ELO had their biggest hits in the 70's-80's & mixed modern rock pop songs with classical overtones. Jeff Lynne wrote most of their songs. They had a lot of great hits such as "Roll Over Beethoven", "Showdown", "Can't Get It Out Of My Head", "Evil Woman", "Strange Magic", "Livin' Thing", "Telephone Line", "Rockaria!", "Do Ya", "Turn to Stone", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Mr. Blue Sky", "Wild West Hero", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Shine A Little Love", "Last Train To London", "Confusion", "Hold On Tight", "Twilight", "The Way Life's Meant To Be", "Here Is The News", "Ticket To The Moon" etc.

A common mondegreen in the song is the perception that, following the title line, Lynne shouts "Bruce!" In the liner notes of the ELO compilation Flashback and elsewhere, Lynne has explained that he is singing a made-up word, "Grooss", which some have suggested sounds like the German expression "Gruß," meaning "greeting."[7] Lynne has explained that originally he did not realize the meaning of the syllable, and he just used it as a temporary placekeeper to fill a gap in the lyrics, but upon learning the German meaning he decided to leave it in.[7] After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows.[8][9][7] ELO engineer Mack remembers the genesis of the term differently, stating that Lynne was actually singing "Bruce" as a joke in advance of an Australian tour "referring to how many Australian guys are called Bruce."[7]

Grew up on ELO, always loved them remember getting shit on the school bus for liking ELO, weird thing was I loved all the music the cool kids thought was cool also, always thought it was Bruce as well until Professor of rock educated me, lol.. I always related Bruce to being that cat that thought he was the coolest that was bringing everyone else down cause they weren’t as cool as him or he was stealing your girl, still one of my fav ELO songs.
@GinMae2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for this, Barrie! I always heard it as "Bruce" -- and wondered who that guy was... (but kind of assumed it was a mondegreen - I term I learned a few years back, and LOVE that you use it here) -- anyway - it's particularly funny to me right now, b/c I've had this friend "Bruce" for over ten years, and we share a lot of musical history/tastes - even unusual ones from the late 70's "new wave" era - anyway, a few years ago, I was surprised when Bruce told me he just "never liked ELO" - of course, I'm sure it had nothing to do with this little line... BUT - a few months ago, my youngest sister was desperate for a place, and my good friend offered to let her rent a room from him -- which seemed to be working fine for a few months -- then, "out of the blue" - he said he'd rather she found another place as soon as possible (that worked GREAT... so no need for a long story) -- but when she told me, she was kind of blind-sided, so one of the first things I thought about was this: "Don't bring me down.. Bruce!" -- lol -- sorry for the long, lame story, but I totally appreciate your comment, and hope to hear more... all the best!

ELO was one of the bands we used to play when my unit was attached to protection duties in refugee camps when I was in the British Royal Marine Commandos. We found their music was always a amazing way to reach the refugees, especially the children, by dancing badly along to the songs. The children were always the first to show us how to dance along properly, we leant that after listening the Queen's performance during Live Aid in 1985 whilst my company was in Ethiopia.

When I was growing up, this song was a staple in roller skating rinks everywhere. The sound of this song playing while people bang their skates on the wood in rhythm was pretty wild back in the day. ELO has been considered the musical heirs of the Beatles. If you listen to "A day in the life" and then follow it with ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky" it slaps you in the face pretty readily. Lynn produced the Beatles at one point after Breaking from ELO for a while. He has reconstituted the band and gone back out on tour with the old titles in the last decade or so and still kickin it.

Now for another high-energy song you need to take 'The Last Train To London'. 🚉 (If it's a lyric video by the same person, they'll probably write 'LOST Train To London'. 'Bruce' indeed.) Just listening to your comments at the end, watch ELO in one of their Wembley concerts from 2017. Not the same line up (save for Jeff Lynne) but you get to see the whole 'orchestra'.

The phrase "Bruce" used in the chorus is actually "Vroose" - a sound-word made up by one of the band that was sung in practice and Jeff Lynne thought it so good he added in. It doesn't mean anything in particular, but most people think its "Bruce" for some reason.
