Hi, Trevor and Anna: the reason so many people go to the beach and are so festive on Easter ( Holy Week) is because is the longest holiday of the year, so a lot of people take advantage of that and go to visit family, the beach or rivers. Santo Domingo in comparison is almost empty. Although a lot of people go “partying “ many others go to church. The Church has many activities. And a small proportion stays home in the quiet. The presence of police and military is because sadly Holy Week is a time for a lot of accidents and death. The helicopters are patrolling the coast for posible people in distress and some beaches are close and they check that no one is there. The people in orange are Defensa Civil is a group of members and volunteers ( many of them are lifeguards) that give their time to vigil and give advice to the people and patrol the place looking for possible problematic situations. Hope that helps!

Thanks You Guys you are the best! Thanks for showing so much of my country. Semana Santa is a very important holiday because it's the time of the year when most people have time off. Schools are off the whole week and many companies start on Thursday, so families plan vacation and getaways on those days. Religious activities also are programmed Thursday through Sunday. Good Friday is observed and most places are off and not open, and alcohol is banned. COE is Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia, Emergency Operations Center, includes volunteers from different security organisms and are the ones wearing orange vests. Security authorities like polic and army are displayed all.over to help and protect the population and tourists. I hope you have a good time! Thanks for all you do!!

Yes, people go to the Catholic church during Holy week, especially Friday, Saturday and Sunday to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus. Many go to the beach, especially those that dont practice Catholisism as much.

Decades ago, many decades ago. Churches were packed. No drinking, no music, people wouldn’t even drive. Children couldn’t play or talk loud. Since Jesus was dead evil was released and you must be careful. 😂 just a few grandma practice that now days.

Thanks guys! A few additional facts: 1. The red dots outside of the empanadas indicate what’s inside. Otherwise, when the empanadas are finished, no one would be able to tell them apart. 2. $75 peso ($1.50 UDA) for an empanada is not cheap. You’re paying a higher price for three reasons. First, Empanadas Monumental is one of the top and most prestigious national empanada franchises around. Second, the location, this being a tourist destination. Third, the season in which you’re buying the empanada is considered a high demand season. On average in Santo Domingo empanadas will cost around $35 to $50 pesos. Normally, during Semana Santa, Dominicans flock to the cost lines of the island for the reasons you guys already mentioned, but also because this is their chance to get to see some of their favorite artists for free. This year, those public concerts were not allowed. One of the reasons was the trashing of concert locations of previous years. Thanks guys!
