It wasn't really his intellect or instinct that kept him alive though. Gus just had to make sure he'd die at the same time as everyone else with power in the cartel, in a foreign country, in a placed ruled by Eladio and full of his goons, where Gus wasn't allowed to have all of his men or equipment along. It was really hard because of these conditions, but Eladio himself wasn't the problem.

He's really not. His emotional intelligence is very high and he's clearly making a move here to back Gus while respectfully neutralize Don Hector without outrighting insulting him. He essentially playfully sends him to bed like a child but avoids a fight and further insult to a large and unpredictable part of his criminal empire. From his perspective, with all the information he has, he is making the right play here. Gus is an up and coming smart business partner and Don Hector's entire family/operation have been an unpredicatable and impulsive nuisance. The key player that actually held them together (Lalo) is presumed dead, which leaves you with a crazy old man and some useless/impulsive muscle as their legacy. They've shown more than once that they let family disputes get in the way of business and are easily emotionally manipulated and delusional. Where as Gus has been very tactical and given no reason for the other members to distrust him at this point. We as the audience know more than Don Eladio at this point so we think it's foolish, but it's not. It's the right play witht he information he has. Don Eladio sending Hector to bed and then making fun of him in front of Gus is a deliberate commitment to Gus, to essentially tell him "I'm backing you" in this dispute. He's not doing it simply to make fun of Hector. I've been in negotiations where millionaires and billionaires act as aloof and playful as Don Eladio in this scene. It's not careless, it's deliberate. Had the suspicions of Gus's involvement come from any other source Don Eladio likely would have taken them more seriously. But because of who the information is coming from he rightfully just thinks it's paranoid delusion from a crazy old man and his psycopathic murdering family.

I uploaded the scene where Gus visits Hector but with Don Eladio's bell sound effects if anyone wants to watch 🤣

This is the breaking bad universe's equivalent to Darth maul shouting "WE'RE ALL GOING TO BURN, WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE"

To be fair Eladio knew Hector was trying to move against him when he was still abled, I'm pretty sure that also affected his decision

Bolsa did a good job trying not to laugh on this scene lol

Don Eladio's place is clearly not wheelchair accessible and i wouldn't be surprised if that were intentional just to mess with Hector some more.

He actually had the accessibility features removed when he heard Hector was wheelchair-bound.

I love his every boss they show is a super dynamic personality, a cacluclating sociopath, a bearucratic oligarch, a ruthless local kingpin. And then it's just Don Eladio, the charmer and eccentric, someone you'd least expect to be on the top. If he's hiding some secret genius he's doing much better at it. Sometimes it really is just having social skills that makes the difference.

One of the most hilarious and memorable parts of the show, is this imitation by Don Eladio. Tears of laughter

Wow, so nice of Don Hector to ding the words, "my pleasure" and "You are da boss!" and "I am very thankful for your gift and request." Shows how much they respect eachother!

Whats funny is that literally everyone at this meeting ends up dead at eachothers hands because all of them hated eachother.

Прикольно, что они оба снимались в лице со шрамом =)

Don eladio never had the makings of a varsity "ding ding ding ding" impersonator.

How the other two actors could keep a straight face while Eladio did the impression. Wow
