10:18 it's actually quitr easy to find vegan restaurants in Santiago and Santo Domingo. In Santiago we have Naturaliste, Casita Vegetariana and a lot of options.

Hi Anna and Trevor, happy to see you again. I’m very glad that you guys feel safe in D.R. (my native country) as you said, you have to abide by the local rules of safety. Things do happen, especially in the big cities. Just be aware of your surroundings, don’t be foolish and you should be safe. Any poor, developing country will consider anyone visiting from a developed country as rich, so be humble and try not to be flashy, don’t walk around on foot alone at night. I think the locals are more susceptible to crime than the tourist as the country’s economy depends heavily on tourism therefore they’re quite protected. I grew up in NewYork and live in Europe since years now but I hear from relatives that crime has gone up, especially petty street crime like purse and cellphone snatching on the streets. In any case please enjoy your stay there, life is short and the world is a crazy place right now so in comparison it’s a paradise over there. Stay safe an keep those great videos coming. We live in Santiago (Potezuela). It is very different to Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo. I have heard of a couple of instances of violence in the last 5 years. I used to work at Data Vimenca and finished at 11:00pm. I raced home on my motorbike and only saw the Police collecting from SUVs. I would get waved past. Basically the police are totally defunded and the people are so civilized that they don't shoot each other or loot the stores. I traveled the country with a couple of guys on dirt bikes to Constanza, Pedernales etc and we stayed in Hotel Economicos. We paid 500 pesos a night (10:00USD) but found later that Dominicans pay 300. We would enter a town and look for a youth with a motorcycle and ask him to show us the cheap hotels. We would tip him. We felt safer biking here than in the US or UK as the Dominicans have eyes in the back of their heads. My wife rides a scooter and makes sure that you can see she is a woman. The Dominicans take great care protecting their women.

@@mike_skinner Mike, in D.R. the police are not well trained (especially in rural areas) and they are badly paid so they compensate by extorting drivers, unfortunately, lots of corruption going on there. Teachers are also badly paid but fortunately kids still get a relatively good education and teachers are still respected. In general people are still very humble, friendly and respectful of one another. Mostly because, as in most developing countries, religion plays a big roll. Dominicans for the most part are God fearing people, as in most places you have your rotten apples that want things the easy way instead of earning them by learning a trade and working. Looting shops and shooting each other is not a thing over there and hopefully it will never be. In D.R. is common practice in many places to have prices for locals and prices for tourists. I don’t disagree with this as the average salary in D.R. is about $600 a month and comparing to the U.S. where it might be $3K and upwards then it wouldn’t be fair for the regular Dominican to pay the same prices as a tourist does. What’s happened in the last 15 years is that do to gentrification housing prices have gone up incredibly. For the Dominicans abroad and foreigners that are investing in retirement homes it’s very affordable but for the locals earning average salaries it’s impossible to afford to buy a home. So while it’s great that people are investing in D.R., it helps the economy and creates jobs, salaries are not being adjusted accordingly so there is still a big discrepancy in this respect. In any case it is a great place to live and even better if you earn an American (USA) or European salary. In any case be safe and be blessed 🙏🏼🍀

Thanks for another great video. Hope we will encounter you guys next month! Yes, the breezes keep the bugs away in Cabarete. One of the reasons I love it. Tip for the noseeums/jejenes: coconut oil infused with essentials like peppermint and lemongrass. They are too small to bite through the oil. Note: You may find drowned bugs on you. Second note: This does not work for mosquitoes. We find Muskol lotion with deet best for mozzies. Happy travels (we watched your stories).

Hi, Agree with you as well. Mexico and the Dominican Republic are both great countries to travel to. We usually like to go to Mexico in the winter months and always try to visit different cities and areas. The food is also delicious. We spent our honemoon, many, many years ago, in the DR. Went back April 2021, just for a week in an all incl. in La Romana (Bayahibe). Amazing resort, food, beach. We plan to return and stay, at least 5 weeks, next year. We really want to visit Las Terrenas, Cabarete, Sosua, perhaps a few day in SD, the capital and the center of the island. Looking forward to it... Love your videos. Keep them coming! By the way, Albania, your coming destination is great . We spent two weeks around the country in October 2019. Make sure you visit and spend, at least a few days each in: Tirana, Kruje, Shkoder, Berat, Gjirokastra, Butrint and of course, Sarande (crystal clear waters). If you are able, spend a few weeks in Slovenia. Another amazing country, with losts to see. Do not miss Ljubljana. HAPPY TRAVELS!

If you know French then you can sort of communicate with Spanish speaking people because the two languages are both derived from latin. We were able to communicate pretty well with a Spanish speaking person by speaking French also supplemented by an electronic translator.

I spent several summers in Las Terrenas and I did feel like the mosquitoes were worse there than what I have experienced in the Cabarete area. I always travel with a small diffuser and some lemon grass oil. I have it running all day on the terrace with the sliding glass doors open so the mosquitoes are encouraged to stay away. I have also made some all natural mosquito repellent with essential oils, and they seem to work.

