apart. No one was interested in returning. Seems like we just weren't in a good part of the country.

Thanks for visiting and liking my beautiful island I am a bit sad that you didn't like it like the other cities but you have visited but I appreciate your honesty. I want to point out that those little streets and sidewalks are from the colonials time that the local government is trying to keep. Our food is delicious and yes the city is really populated. The is rich in history as well. Love ❤️ from a Santiaguera living in USA

Hi guys, it was nice to meet you on the beach earlier this month. That appears to be a Ceiba tree. Closer to home, in Perla Marina, there are a few very old specimens I recommend you visit. While you’re there, there is a terrific pizza restaurant called Ceiba cafe… comida excelente!!

@ 2:12 that is a Gaucho tree. They have a sticky white resin inside. If you ever been to Parque Colón next to calle El Conde Santo Domingo, the tree is there too with a metal plaque with the name of it's species.

if u drive with your eyes well open and go with the flow its all good, what realy got me heated when i was driving there was the speed bumps and the sudden holes in roads :) next time i will be looking for a jeep instead of a regular car, o and honking is part of driving :D. I never felt any unsave situations and whent right up to the border of Haiti, as long as u stay normal and not act like a walking piggybank.
