I do NOT see arrogance or cockiness AT ALL!!! But what I do see is a very classy, intelligent "confident" woman with an abundance of knowledge about the sport of Gymnastics

It's so refreshing to see an athlete actually answer the questions so thoroughly and thoughtfully. I'm used to seeing interviews with NFL and NBA players who, with the exception of Kobe Bryant and Peyton Manning, never actually answered the questions and instead spit out unrelated cliches. Those were great questions by the interviewer as well.

I love Dawes. She is such a class act. I also agree with her in regards to the Leo's. The gymnasts should be embracing the colors of The United States.

I don't see any arrogance. If you watched her like I did during her reign, she did not get the credit she deserved. All of it went to Miller, Moceanu, Zmeskal who proved they couldn't hold up so well in the Olympics. They were definitely good but during the Olympics things fell apart. Dawes was definitely overshadowed. They even did a snippet on her during one Olympic competition..... Don't remember which one but essentially the commentator reiterated just what I said.
@callmeShmingle10 жыл бұрын
HAHAHAHA. Dawes was without a doubt better than Moceanu (ugh) and Zmeskal but Miller has the consistency and medals that Dawes only wishes she had back in the day. Dawes fell apart at every freaking competition (minus '94 nationals). If anything Miller didn't get the credit she deserved and was overshadowed by Kerri's vault in Atlanta. Dawes was an incredible gymnast that pushed the boundaries of the sport, but let's not make up things that didn't actually happen lol
@Allhoney3310 жыл бұрын
Drew Blumfield I can agree with everything you said. And the Kerri vault was definitely over rated. But I must confess my favorite gymnast from that era was without a doubt Svetlana Boginskaya. I actually emailed her once and she responded.....I couldn't believe it. She's very nice despite being labeled as bitchy.
@venitafredericks53509 жыл бұрын
Drew Blumfield Dawes nailed all 4 of her routines in the team competition in 96.....let's get THAT right and Shannon as usual showed her weakness on floor which was her only mistake but Dawes nailed it all in optionals that years.
@captainbryce18 жыл бұрын
All of you are wrong! A) Dawes WAS overshadowed by Zmeskal, Moceanu, and Miller. But although she was more talented than the others, she was not more consistent. B) Miller WAS a more consistent athlete than Dawes overall, and was the beneficiary of Dawes mistakes at the 93 and 94 world championships (which Dawes should have won, but fell on the last event) C) Dawes DID perform more difficulty than all of the others in her day. However, as she says in the video, back then the difficulty component was capped, and the judged valued artistry more (which Miller was superior at). D) Dawes DID choke in major international competitions, just like Zmeskal did in Barcelona. The difference is that Dawes actually won the 1991 world all-around, and was a 3-time national champion. E) Miller's performance at the 96 Olympics (team or all-around) was nothing to write home about. Dawes was technically the highest all-around scorer for team USA and qualified to 3 of the 4 event finals. F) Miller DID get all the credit she deserved (and more) since she was often given the benefit of the doubt in terms of both mistakes and difficulty. Even in the 94 nationals (which Dawes won) Miller still scored nearly as high. She got a 9.4+ for a fall off the beam! G) Kerri Strug's vault is iconic because she landed it on one foot! Considering that it was one of the more difficult vault's at the time, that she was injured at the time, and that it secured the gold medal, it was hardly "overrated".

We have team gymnastics with three disciplines - vault/trampette, tumbling (like a powertrack) and a floor exercise routine performed to music (but not on a sprung floor). I guess it is a very Scandinavian thing, but it is making its way out in Europe too. There are now official European Champs in Team Gymnastics. And the teams are either men, women or mixed. It is a huge sport in Sweden.

I definitely think that gymnastics needs more artistry back in the sport because I think less young people are interested as spectators. When I was little, I was captivated by the dance and different choreography styles. So even though I couldn't do all the skills when I started, I was able to imitate their dance. Kids, especially teens today, will watch and say "oh that's cool" but there is much less appeal. I'd love to know younger generations had that attraction I did, glued to the screen.

Sometimes, if you are what they consider "humble", you will find yourself perpetually slighted. I think Dawes is just following the credo of "If you don't toot your own horn, no one else will." I think this credo has often been a factor throughout Dawes' career - as there have been times when she didn't get the credit that she deserved. I guess Dawes is just taking matters into her own hands, to some degree. Good for her.

I think that there should be mandatory artistic balletic aspects of MALE AND FEMALE gymnastics equal to 1/2 of the worth of the whole routine. This mandates the ideal balance of grace, coordination, fluidity, beauty...and acrobatic power. I also think that there should be more freedom in the RANGE and STYLE of dance that ALL gymnasts express. Inclusive of hip hop, jazz, etc etc rather than the more conservative balletic mandates in gymnastic apparatus and floor routines.

Rarely to gymnasts have longevity in their sport. Gymnastics is hard on the body where time and old age is'nt your best friend! Gymnast generally perform a their best during the years of 14-16. Now witht he new age requirements, you're going to see far less gymnasts in two olympiads. Dominiqe Dawes was one of the few who competed on the internatinal level from 89-2000". To this day, Dominique Dawes is still a talked about name in the sport of gymnastics!

But it's also correct to consider him "Hispanic". Yes, he is clearly of African descent (what we call "black"). But blacks from Latin-American countries identify themselves more by their nationality than they do their race - they are Cuban, Puerto Rican, or "Hispanic" (etc.) first and foremost. They just think differently than American blacks when it comes to identity. Although - from what I know about Orozco, he might also identify as "black" as well.

@JamesFrew16 жыл бұрын
alwayzAngry she does have humility. But everyone knows she would have been more dominant under the new code in the 90s. She was capable of far more difficulty and not awarded for it. What’s unfortunate is that her honesty seems to be lost on you and you take it as arrogance. How incredibly shortsighted and disrespectful of you.