Hey Trevor, the web says no it doesn't work. However I swear it does, B vitamins do not buildup in your system so there is no harm in trying. Please note if your pee becomes neon yellow, don't worry! What I did like is that you were more honest with the affordability, $2k a month is more or less what my budget is, but then I live with my wife and 2 kids outside of the city in a local dominican community and pay about $250/month in rent+ electric and other similar expenses, and I'm not living like a "rich" person. So then I wonder how expensive things are in Canada? Being from Sweden, 10 years ago, I lived alone on less than $2k and I think that I lived a "better" life, economically than what I do here. And that is taking into consideration that the local DR minimum income is about 5x less than what you would expect in like Sweden. So you would consider that things would be cheaper than what they actually are. I mean when it comes to groceries in supermarkets, I would consider them being just a little bit cheaper (and some things WAY more expensive) than back "home". So after living here for 10 years, it's still crazy how people can survive on like $300-400/month, when I myself am struggling, when I have 5-6x more to spend. And prices have DEFINITLY gone up since the start of the pandemic. Things that could cost like 100 pesos now costs 200 or more. And I wonder where you would find meals for 100 pesos? When I first arrived here 10 years ago, it was possible to find lunches for like 125 pesos, but now I have not seen any local places having lunches for less than like 200 pesos. And about being able to negotiate things, it depends on what it is. Trying to negotiate a bottle of water, NO WAY, things in supermarkets or local stores, colmados (same as bodegas), if you tried negotiate, you would probably just make the owner/clerk really upset as many are currently in a very bad shape. So in general, if the item has a fixed price, don't bother trying to negotiate, if it's something else, like a beach vendor or so, then yes you can and should negotiate the price. And about drivers license. Unless you have a license from any country that isn't recognized internationally, then you don't need an international license, as your license is valid, but ONLY for up to 6 months, after that you should get a Dominican License, but then that would require you to get residency, which is not a complicated process, just as they mentioned VERY tedious and many documents and trips here and there to get it done. And although it's true that local traffic police seldom checks your drivers license (I've been checked maybe 2 times in the past 10 years), unless you break any law, if you're in an accident or so, you could be in a great deal of trouble. That's why many times just to "resolve" the issue, locals often recommends the foreigner to pay the other party whatever they want, which sadly many abuse. So still, if you are going to be here for longer than 6 months and are planning on driving during that time, take that into consideration when considering residency or not. The extension visa is only for 120 days. Other than that, you've got it all sorted from what was already answered. Great beaches, and although I would also consider Mexican food superior (I love spicy food, and sadly many dominican dishes are a bit bland to me ;)) you can get a hold of basically everything. I would also recommend if anyone else have any more questions or so to visit the site dr1.com/ expat community with a very active forum, where you would be able to get answers to most of your questions concerning DR =D

I would say from Latin American countries, DR is one of the safest countries. There’s a lot of petty crime, but nothing compared with other countries, like human trafficking, violent gangs, kidnapping, those are very rare in DR if they even happen. At most you should be worried about robbery; the risk increases if you are going on foot through an isolated area. The police is not reliable, so everyone has private security, either cameras, a gun, a guardian, alarms, and of course, NEVER leave anything unlocked; lock your car, lock your doors. It has a lot to do with the area too; touristic areas and small towns are very safe; also, meet your neighbors, become part of the community; you will only be a target if you are a complete stranger.

Very safe. As any other place. Just follow common sense. But I did have a incident at the airport, they tried to give me a fake bill. I knew the moment she handed it to me and asked her right away to give me a new one. With out a hassle she knew what she was doing. Just be aware of common scams.

When it comes to Mexico, it really scares me that the drug cartels are everywhere over there. Very scary to watch the news and see what happens down there. Which is the main reason for people trying to cross to the US. There’s definitely crime in DR but never to that extreme. I myself would love to visit Mexico but that’s the only thing that has stopped me from going; I also adore Mexican food.

We visit Mexico every year multiple times a year and have never experience violence of any kind. We've visited various different states and are in love with Mexico. We went last year to Cancun and Yucatan and fell in love with the people and local cultural . I recommend it 100% just be smart don't go out to late by yourself. If you know Spanish try to speak Spanish more than English it goes a long way. Very very very!!! Domincans are very well know for their hair salons and barber shops. Many places also have Asians who give manis like Americans have come accustomed to.

Thank you for your words of encouragement. No matter what I’m facing in my life I won’t let go of Jesus! I keep crying out asking for prayers because, I know our prayers are stronger together so please pray for me. I’m struggling to provide for my two autistic children since losing my job over not getting the vaccine. I have pre existing health condition (Lupus) and Heart disease. I’m on a bunch of medications including blood thinners. My husband passed away three years ago, so I’m all alone. Both of my sons are non verbal so things are more difficult for me. I don’t know how we are going to make it through. This month we are facing homelessness. Every month is a struggle. We have nowhere to go. I’m so embarrassed of my situation. I’ve been put down and mocked over my circumstances. It’s hard to hold my head up, I’m not going to lie. BUT NO MATTER WHAT. I have Faith that God will provide! Faith over Fear! I believe.

It so depends on where in the country. Many have their own septic tanks on their own property. And in some places they just have it run out into a nearby river, which is very gross, but it all depends where in the country.

You can rent cars everywhere here. The local car rental agencies only ask for your passport and how long you need car for. Most times they will keep your passport until you return the car. I come here 5 times a year and noone has EVER asked to see my drivers license.

I don't know why they're lying like that, at certain point, They can't walk in the street with cellphone handy or stop by the side walk and talk in their phone... Just an example. Even in their car with window down, you can get your phone stolen.

@@bernie018 no it's not. Less than $200 if you've stayed less than 1 year. That's why so many don't bother with residency because just to start the process and get the first year of residency it's about $2000, and then about $500 for each year to renew.

It so depends on your situation. My budget is about 2k and I'm not living a "carefree" life, but then I'm living here with my wife and 2 kids, but then we rent a cheap apartment outside of town for only about $250/month+ other costs. So 2k is probably enough if you live alone and don't have any greater needs or have other costly habits.

Don’t bother coming here (DR anywhere) . Scammed, even UBER isn’t good as the drivers tack on 100% and the beaches are trashed badly. Nice beaches in Punta Cana are privatized and not accessible by tourists in many places. I wish these people would be more truthful about this country. Very disappointing and expensive, 28 % tax added on most every service, restaurant, UBER, Airbnb. This place was NOT fun or affordable. Don’t find out the hard way.
