I remember that game...it was so fun growing up in the 70's and 80's being a Dolphins fan...you knew that with Shula you would always have a chance to win every game.

Don Shula had many fights with the Ref about the rules. I remember one game where he was arguing about a rule to the ref and ref told him he was wrong, one problem, Shula was one of the people that wrote the rule. He was on the Rule Committee for decades.

Way back in the day when QBs were supposed to call their own plays, there was actually a penalty for "coaching from the sidelines" and it was called on Shula (this is why teams used to shuttle players to get the plays on the field). Shula told the ref, goes to show what you know, that is a ten yard penalty and you only moved it 5. The ref said, the way you coach, 5 is enough. Shula was mad in the moment but later thought it was hilarious.

Man, what poor announcing from the booth. Never once did they explain the reason the penalty mattered and when the flag was thrown. If it happens before Orosz punts the ball then it is a then it is a defensive foul and Dolphins maintain possession. Once kicked, technicality the possession of the ball belongs to the Eagles so any holding after that still gets called but the penalty is marked from the spot where the tackle of the punt returner was made. Still, I loved how refs looked like refs back then with their socks and white pants. I did not remember the refs having their whole job wording on their unis....I always see BJ, FJ, U, R etc. I hate the black pants they use now. Red Cashion, Gene Tunney, Jerry Markbreight we’re always a pleasure to watch work a game...

I remember this game well, dubbed The Loud Bowl. Jaworski kept saying later he couldn't hear the signals. Shula was fined by the league for the choke reference.

Don Shula should write the book as to how to have a perfect season with a back up quarterback. Well he did it.
@ag3585 жыл бұрын
@@raymondnavarro9798 it wasn't the whole season, earl morrall replaced bob griese in week 5 , won the rest of regular season games and 1 playoff game but was having trouble with the Steelers so bob, finally healthy, came off the bench to defeat the Steelers and started superbowl, won finishing undefeated. Earl was no ordinary back up qb , he backed up Johnny u in Baltimore and came off the bench in second quarter to win super bowl v for the colts. 2 time pro bowl over 20000 yards passing in career . He played for shula in Baltimore, shula always understood the importance of a quality back up. But with salary cap theses days its hard to have a great qb like morrall as a back up. I'm not taking away his accomplishments that year but i believe the Steelers win if shula doesn't bring griese in.

Don Shula was a football genius and was ahead of his time. You should do a video of the onside punt after safety that he pulled off against Cincinnati, It had never been done before. Shula headed to the referee huddle and whipped out his NFL rule book and showed them that it was legal.
