Hi, Trevor and Anna: the reason so many people go to the beach and are so festive on Easter ( Holy Week) is because is the longest holiday of the year, so a lot of people take advantage of that and go to visit family, the beach or rivers. Santo Domingo in comparison is almost empty. Although a lot of people go “partying “ many others go to church. The Church has many activities. And a small proportion stays home in the quiet. The presence of police and military is because sadly Holy Week is a time for a lot of accidents and death. The helicopters are patrolling the coast for posible people in distress and some beaches are close and they check that no one is there. The people in orange are Defensa Civil is a group of members and volunteers ( many of them are lifeguards) that give their time to vigil and give advice to the people and patrol the place looking for possible problematic situations. Hope that helps!

Thanks You Guys you are the best! Thanks for showing so much of my country. Semana Santa is a very important holiday because it's the time of the year when most people have time off. Schools are off the whole week and many companies start on Thursday, so families plan vacation and getaways on those days. Religious activities also are programmed Thursday through Sunday. Good Friday is observed and most places are off and not open, and alcohol is banned. COE is Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia, Emergency Operations Center, includes volunteers from different security organisms and are the ones wearing orange vests. Security authorities like polic and army are displayed all.over to help and protect the population and tourists. I hope you have a good time! Thanks for all you do!!

Yes, people go to the Catholic church during Holy week, especially Friday, Saturday and Sunday to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus. Many go to the beach, especially those that dont practice Catholisism as much.

Decades ago, many decades ago. Churches were packed. No drinking, no music, people wouldn’t even drive. Children couldn’t play or talk loud. Since Jesus was dead evil was released and you must be careful. 😂 just a few grandma practice that now days.

@@johnnybravo23 Not true at all. Please shut your mouth. The Catholic church increased their membership for almost 2 millions worldwide last year. Even many Protestants pastors became Catholic. Do a better research like I did and dont make up stories out of your mind. Your hate against the Catholic church is obvious.

Not seeing that many people in Cabarete this holiday, has to do with the south of the island being heavily promoted by the government and private sectors. This time I went to pedernales and Barahona and I came across with huge crowds just like it used to be in Terrenas Samaná or Sosúa.

This is a mild! "Semana Santa" weekend. The government threw a bucket of cold water by announcing big gatherings were banned two weeks ago. Usually, there are concerts and parties on all the beaches! Most touristic beaches even have international artists performing. This is the equivalent of Miami Spring Brake Week!

For Samana Santa week is huge in DR, families are off and spending time together. And the military goes out to help the national police during the holy week. The chopper is usually to monitor safety in the beach and can be use in water rescue or Medevac situations.

you guys have to try the traditional Dominican Easter desert " Habichuela con dulse ! sweet beans ! sounds yucky but it is so yummy. i like it cold or room temp. some like it warm. it has 5% raisins , 3%round cookies, 10 % white sweet yams, 80% creamy sweet milky bean & 2 % beans. in "Samana" they add coconut milk and also small dumplings. my favorite! don't miss this *no one else in the world is known for this desert (as far i know).

Thanks guys! A few additional facts: 1. The red dots outside of the empanadas indicate what’s inside. Otherwise, when the empanadas are finished, no one would be able to tell them apart. 2. $75 peso ($1.50 UDA) for an empanada is not cheap. You’re paying a higher price for three reasons. First, Empanadas Monumental is one of the top and most prestigious national empanada franchises around. Second, the location, this being a tourist destination. Third, the season in which you’re buying the empanada is considered a high demand season. On average in Santo Domingo empanadas will cost around $35 to $50 pesos. Normally, during Semana Santa, Dominicans flock to the cost lines of the island for the reasons you guys already mentioned, but also because this is their chance to get to see some of their favorite artists for free. This year, those public concerts were not allowed. One of the reasons was the trashing of concert locations of previous years. Thanks guys!

Random alcohol bans can definitely be a bummer. On my last trip to the Philippines, I went during election season. Well, we learned that they don't serve alcohol anywhere in the country the day before or the day of the elections. Businesses in tourist areas could even apply for an exemption but apparently, no one applied.

40 days prior to Easter is lent. That period they don't party, some fast and their activities are really curbed. With Good Friday, lent is over so they party hard that whole weekend. Have fun.

The big Catholic church Easter weekend day is the Saturday night Easter vigil which culminates midnight. By Easter day it is celebration time. It is probably the major family holiday

Welcome back home, I wish the government will prohibit music and alcohol between Good Friday and Easter Sunday the way it used to be years ago.

It is spring break in the Dominican Republic. A time to enjoy vacation with family and friends. Often a lot of drinking and many people aren't strong swimmers. So that can be a disastrous combination. Enjoy your weekend!

In Cabarete it was seen that everything was quiet, although with a little noise. But it is in Las Terrenas (Samaná) where people lose their minds, because of parties, such as small concerts with excess alcohol.

Tourist are guest and very large contributors to the economy of the Dominican Republic , so it works both ways one hand washes the other we enjoy and u gain in financial gains. Dont get it twisted.

@solojft You can enjoy and yes they gain, but at the end of the day it is their country you chose to hop on a plane to go to THIER BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY- With the country comes the people and their culture! It's the sense of entitlement for me. I read comments of expats and tourists complaining about the noise this or the other. Do not go to DR if you cannot adapt to the culture. Simple. Stay within your own, live and let live!
